Hi, Ginny & Trish! Actually, Ginny, I have a really long story typed about Friday I guess I'll go retrieve and post in here. This bathroom renovation has been . . ummmmm . . . . interesting . . . ok -- here goes . . .

FRIDAY"S FIASCO

I started the day rather laid back & lazy. It was the first day I’d not had Garrett in maybe 4 weeks, and it felt so good not having to get up & dressed early to greet him. I’d not slept well, so by the time Bill left, I was curled up back in our bed for an early morning nap. I didn’t nap long . . never do, but the 20-30 minutes extra was enough to revive me a bit. I played on the computer, ate my breakfast, drank my coffee & chatted on the phone with Judi.

Bryan (the contractor) called to say he’d be late cuz he needed to get some tires replaced -- by the time he was ready to leave my house on Thursday he had two flat tires on his truck -- poor guy! He got here around 10:30, and started right away preparing the tile to cut for the shower walls. I walked outside to watch him work -- and panicked! They were not the right tiles!!! I’d tried to be so careful picking out the tile, and was sure I’d taken it all off the same stack at Lowe’s, but in spite of that, I had only one box of biscuit matte finish tile . . the other four were a mixture of white matte and biscuit bright. Shopping at Lowe’s this last two weeks has been a real lesson in patience, and I don’t think I made good grades . . . . . Bryan loaded the boxes into the back of my van, and off I went, using my cell phone to call the Lowe's 20 miles west of us as I left the driveway to make sure they had the correct tile in stock. Five miles down the road, I finally get someone on the phone, and after doing a search of the shelves, all she can come up with is 45 tiles . . I need 320 . . . I turned around and headed to the store 20 miles east. Then she tells me she's checking inventory on that store . . they have 180 tiles; however, there IS a store that had the amount we needed -- 50 miles west . . After a short discussion with Bryan, it’s determined I have no choice but to drive there.

By this time, I’m back in Cuba, so made a pit stop at McD’s to get some coffee & lunch. Good grief! I do believe half of St Louis had headed our way for the weekend, and most were in McD’s!! Finally, I get out of there with my sandwich, but had to go back for the coffee as they’d neglected to give it to me.

It takes an hour to get to this Lowes. I call ahead to make sure they have it, and they do .. asked the girl to take it to the front of the store & leave it at the return counter so I wouldn’t have to traipse all over an unfamiliar store searching, and she very graciously agreed to do that. I got there and made the transaction fine, tho it took some special maneuvering of the computer since I’d gotten a discount on the first purchase, and of course wanted that same discount. We finally got it all figured out and settled, and I said I needed to use the restroom before returning home, could I leave the cart there while I did so? Of course. I parked it out of her way, and took off back thru the maze to get to the restroom.

Back to the return desk to pick up my order, the clerk now has 2 customers, but my cart is right near where I left it, so I motion/mouth to her that I’m taking my cart, she nods, I squeeze between the 2 customers to pull the cart out from it’s parking space, and off to the car I go.

I have to stop in Rolla to pay the cabinet maker for the cabinets, the last of which was delivered while I was on these errands. He & his wife are both friendly & talkative, so it takes me a bit to get away from there. I check with Bryan and he’s not really run out of things to do, so I decided to go by Dairy Queen for a chocolate-dipped chocolate ice cream cone I’d been craving for days. I enjoyed a few minutes of relaxation as I ate that on the 25 minute drive back to Cuba.

Bryan had trimmed out the window with the tile, and then put up the border trim below the window as we’d discussed – it was beautiful!! Suddenly, all the aggravation and running around was worth it! The overhead cabinets which had been delivered were installed, and they too looked beautiful. After inspecting the progress on the bathroom, I came to the computer to relax a bit, but found myself a bit restless after all the craziness of the morning, so wandered back to the bathroom to chat with Bryan. He was spreading tile cement on the walls, then turning, he opens a box of tile, takes out a piece and applies it to the wall . . . whoa! What’s going on here?? The colors don’t match! “No!! This can’t be!! Three of us at the store checked each box – they ALL said biscuit matte finish!” Bryan & I look at the box .. White matte finish. Dismayed, we go outside to check the other boxes . . . sigh . .. I’d brought home the same boxes I’d taken up there to return. How could this be?? I wanted to cry . . or scream . . or just throw up my hands & quit. But I knew I could do none of those

