I find the lack of Christian bands like this a little apalling. Theoretically we should be monopolizing music, both simple and complicated, should we not? In theory the top artists in each genre should be Christians. After all, we are the ones who have God's anointing. Of course this is just theory and is not reality. I suppose in that sense, all Christian music of superb quality is evangelical, regardless of style or message, since it is proclaiming God's glory to all the world. I sometimes wonder if maybe it is because we try to evangelise through our music that it has become so lackluster. Instead of writing music for God, we write music for the world. I'm curious - maybe, just maybe, writing music that glorifies God instead of trying to make Him more accessible to others would be more effective at evangelism? I'm sure this has already been discussed to death, but would anyone like to comment on this?

King, I am sure there are alot of progresive Christian musicians out there, some in bands that are getting a little exposure in the world some that are playing in churches. But that type of music even in the world with the exception of 1970s mega bands like Yes and Kansas and to a lesser extent King Crimson, or PFM will never be popular enough to be worth the while of those who want to be heard, that is underground audiophile stuff. Stations that are playing to the masses like Air 1 have a target audience and a limited playlist, as do the record lables, because pop is what survives. Always has, always will. Secular stations that have found a niche Playing classic rock or oldies always get reduced to some dementedly narrow playlist for one reason or another. At least in the large markets.

Personally I'd like to see more blues based Christian Music, Like Darrel Mansfield or Glen Kaiser stuff. But all the good stuff in that Genre seems to be drug and alchohol induced, just as hallucinogins play a role in progressive. I think Some artists like Phil Keaggy and Kerry Livegren have done some fantastic things under the influence of Jesus, But you wont hear them on air 1

Lest I ramble too much... XM seems to be doing something right but it wont be long til it too is commercial and dememted like the rest.

there is a lot of good stuff out there but you have to dig for it. but dont expect to get it spoon fed, or topping the charts any time soon.

I haven't seen too many C prog bands in the desired style mentioned so far. I don't read this forum much so sorry for the late reply, too.

Glass Hammer
Akacia
Salem Hill
Divine In Sight
Fall of Echoes
Ajalon
Neal Morse

I know there are many others but you should check out http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/christianprog to get a good handle on current ones.

There have been 2 CProg compilations put out that feature many of these bands that may be worth picking up, too.

I was big into the prog bands you mentioned in my younger days, but I focus on modern rock and metal on my show to reach the youth. If you don't mind some harder prog, there are several excellent ones there too. PM me.

I knew that there would be some one who despises the canon. The canon seems to always blow people away.

HA. I've sang formal and classical music since I was a small child. What I dislike about the post I was commenting on was that some feel they need to denigrate other forms of music to promote their own favorites.

You can like hymns and other such without sneering at other people's musical tastes. And I've seen more than one person come through this folder doing just that.

I have spent a lot of time listening to and reviewing hundreds of Christian progressive rock albums. You can check out my web site Virtuosity that is full of reviews and interviews and recommendations, at http://www.spiritualprog.com.

Albums that I recommend the most:

Anything by Iona (like Yes with a celtic feel and female vocals)
Neal Morse - Testimony, One, ? (some of the best prog out there)
Spock's Beard - V, and Snow (Neal Morse's prog band)
Salem Hill - Catatonia and Mimi's Magic Moment (original prog with a hint of Kansas)
Glass Hammer - Lex Rex (very proggy Wakeman/Emerson lovers)
Divine In Sight - Sorrow and Promise (Yes/Rush stylists)
Echolyn - As the World (think Gentle Giant meets modern rock, the best album of the decade (1990's))
Casino - S/T (early Genesis like concept album about Christ with the reverand Geoff Mann and Clive Nolan of neo prog band Pendragon)
Proto-kaw - anything (new/old avant garde prog from Kerry Livgren of Kansas)
Platypus - Platt Opus (Ty Tabor of King's X prog band with Dream Theater/Dixie Dregs alum)
Orphan Project - Orphan Found (Kansas like prog meets modern rock)

