I know that the 4th of July is American independence day, but for some reason, that escapes my mind sometimes. Whatever you're doing, I hope you have a great day.

Hi there, Ginny, Mike & Trish! Guess I missed some of these posts.

What are we doing tomorrow? . . . still not sure. I'd like to join my family at the river, sorta, but it's supposed to rain off & on most of the day. That is now fun. I'm leaning towards going to Bill's sister's for a possible hot dog roast/fireworks display . . her kids are down and have invited us. We usually go to the church picnic and watch our town's fireworks display from there, or have for hte last 4-5 years. It got messed up this year, tho. Seems our town had made an announcement that they weren't having it this year, so Pastor postponed our get-together to Sunday evening and made plans to celebrate his mother's 80th birthday on Saturday, the 4th. Then the town council changed their mind and decided to have it . . . . but, plans were made, and he couldn't very well cancel, so we're just going to do a Sunday evening thing & the kids will set off their own fireworks then.

Is 2007 expired? . . probably on most things, tho I have to say not all. This has been discussed in a couple more threads, and on facebook, so I know you have your answer already, Ginny

We're going on base tomorrow for some fun and to watch the fireworks. We didn't do it last year and the kids want to go this year, so we are going to brave the heat and go have some fun.

Yes Linda, I have my answer.

I am trying to convince my mom she would love to go to the movies to see, The Proposal. So far no luck. And I don't want to go by myself which was her suggestion.

I am on the fence on whether to go see that one or not. I went downtown today, it was crowded because of the 4th.

Hi Linda.

My facebook post about snide comments generated quite a few posts several are between my oldest son and Maggie. Now my son feels hurt and that I am against him. He feels I am talking about HIM with everyone which is true to an extent. But the thread didn't start that way. It wasn't about him. It was about my dislike for 'snide comments'. Why does he have to take that so personal?

As you know I babysat Wednesday night. I don't know if my daughter needs me to sit Thursday night. Right now I feel so frustrated.

Take care, Ginny

Hi Ginny . . and Mike & Mo! Gosh it's been a long time since I have been in here! Shame on me.

Ginny, I saw all the comments, and yes he is the one who started the debate -- guess he thought some of his friends would come in and agree with him or something. Maggie's absolutely right, tho, and I'm glad you posted that. I'm sorry you were so frustrated and hope by now you've gotten a good night's sleep.

But I love the way they catch the light and I noticed there's a bug problem the spiders could help clear up.

I can't think of a bug I'd less rather have hanging around than a spider, tyvm anyway . . . and yes, they CAN catch the light very prettily -- ESPecially when they are outside

Oh! We had two "bug" problems in the house today. The first one was a yellow jacket in the kitchen. I freaked out and ds3 came to my rescue and squished it. Later, when the family was about to go out, ds3 saw a spider on the inside of the screen door. HE freaked out and I squished it. It was a beautiful and very different-looking spider. It was a shame to end its life.

I generally don't squash either bees or spiders but let them go their merry way. I find grasshoppers in the laundry room all the time and let them go too.

However if I ever find a bug like a cockroach I most certainly will squash it.

I have some to spare, if anyone is lacking!

And welcome to my thread, Roberta!

Good to see you, too, Mike. So happy I've not lost all my readers -- I've been very neglectful of this thread

In the chat thread this week, we've been talking about doing projects around the house & how we get our spouses to cooperate. Several of us have shared a funny experience, and this morning as I was chatting with a friend, I remembered a couple more. She suggested I post them here, then post a link in the chat thread, so I will! Also, I'd like to link to the chat thread for any who would like to read this week's posts.

I'm sewing today, so this will be posted as I take short breaks . . .

We've always been do-it-yourself people since before there was such a term, partly out of necessity. As any homeowner knows, that requires a lot time & energy spent on your home. Bill likes to putter in his shed, and that's been great cuz he putters with useful things as well as more creative puttering. But, sometimes his puttering gets in the way of our perpetual list of needful things waiting for his attention. So, a couple of those things had been procrastinated on for too long . . . way too long, actually. One was to put guttering on our house, the other was to put a sidewalk in.

Our land had a bit of a drain problem . . when it rained the ground between the front door and the driveway became quickly saturated until there was water & mud sometimes 3 inches deep. This was not fun to wade thru to get to the car, nor was it fun to be constantly cleaning up the mess tracked in on the carpet & even kitchen vinyl. Not only that, but since we didn't have guttering, to get out our door in a driving rain meant getting completely soaked as we stood under the eaves opening the door with our arms loaded with groceries. I'd talked & talked about these two problems, asking him to please do something. He did. He laid down boards between the house & the front door

One Saturday I'd had enough. So I retrieved a shovel from the shed and just started digging in a general area of where a sidewalk would need to be. He comes over & asks some choice questions about my actions, & I replied nonchalantly: I am digging out some dirt for a sidewalk. Then I plan to call the concrete men and have them deliver some concrete . . . . of course he went into a tizzy telling me all the things I was doing wrong and listing all the things that had to be done first . . etc., etc. Well, what do I know?? I only know I need a sidewalk, and apparently have no one who is interested in building it, so I'll do what I can, and if that doesn't work, I'll do it over again. Sooner or later I'm bound to have enough concrete there so I don't need to practically swim thru a mud hole to get to my car. Several back-breaking hours later, WE finally had the ground ready for a the concrete to be poured.

It was a few more years (and many more reminders) before I made the move to get the gutters up. I remember, in fact, that it was the last summer our son was home -- probably just before he left for the Air Force. I simply drove to the lumber yard, purchased the lumber needed for finishing out the soffits and the guttering I needed, drove back home, parked the pickup (yes, we at least had a pickup by then) under the eaves of the house, set the step ladder in the back of the pickup and started nailing up 2x6x8 boards, with John & I taking turns holding the board & nailing. It wasn't planned to coincide with Bill's arrival home from work, but it was much more work than I'd anticipated, so we only had one board up by the time he arrived. OH yeah. He was . . but only for a short few moments. Then he just shrugged & went to work. With much belly-aching, moaning & groaning, the soffits & the guttering were finally up a few days later. . . .

But what's a woman to do????

I saw a cup once that said a man should not complain about something that is not getting done that woman who is doing it, or something like that.
