Wow, so Maggie would be there already, or not soon. Exciting, exciting!

I'm no good at things like Trivial Pursuits.

I'm not laughing . . no way! If the sun is out, I may be able to figure out which direction, but I wouldnt' count on it. I could write a book about my escapades in St. Louis. That's really just in the last 10 years or so cuz I didn't drive down there before that . . occasionally to the shopping malls -- the ones I knew exactly how to get to. I have to say tho, many times my getting lost has been due to something like the road changing names -- something ppl who live there or drive there a lot might know, but of which I'm unaware of. I mean, when you're looking for Hanley Road and all you can find is Laclede Station -- sheesh! How am I supposed to know they are one & the same!

Anyway, I am currently talking to Maggin online . . she is near Omaha and has stopped for a break. She will likely be getting here early afternoon tomorrow. Her first 4½ hours were rough this morning . . . seems the windchill in Winnipeg was -54F and so cold her car heater wouldn't work . . . if finally did, but her hands were about frozen. In spite of that, she's made good time. She plans to drive another 3 hours tonight, then stop for the night and come in tomorrow. She says to tell everyone hi and send hugs :D

Good afternoon everyone . . may not have time to post for the next few days, so thought I'd better say hi while I can. I'm waiting on Maggie now, who should be arriving just any time. I didn't get everything done that I would have liked to finish, but I'm sure I got enough -- probably more than was needed, really. I would like to make some more turtles, but I may just let her help me wiht them tomorrow . . . also, I was going to go shopping, but couldn't force myselt out the door this morning and finally decided I'd make beans tonight instead of stew, then go to the store later this evening or tomorrow. nothing pressing really, except I need some fresh fruit & veggies.

Garrett was home sick today -- not terribly sick, just a low grade fever and kind of puny acting. Now he's pestering me to show him something on teh puter, so guess I'll have to cut this short

Ginny, we're still counting on you for tomorrow . . let me know if there are any changes!

Hi Leah! I guess Maggie has arrived by now. She'd posted on her thread about some of her trip. I sure hope she gets some rest and gets her nerves settled down from some of the traveling ordeals she encountered. Shesh! The woman must have nerves of steel when it comes to driving on slick roads! I wouldn't attempt driving on a slick road, if someone offered to pay me!!!

Sorry to hear that little Garrett is not feeling well. I'll keep him in my prayers.

Hope you gals have a wonderful time visiting together. I can imagine all the chit-chat going on even now! I'm so tickled for you both!!! If one of you get the chance, try to let us know what you're up to in a day or so. Until then...EAT, PLAY, SHOP, SLEEP, LAUGH, TALK AND PRAY! Not necessarily in that order maybe...but you get the idea....HAVE FUN!

She made it safe & sound, Trish

Hi Zondie & Mike!

Zondie, we have covered several of those suggestions already tonight, and I'm sure we'll manage to make all of them before the week is up . . . for tonight, tho, we are both tuckered out and decided to give it up & go to bed. Ginny is coming tomorrow from a nearby town to join us for lunch. Then I guess we'll get to try making our way thru that repertoire all over again

Howdy Mike & Trish!

So good to hear that Maggie made it safely and "The Good Times" are getting under way! Ginny, the pressure is on Sweetie. You have to prove to those ladies that you can keep up with the best of 'em. Have fun girls!

Yep, we DID have a bunch of fun! Today was so delightful!! Ginny got here about 10:30 or 11:00, we talked & talked & talked . . ate all kinds of goodies that Maggie had brought from Canada, sampled Ginny's delicious bundt cake she brought, still warm from the oven . . . before we knew it, it was 12:30 -- past time to put lunch in the oven. I'd saved a special frozen lasagna from a specialty company just for this occasion, so I got it out of the freezer, turned the oven on, then read the directions . . . it said 2 hours!! not the usual 1 hour baking time I'd expected . . . not only that, it was snowing and cold out, so . . hmmmmm . . . well, small town we may be, but we still have a pizza hut that delivers, so . . . . just a simple matter of dialng the phone . . . before you know it, we're all stuffing ourselves on pizza & bread sticks, and talking & talking & talking.

It was pretty late afternoon when we finally got around to playing a game (Rummikub), then we immediately got interrupted with company, but they just sat down & visited a few minutes, & after they left we continued with our game. In spite of Ginny & Maggie both teasing me about being more familiar with the game, Ginny won the first one . . (I did win the 2nd, tho ) . . . by that time it was supper time and Ginny had to go home. Maggie & I fixed supper (leftovers), cleaned the kitchen then lounged in front of the TV for a couple of hours before giving in to call of the bed (well, she has and I'm on my way )

Tomorrow we may take a trip to Hermann, Missouri . . that's if the roads are not bad and no ice or snow predicted. It did snow nearly an inch today, and has made things rather pretty.