Of course, the following excellent prog albums were released to the Christian market:

Kerry Livgren/AD - Kansas veteran had prog elements in all his work
Mastedon - Lofcaudio (John Elefente of Kansas heavy prog band)
Arkangel - Warrior (Jethro Tull like prog with up front Christian lyrics)
The Awakening - Into Thy Hands (very Yes like prog released on Forefront, even covered Yes' Onward)
Michael Omartian - White Horse
Older stuff by Jeff Johnson
Jimmy Hotz - Beyond the Crystal Sea (Yes like prog from the early 80's, hard to find)
Vindication - s/t (70's hard to find classic prog with a solid Christian message)

And there are a host of other bands to suit your fancy, most of which have sound clips.

The CPR volume 1 and 2 CD's are a good place to start too.

Happy hunting!

We were there during the early days of Christian rock during the Jesus movement.
Known as JUBAL, from Ohio, we were a prog-rock power trio that record companies
didn't know what to do with! We have reformed with original members in Nashville
Check us out at www.QuBmusic.com or here at myCCM.org/QuB. We're in the process of writing
some new material for the next album. Check out the tunes & see if we fit the retro
vibe you're describing. See ya...............

I'm really surprised there's not a one-stop thread for this kind of thing, you would think it's a popular topic. Or maybe there is and I just missed it

Anyway, can anyone here recommend some good Christian music? Okay, that's not a very good question. Uh, kinda what I'm looking for is, if anyone here is familiar with the secular 70s band Yes, some sort of band who sounds similar to them, but with a Christian message. In other words, uplifting, well-composed progressive rock with an overtly Christian theme. Why not just listen to Yes and similar non-Christian bands, you might ask. Simply because I have burned myself out on secular music and, for whatever reason, unless a song is obviously spiritual in nature, it can really throw a wrench in my walk with God.

Does anyone know what I mean? I just find that most Christian music isn't really up my alley. I'm sure if there is a band like this, they aren't very popular, but I thought I'd try it anyway.

Speaking of which I've heard a band called Glass Hammer mentioned, supposedly they're very good Christian progressive rock. Can anyone confirm this?

well what your speaking of isnt really my style of music, but i have been in the same position. i can listen to some secular music and be okay, but for me the stuff i listened to before i knew God was disrespectful to him so obviously that was a problem. i killer prayed about it, ended up throwing out a large cd collection and sometime in the last year Gods really hooked me up with some music i can more than jam to. He knows what you'll like more than anyone else or even yourself would so i hope you dont consider such things as too trivial to ask him for. hes done alot for me in this area. and i believe God likes to headbang

This is a great thread! I've been a prog fan since my early teens (70s) - way before they were calling it "prog rock". The first two concerts I ever attended were Yes and ELP - I saw them within six weeks of each other while living in Germany in the spring of '74. I don't think I've been the same since. Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson are two of my all time musical heros.

Thanks for the names of Christian prog groups - outside of Iona & Kerry Livgrin I wasn't aware of too many of those. Will definately search out some of those bands on Amazon.

hi, i'm a new member. i just stumbled across this and wanted to chime in. trout hound covered much of the christian prog but i'd like to add that the neal morse testimony dvd is a very good show. if you get a chance check it out. also glass hammers lex rex live is a good show. ajalon was discovered by wakeman and played on some of their songs. the bass player for neal morse, randy george, is a member of ajalon. livgren released a double cd around '90 called decade that covered his solo stuff and work with the band a.d. being a yes fan myself i was totally taken aback when last year i stumbled upon a song by the ccm group 4Him that had jon anderson as guest vocalist.

