I like God's Been Good a lot. I do think some of the songs on it are more progressive than some songs on their other projects, but I don't think it's contemporary. There are those like God Will Go, Hello After Goodbye, What Faith Does, and Take It To The Cross that have a progressive feel to them. But I also think the slower songs need that powerful track behind it to give it a "kick". On the other hand, The Moment I Get Up There, Roll On, (and I would say) Goin' Home Day remind me of the traditional style. Plus, all the songs on God's Been Good have wonderful messages to them. I see L5 getting a little progressive since Roger passed away - but I wouldn't say it is because of Rogers passing, I just think that SGM is running short on solid quartet songs. . .Making it harder for the groups to remain 100% traditional. Maybe if L5 released one CD to last two years instead of one CD a year maybe they would have time to find those good traditional songs? Yet, I know as a fan I don't like waiting two years to get a new CD from my favorite groups. (No way to win, huh?) Anyone have some thoughts on that one?

This is the diliema that SG artists face, if they don't 'mix it up' their recordings are called 'dull, nothing new, repetitive, etc'. If they do all progressive, they have left their roots, if they mix it up - the mix is never right for everyone. So no matter what they do, it's hard to win!

That being said I have very few CDs that I like all the cuts on or at least like as much as I do others.

Great point...You can't make everyone happy.

Yes.

I think the artists that do the best are the artists who do three things:

(1) They know what style of music they want to sing.
(2) They find an audience that likes that style.
(3) They stay within that style, and keep getting better and better at doing it.

Call it the Greater Vision path to Success.

I think I would put "Take It To The Cross" in the country category, but just because of the choice of vowel sounds.
I for one like the progressive. I like the traditional. We can have both.
As a L5 fan, I don't want them to go to a two year rotation on their CDs...that's just too long for me. If it was up to me, I wouldn't change anything, well, maybe some things, but that's not something I want to get into here. OK...maybe one...I think L5 should break from Daywind. Yes I know, that besides the Gaither machine, Daywind is arguably top dog...but I just haven't seen any benefits for L5 being with them. They don't promote L5 (who is one Daywind's top groups) nearly as much as others. The Daywind website doesn't even have "God's Been Good" (a Daywind project) listed yet. I don't know...I'm just not seeing the love from Daywind.

Don't rate what Daywind does on their website alone. Their website goes months and months without any major updates. Their main page banner features Greater Vision's project that released 11 months ago, for goodness' sake!

Daywind does do a decent amount of promotion for Legacy Five, including a full-page color ad in Singing News for most of L5's new releases. That's one or two thousand dollars of promotion right there. They also get the group's songs to radio; some chart better than others, but that's just life in radio. I even see L5's CDs in my Christian bookstore, and on all major (and most minor) online SG retailers and download sites.

Yes, their website is way behind, but I think they do a decent job in other departments.

You make some very fine points, a few of those I have never considered. But if I was new to SG and I wanted to do some research, Daywind's web site would not give me a full picture of what's out there. As an outsider looking in, the web is the first place I would look. Most people don't get the SN like I do. I just think DW could do better.

I have a question...who makes the decisions about what single is released to radio? I have always wondered that.

I think they consider a few things, such as

1) Length of the song
2) "Speed" of the song (fast ones do better)
not sure what else.

I don't know if this has anything to do with what you guys are talking about with Daywind but I know where I live there are three GOOD size Christian book stores and the only L5 CD that I saw in them for the longest time was Live in Music City. Just about three weeks ago they finally got Know So Salvation on the shelf! I don't know if Daywind is responsible for this, or even if it is a big deal. But my point is this - that's not very many L5 Cd's in the bookstore when you consider on the same shelf is five or six Kingsmen and Gold City Cd's. Good news is the last time I was in there they did have God's Been Good on the shelf too. But that's not a very good ratio! Like I said, I don't know if this is a big deal or if it is something Daywind does or not, but it certainly doesn't make L5 look very good. (By the way they don't sell Live in Music City anymore.) What do you guys think?

Also, the big charting SGM radio station where I live doesn't play L5 much. The only time I hear Hello After Goodbye is on the Gospel Greats. The local count down doesn't have them on the local chart either. I don't want to point fingers at Daywind - L5 could have a radio promoter and we wouldn't know it. I could live in a bad area for L5. I just don't know. But you guys might find this interesting.

Ok, like I said, it could just be me. Yes, DeeAnn, you are right! I do remember that L5 does mix it up and has on most all their recordings, it's jsut this one seemed a little more contemporary to me. I haven't listened to it enough yet; I will give it another listen this week sometime and give my thoughts on some of the songs. My faves thus far are "Hello After Goodbye," "God's Been Good," and "Going Home Day."

Lynn, alot of what the Bible Bookstores have is based on what they order or what the customers request: this is what I was told at my local dealer. They only have one little section on one side dedicated to SG, and there isn't much there. But I, too, live in a place not big on SG.

Tina, you are going to notice a difference since Roger is no longer around to produce. Everyone has a different style. The latest stuff has been a little different, but I love it. Some CDs just have something that makes you listen to it to no end, while others collect more dust. They all can't be winners. L5 has certainly chosen some great stuff without Roger's writing...just something we have to get used to...

RogerBennett_Fan, Christian bookstores might stock multiple titles by the top-selling CCM mega-artists. But pretty much everyone else is doing good if they just get their recent CD in. (And remember that if someone else purchases the one or two copies sitting on shelf, then the shelf is empty until / if they re-order!)

I agree. Their website gets way out of date. They probably have a thousand and one other things on their mind, though.

Ultimately, it's often the record company, though the radio promoter and the group can put input into the decision.

Does anybody know if the guys will still have the Summer $40 deal on their four new items at NQC?

I remembered seeing this several days ago and not sure if anyone has posted about this from the recent newsletter. But here is the info received just a while ago in L5 newsletter:

The deadline for the 2008 Summer Special is September 1st, so you just have a few more weeks to get it!

Thanks Tina and Daniel for the thoughts on the bookstores. It's nice to see what you all have to say.

One thing Daniel - I wasn't referring to the CCM artist, I was only comparing the SG artists. The bookstores I had in mind actually have a very large SGM section of CD's and DVD's. So just among the SG artists - Some groups like Gold City, Greater Vision, Mark Bishop, Cathedrals . . .have five or six CD's on the shelf, a mix of old and new. But others like L5 only have one or two.

Although, it makes sense what Tina said about the ordering and requesting.

Thanks again guys.

Since we're on the subject of Cd's, what do you all think L5's best Cd is? I think Monuments is the best so far, but that's just me.

Monuments is BY FAR the best one that I've heard! My second favorite is London.

My favorite is London. Live in Music City is second.

I would love Monuments if it had a different (and better) song order.

A hard question to answer.....I love them all. Monuments is probably on top, along with London, Heroes of the Faith (especially cause of He's been there). I love the Heritage series.

What songs from previous CDs do you wish L5 would put back into their program?

I wish they would do God's Love from their first Cd, Strong in the Strength. I am glad they redid I Stand Redeemed! (even though I have yet to hear it again live) also glad they did Rocking on the Waves in July. This was a request by a little girl, so probably just a one time deal.

Well, the two I most wish they'd bring back - "Joy" and "Home Free" - just wouldn't be the same without Roger, so it's probably best if / that they don't do them much.

Well, I know what you both mean, but that isn't keeping Roger's songs alive either.

Pick some songs other than featured by Roger. "Freedom" is another one I miss...