Anyway, I'm off to bed . . .

A fun day had by all.

John and I just finished playing Rummikub. Of course he thrashed me in all 3 games.

Awwwww Trish! . . . you just need to find the online version and practice up! . . . I found one called Cub Rummy that you play against the computer.

Ginny's coming back down today to join us for our trip to Hermann . . . the sun is shining, and it's already 22F, so it should be a good day to so sight-seeing and shopping.

Girls, I've never heard of (not to mention, played) a game called, 'Rummikub'. But I intend to find out about it. If it's anything like Rummy then I'm probably already hooked! Sounds like you gals are eating good and having a knee-slappin' good time! Hope the shopping/sight-seeing goes well.

Rummikub uses tiles instead of cards. I love it but John cringes now when I ask him to play it. I went through a time that I played it every chance that I got, and he got sick of it.

I figured I better get in here & post early cuz I won't have much opportunity for posting this week. Maggie & I will be doing a bit of visiting -- not just among ourselves, but with others also.

We've had such a wonderful time already! Saturday Ginny joined us for our trip to Hermann . . . My what a great time we had! Ok, I've started to describe this, but decided THIS WEBSITE could do it much better! . . . it really is a beautiful town even in the cold, gray light of a wintery day, but we were blessed with sun for most of that day, so we it was a great day to be shopping & sight-seeing. It is a town, however, that cannot be covered in one short day; we only managed to visit 2-3 shops, one sandwich shop and one winery. We drove around for a bit tho, with Maggie jumping out taking photos of the historic buildings and interesting architecture. I told her she really needs to come back in May or October for their Maifest or Oktoberfest.

It was so much fun being together, tho . . . we were so happy Ginny could go with us -- she even bought our lunch! It's an hours drive from here, so we had lots of time to visit on the way there & back -- now they would tell you that I did most of the talking, but -- well, you know how some ppl LOVE to exaggerate . . . . Anyway, we were tired when we left, but we all felt we could have used at least one more day there. Bill had volunteered to fix us supper, so we called him when we started home, and he had t-bone steaks, baked potatoes, chilled asparagus and buttered corn ready for us shortly after we walked in the door. Maggie bought a loaf of french bread in Hermann, AND she'd brought me some Creamed Clover Honey all the way from Canada, so we had a delicious meal, topped with the honey & bread! How great is that!?! Ginny got to stay for supper, but had to leave shortly after. It was great of her husband to let her join us for two glorious days! (maybe we'll even kidnap her again before Maggie has to leave )

We enjoyed church together yesterday morning, then Maggie took Bill & I out for lunch. We didn't get back here, however, until nearly 4:00 . . . silly me to let the grocery shopping AND Walmart go until yesterday, but that's what I did . . Bad Linda! We both had dress shoes on so we paid for that . . . we spent the remainder of the afternoon lounging around here, Maggie answering some emails, and I napping on the chaise lounge -- her & Bill both tried to tell me I was snoring, but I told them they didnt' know what they were talking about . . .

We chose not to go back to church last night, and instead Maggie introduced me to her games she'd brought . . they were VERY interesting, and I look forward to playing more of them today even tho she is beating my socks off . . . one is a Bible game, and the other is a geography/history game. I'm no good at history/geography, but I did like learning new facts (which is not to say I would remember any of them this morning ) . . . the Bible game I actually came close to beating her, but she took a pretty good handicap, so

On a more serious note, I''m thinking I've not posted about this, but my brother's wife has a brain aneurysm . . . they discovered it about 2 weeks ago, but during the same period of time also discovered she has some blockage in the arteries in her heart. Last week they did both a brain cath and a heart cath. They found a second aneurysm in the brain, one deep in the brain that has calcified and one at the top of her brain close to her skull. The latter one will not be difficult to take care of, but they are quite concerned about the other. There was a team of 6 neurologists and 6 cardiologists working on the problems. The neurologists will have to map out a way to get to the inner brain aneurysm and then take care of them both, then the cardiologist will to a stint.

My brother, as well as the rest of the family are understandably quite upset -- and scared. Wanda just celebrated her 70 birthday last November. As you all know, I've lost a brother and a brother-in-law in this past 6 months, and I'm really not ready to lose another. You know, in all the years I've congratulated myself on being one of the younger members of my family, I never once considered that there was a good chance I would also be watching them leave this world. It's a very difficult thing to go thru, as some of you know. Please pray that God will have His hand on Wanda and her family, as well as the extended family. She seems very at peace and unafraid with this, but she admits that her family is not. We have plans to go to see her today or tomorrow.