I went over the cart scenario in my mind again, remembering the cart being a little displaced from where I put it, but also remembering that there didn't seem to be another cart of tile sitting nearby it when I returned to pick it up after using the bathroom. Besides, why would the clerk move my cart to anywhere near the other one?? Bryan says call the store. So, I did . . . gave the manager a brief run-down of my week and the four trips I’d made to Lowe’s, the mistakes that were made, and now this latest error. I asked if there was any way they could deliver those boxes, and they said yes, they would do so, tho it wouldn’t be until tomorrow. Tomorrow is fine. It was now mid-afternoon, and it wasn’t likely Bryan would get much more done on the walls at this late hour. A few minutes later, the manager called back to say he had a guy coming towards Cuba tonight and he’d offered to deliver them to us. Wonderful!!

Bryan said he'd finish some trim in the bathroom and put up the medicine cabinet mirror I'd been working on if I was finished painting it. Well sort of . . I’d painted it first silver, then gold, then a mixture of gold & silver. I’d been trying to achieve a brushed nickel, but that wasn’t happening. I retrieve the mirrored cabinet out back and take it to him. I wasn’t too far away when I hear Bryan groaning . . . I did not want to hear that sound! Hesitantly, I step back into the bathroom where he is holding the cabinet in the recessed hole in the wall. Then he reaches over to swing the door open. It won’t open. In bumps against the beautiful new faucets I’d picked out . . I experience a moment of déjà vu as I remember the last faucet fiasco . . . I’d purchased new faucets that had a high arch for the spout, and was so happy to have something with a touch of elegance in there. Bill started installing them, but before he had them set he tried to open the medicine cabinet for something . . . . . . Well, back then I didn’t have the option of moving the medicine cabinet up a few inches. This time I did. Bryan will ‘move the hole’ up 3 inches, patching the space left beneath, and I’ve no doubt that he will make it look good.

So, now we have the correct tiles. Bryan said he’d return tomorrow or Monday, in spite of the holiday. I really appreciate that, but told him he didn't need to feel obligated to do that. He's not made it over, so I guess he either decided to finish another job he'd started, or got busy with some holiday celebrations. I expect I'll see him back here tomorrow. Hopefully, things will go a little smoother from here on out.

Wow! You've had a real time of things, haven't you?

I'm glad you got the right tiles delivered to you. What a mess about those. At least you managed to get that all sorted out for you though.

Oops, just saw your post, Trish

Well, I don't have a story, but I dfid want to say that we've had some relaxing, and good times this weekend, in spite of the bathroom mess. And I did get that cleaned up today, BTW. I mean, I can't totally clean the shower/tub area because it's not fiinished, but I did manage to get all the organizing done under the counter, and it turned out very nice. I'll still need a cabinet in there of sorts -- I had a small one before, but would like something a bit bigger than that, and when I get that in I think I will have plenty of storage, and be able to keep things nicely put away.

Anyway, about the weekend. Sunday was our 40th anniversary, and it was bad planning on my part I guess, but this whole bathroom remodel was simply going to keep us from planning anything special for that. We talked it over and decided we'd go away another weekend to celebrate, when we could both enjoy it more.

We were both very tired Saturday, so simply went to eat, then by Walmart to get the storage containers for organizing under the counter stuff. I found just what I wanted at a very low price, so was able to get plenty of them.

Sunday, we were invited over to Judi & Jim's to join their family for a 'hot dog roast'. That turned out to be grilled hot dogs, cuzt it rained most of the day, but we had a great time, a great meal, and they taught me how to play Texas Hold'em afterwards! . . . I would never have believed I'd learn to play a poker game at Judi's house, but it was all clean good fun . . played with toothpicks, so quite legit . . .

As we were leaving there, my sister Cathy called, and said why didn't we get together to celebrate our anniversaries -- her 7th today, our 40th yesterday, so they came over today at noon. I fixed a simple meal -- enchilada casserole, and we had a great time eating, visiting and playing cards.