Hi bro's,
I'm new to this forum also. This is a great topic!!!! First album I ever bought was "Close To The Edge" by Yes, in 1973 I think. Was big time into the prog-rock stuff all through the 70's......Yes, ELP, Kansas, Pink Floyd, Tull, and Rush. Then some of these bands were having so many personnel changes, and the music started to go off in a different direction that I kinda lost interest.....In the 80's started getting into heavy metal. I should mention, all this was B.C. (before becoming a Christian).
I realized as a new believer that much of what I'd come to love over the years just didn't fit my new worldview, lyrically speaking. Found tons of good Christ honoring music to listen to, but alas, not very much in the prog-rock genre, so thank you KingKrimson for asking about this........and a BIG thank you to trout_hound and QuB for the info you posted. I'll have to check it out.
Also, you might be interested, There's a CD put out by St. Clair Entertainment Group titled "Progressive Rock Classics" I found at Wal Mart a few years back. It's got an incredible re-make of Rick Wakeman's "Journey To The Center Of The Earth" and Yes' "And You And I"...also done by Wakeman.
God's Peace to you, frank

Absolutely, Mike. I've always thought Aqualung contained some amazing spiritual insights (my editor says he heard Ian Anderson is a Christian; only God knows).

His wife wrote the lyrics for that song I believe, not him.

If you think ? is good, you absolutely must get his newest release, Sola Scriptura. The story of Martin Luther's "rebellion" put to some of the best music he's ever written. He just keeps getting better.

I found the entry for the song "Aqualung" on Wikipedia. It quotes Ian Anderson in an interview with Guitar World. The quote is only five lines but even so I'll just bring up the pertinent excerpts to avoid a TOS violation. Feel free to double check on Wiki (just search for "Aqualung").

quote:

The idea came about from a photograph my wife at the time took of a tramp in London

quote:

So from that photograph and those sentiments, I began writing the words to 'Aqualung.' I can remember sitting in a hotel room in L.A., working out the chord structure for the verses. It's quite a tortured tangle of chords, but it was meant to really drag you here and there and then set you down into the more gentle acoustic section of the song.

My theory is that she got a songwriting credit for the photo that inspired the song (and what a way to get on your lady's good side). Her name is listed second where the lyric writer is normally credited (at least from my observations) but according to Ian Anderson, he wrote the lyrics (or if we read it to the letter at least started them). Anderson had a rep for being insufferable in his heyday but I'm not thinking he had a rep for lying.

Anyway I found the tidbit about his wife writing Aqualung interesting so I checked it out and that is what I found.

I wanted to tell you about a christian music source that I use which is very helpful. If you haven't tryed urge music yet, you need to. Just go to www.URGE.com and try out the selections of music you want to hear. You can hear them free for 30 seconds and if you decide to you may purchase. The fees are like $9 to $10 dollars for a month subscription and you can download all you like and start you a christian music library like myself. Some christian bands that I have found very inspirational are Mercy Me, Michael W. Smith, Newboys and Petra. Another source I use is at my local Life Way Christian Book Store where they have a variety of christian cd's that they will let you listen to before you buy. My latest purchase from them was the new WOW Hits 2007 dvd which has 30 of this years top christian artists and bands, plus music videos. I found it to be very compelling and an excellent additon to my christian music collection.

First, to the OP: I always had a soft spot for Degarmo & Key, and especially like their live CD "Rock Solid: Absolutely Live". Go to itunes and check out some of their other stuff (I only suggest itunes because it is easy to get audio samples of almost every album they have put out). Lots of synth, lots of crazy lead guitar, pretty vanilla lyrics, but they have some really great songs (When The Son Begins To Reign is a personal favorite).

Second, I just listened a bunch of clips from Neal Morse's Sola Scriptura and it is outstanding musically from what I could hear. I haven't checked out the lyrics, but I will definitely be buying this one if they look good!

Lots of good recommendations here, I didn't know there was so much Christian prog out there! Joy :)

I've heard there's some controversy over the lyrics, to the point where the cd almost didn't get released. Not sure of the whole story, though. If you like Neal's stuff then you definitely won't regret buying the cd.

I concur. While I thought is was ok when I first got it, "Sola Scriptura" has grown on me over the past few weeks of listening to it and I now put it up with both "One" and "?".

I still have to get "Testimony".