Garrett is not here yet -- guess I need to call and see if he's coming.

Hermann looks beautiful, Leah! Thanks for posting the website. I'd say it is breath-taking to actually be there to view those beautiful sights! I'm glad the three of you got to spend that time together. And what a gem of a husband you have there! Sounded like a delicious meal he had waiting on you gals! (Don't forget to reward him for such thoughtful behavior... ).

Sounds as though you are showing Maggie a real good time of vacationing. I'm sure she's enjoying herself tremendously. Are you ever planning on going to Canada to visit with her? She could, no doubt, show you some beautiful sights too!

So sorry to hear about your sil. I will be praying about her situation. I'm sure it has all the family stressed. Does the aneurysm's cause her to suffer real bad pain? You mentioned about going to visit her, will Maggie be going with you?

Hi Trish & Zondie -- and thank you both! We are having some wonderful times, for sure. And yes, Zondie, Hermann is really beautiful. I'd love to show it to both of them in the spring and fall. And yes, I DO have a gem of a husband, and try to reward him every chance I get. It was wonderful for all of us to be able to spend the time together, and I'm especially glad Ginny got to join us for some fun and relaxation . . . she's really tied down a lot with her husband now, and I am sure this was a blessed time for her.

My sister-in-law was in a lot of pain -- headaches. That's what sent her to the hospital, but she is no longer. Right now she just is weak, so is trying to rest in bed as much as possible. If I go visit while Maggie is here, she will go with me, but I think I may wait until she leaves, tho Bob & Wanda would be very welcoming and very happy to meet her, so we'll see.

Today, I just decided I was too tired to go running around again, so we spent the day at home relaxing & visiting. She's gone to bed early tonight to try to catch up on her sleep a bit -- I think the weekend rather wore us both out a bit.

OOOPS!!! I said I would do this, then just zoned out before I got here

Ok, here it is:

1 12oz bag of Kraft caramels
1/4 C canned evaporated milk (like Milnot)
2 C pecan halves

Melt together in a 2-3 quart double boiler or pan with a heavy bottom, stirring constantly. Once melted completely, add pecans, stir and drop by teaspoon unto GREASED WAX PAPER (very important!). Let set in a cool room until very firm.

Melt together in a double boiler:
1 12 oz pkg of chocolate chips
1/2 stick of paraffin

Dip carmel pecan pieces in chocolate, then drop unto a CLEAN SHEET of GREASED WAX PAPER.

Tips:
Always used greased wax paper -- and oil didn't work for greasing very well -- a non-stick kitchen spray is the best. I've tried many other ways, and the caramel will always stick to anything else.
Don't refrigerate after dipping in chocolate . . apparently the moisture condenses and causes them to turn dull, grainy looking. Just keep in a cool room.
A cool/cold day is much better for making these than a warm day.
This recipe is supposed to make 50 but I'm finding it much better to make smaller ones -- just about 3 pecan halves -- and more of them -- 70-80 pieces.

These are wonderfully smooth, rich, and have always made a hit wherever I've taken them! A little time consuming because of the two stages, as well as unwrapping the caramels, but well worth the effort . . . Enjoy!

(edited to change canned cream to canned evaporated milk)

They sound very interesting, but I don't think we have the ingredients over here. Oh well.

I'm glad you're getting some rest in there too. Makes time for more chatting and games if you feel up to it.

THANK YOU, Leah! I've got to try these before to long since they're my ds favorite. Can't you also use pecan pieces instead of halves?

Yes, Zondie, you can use pieces instead of halves -- hey, then they would require less chewing -- less chewing means you could eat more in less time with lest expenditure of energy! There ya go!!

We've had another great day! First with Garrett . . . have I mentioned I love that little fellow?? He was quite entertaining this morning . . . then we went to my husband's sisters house, who lives about 4 miles from me. We took her some of the turtles -- finished them just before leaving. We visited with her about an hour before we went to the bookstore in Cuba. Maggie was hoping to get her book in there, but their new book section was even smaller than I'd realized. We did have a good lunch there, tho, then came home just in time to get Garrett off of the bus. I guess tomorrow night we may have him for the evening, in which case we will likely take him to church.

I fixed us grilled cheese and soup for supper, then Maggie & I cleaned the kitchen and played some games. She beat me in both the Bible game and the geography game, but I'm doing better in both than I'd expected to, so I don't feel so badly . . I did, however, manage to beat her in Rummikub . . . . now she's gone to bed and I'm headed that way shortly. We will go to St. James Missouri tomorrow -- possibly Ginny can join us again. There are many small gift shops there that I thought Maggie would find interesting.