It was a simple weekend, but a very nice one, and we both feel so much more rested than if we'd gone away.

Well happy belated 40th wedding anniversary to you and Bill. At a time when 1 in 3 marriages don't make it, it's good to see the marriages that do.

Yesterday, the weather anchor on one of our TV channels congratulated a couple who celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. That's the longest I've heard of. Good on them!

Thanks, Trish. It's not always been smooth sailing, but I can honestly say I am very thankful we've both held in there.

We finished the bathroom today . . . what a job that turned out to be! But it's done, and it looks beautiful! Much better than I'd hoped for. I can't wait to get everything back in order. I'm so glad I got as much organizing done as I did this weekend, cuz now I can concentrate on the mess left in the sewing room. I worked with Bryan some today, and was very exhausted by this evening, so went to bed early -- I'm thinking around 10:00, then was rudely awakend at 11:00 by Jasmine . . however, I had gotten too warm, and was in a deep sweat, so it was just as well. I had to get up and sponge off, then coudlnt' go back to sleep. I've just finished a couple of games of rummikub online, and feel like I can now sleep again.

{{{{{{{{{{{Ginny}}}}}}}}}}}}} . . . I hope you can find some relief soon! That has to be miserable. If it's any consolation, it's horribly hot here, too.

No thanks, Ginny
I know I desperately need one, but I actually prefer breathing to trying to make this tummy flat again

Hellooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Mooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!
Wow! I can't believe you're in my thread!! -- how many years has it been????
So good to see you around again, Mo.

Our family reunion is tomorrow . . we have 2 more family members missing this year. I expect it's going to be a bit sad, especially for the those kids & spouses. Makes me sad just thinking about it.

It's hot? How about a cool bath or shower?

It's too cold to be having cold showers/baths over here. I already feel like an icicle.

How was your family reunion, Leah?

Hi Trish & Ginny! I just got out of a cold shower -- yep, Trish, it works pretty good to cool the body down in a hurry. I was out potting up my plants this morning and my goodness it is so humid and hot!! I only got one pot done and had to quit. Guess I'll try to do the rest this eveing, tho I am going to bring some of them in the house to do.

The reunion was good, Trish. Not as many there this year, for some reason, but it was still good. Melissa & Billy made it down, tho they were late; then they and my nephew, wife and their two boys came back here to visit. It was a very good evening. Everyone came in saying they'd come here for dessert, so I just whipped up a chocolate cake, and some of my special Chocolate Buttercream frosting and we all feasted on that . . . they were really only joking with me, but they enjoyed every bite of the cake

I'm glad you had such a good reunion, Leah.

I'm having a smaller one in November. My brothers are coming over to see me. I haven't seen them in 15 years. I'm not close to them, so it's going to be interesting.

Trish and Mo have fun at your reunions when you have them. For your sake Trish I hope all goes well with getting together with your brothers. In case you are interested, I hadn't seen my sisters for years until I got together with them for dad. It has been good to see them and I didn't have a problem getting to know them again.

The only thing I do have is my eldest sister wanting the same things I want. Dad had some photo albums from WWII than he promised me and I took them home the last time I was in MS. My sister said she wanted them too but I got them. I simply reminded mom that dad and her had said they were mine. Now my sister wants the set of Black Angus knives that I gave to dad for Christmas years ago. I was going to keep them for myself since they were originally mine but sis has asked mom to give them to her for Christmas this year. Geesh.

Oh and there were 3 guns. Two were dad's and one was my brothers who died. Mom was giving them to my 3 sons until my eldest sister piped up and wanted her daughter who she adopted away years ago but has been reunited with husband to have one. Mom felt since this daughter had her own adoptive family to inherit from that the guns should go to my kids but it gave up bad feelings in my sisters so what we worked out is only 2 of my sons get guns and my next oldest sister's son gets one when it is determined he is mature enough to have one. Until then they will keep the gun for him. Sheesh!

What are you doing this 4th of July? Mom and I are planning on staying at home and just relaxing. Meridian the city where the fireworks will be displayed is an hour away and I'm not willing to drive there and back to see a firework display.

Is 2007 truly expired. Mom said it isn't. I disagree. Your opinion?
