I don't think so - it was on the same program as a story about stolen merchandise being sold on ebay.
And, I caught another glimpse of the same program late Saturday night, so I don't know how many times they replayed it or the date of the original telecast.

Tonight, Anderson Silva fights Travis Lutter --but Travis is 1.5 lb over, so it is not a title fight! And he has to pay 10% of his earnings as a fine...
I want to see Quintin Jackson fight marvin Eastman; who is Mirko Crocop fighting?

Anyone see the Renzo Gracie/Frank Shamrock fight? I didn't get to see it. I saw the play by play and watched the post fight interviews(which obviously had to different stories). I was just wondering if the knees were accidental or if Shamrock was looking for a way out?
I guess David Loiseau was dominated in the undercard. He has had a rough return since losing to Franklin. I wonder if the Franklin fight messed with his head a little?

The knee that finished the fight was ruled intentional b/c he had a previous warning about hitting to the back of the head. I wasn't sure it was really intentional, but in the post-fight interview Shamrock said he knew he was hitting the back of his head and figured if he hit him there, he'd move his head. Sounds intentional to me.
Kinda stinks for Showtime that it happened on their first night. Gracie was winning the fight and I'm sure he wasn't being over-dramatic. Renzo is the one who fought with a broken arm before, isn't he? Anyway, I thought Frank was a bit of a tool last night.
The women's fight was fun though.

Thanks. In the interview I saw, Shamrock made the comment that he thought he was winning. What I got from the play by play online is that he was getting dominated. Either way he lost and only Shamrock knows if he was looking for a way out.
Maybe he took Renzo to lightly?

UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre (Pictures) will not make his first 170-pound title defense Feb. 3 versus Matt Serra (Pictures), the UFC announced in its Web site Tuesday, as an injured knee will keep the French-Canadian fighter out of action.

I agree. I think this was just a filler fight anyway. Diego Sanchez will probably be the next big fight for GSP, but Sanchz just fought and they probably didn't want GSP to have a huge layoff so they scheduled an easy fight to keep him sharp. I don't mean to disrespect Serra, but I just don't think he is in the same league as GSP. Give him a few years and who knows what could happen.

Thanks, Hiker. Interesting article. I agree that standing the fighters up is a disservice to the grapplers and favors the kickboxers. Especially in Gracie Jujitsu, since they tend to wear an opponent down on the ground before engaging in some spectacular submission. Remember the old days without time limits? I don't know how Royce did it back then, plus if they won they fought another opponent.
I guess the stand up rule wouldn't really apply to the ground and pounders since they always look pretty busy, but I find them the least entertaining to be honest. For instance, I am more often than not, bored by Tito Ortiz fights (with a few exceptions like the cool knockout of Evan Tanner).

I agree. I'm always very impressed with the number and complexity of BJJ techniques in his arsenal, but he seems to have a real problem actually finishing anyone off. Hopefully GSP will get healthy quickly. I really enjoyed his fight against Hughes. The Miletich team has had some tough luck lately... of course, they had a great run.

I'm a total UFC fan too. I watch it every time it comes up. That was an awesome fight between Lidell and Tito. Tito put up a fight for awhile. i also liked the other undercard fights too. It had some good action in those. Imagine if Mike Tyson gets in the Octogon. That would be interesting. It wouild be a total sell out crowd. yes, Tyson is a bit past his prime but it would still be interesting.

I agree I think it would fill the seats, but I don't think it would be that good of fight. I think Tyson would get overwelmed and would either get knocked out or lose control and do something stupid.

This definitely was a good fight and Tito really improved on his stand up skills, but in the end Liddell was to much for him.

I agree that a Tyson fight may bring in a lot of publicity, but it would be a farce. I'd doubt he'd last a minute in there. Anyway, Tyson's deal is with Pride at the present, not UFC. I'm sure it's a publicity stunt to attempt to compete with UFC. IMO, if they want to compete, the first thing they need to do is clean up their audio-visuals. Here's an article...

The Asia-based PRIDE Fighting Championship is looking to make inroads in North America with publicity drawing events, such as Pride signing Mike Tyson. North America has long been territory of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). PRIDE will host its first North American tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on October 21st, 2006, and is hoping to attract many new people to its form of MMA.
Perhaps that's why the bigwigs revealed a bombshell during the last stop of a recent 3-day media tour, with PRIDE president Nobuyuki Sakakibara calmly saying:
"We have formed an alliance with Mike Tyson and we are planning projects replete with MMA appeal. He's not merely a guest, but a partner who will help us create an MMA revolution." Tyson himself was at the press gathering, as if to give credence to a story which might at first seem too fantastic to be believed.
There were few details from either PRIDE or Tyson after the announcement. When asked point-blank if he plans to become an official PRIDE fighter, Tyson would only say, "I am happy that I can be a part of PRIDE, which is a great organization. I can't comment on my contract, because it's confidential."
Mike Tyson actually coming out of retirement to fight again is of course possible, but unlikely.
Tyson's an acknowledged MMA fan; he was the guest referee on a card in Manchester, England, on March 18th of this year, with the bout lasting only a minute. But when asked by ring announcer Bas Rutten, a former UFC heavyweight champion, whether he would fight again, Tyson gave a flat, 'no'.
"My fighting days are over, but I love and enjoy watching cagefighting, though," Tyson told Rutten.
A fine article by Kevin Iole for the Las Vegas Review-Journal adds:
"Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has no plans to return as an active boxer, but will fight a series of up to 10 exhibition matches in the next several months, sources close to Tyson said Friday.
"Tyson, 40, will train for those bouts at the Aladdin. The source said a ring will be set up in the casino and Tyson will work out in a public area for an hour a day."
The Review-Journal continued:
"Tyson is expected to box an exhibition on a Pride Fighting Championship mixed martial arts card, though the date and site are not determined. Pride has a card scheduled for the Thomas & Mack Center on Oct. 21, though Tyson reportedly will not fight on that show.
"However, Tyson...isn't planning to join Pride."
Of course with no one talking in an official capacity, there's no way to verify Iole's sources. But there's no immediate reason to doubt the story, and it would seem to best fit the known facts.
All the same, forgive me if I'm wary of the possible outcome here, or for MMA sports in particular. One very pointed, but entertaining, editorial on this announcement comes from insidepulse.com. As that commentator noted:
"Apparently someone forgot to tell Sakakibara that "Iron" Mike Tyson is completely bat*** ************* insane. [Tyson is] notoriously unpredictable...Pride is taking a huge gamble by bringing in Tyson in any capacity, but it could pay off big time in America for the Japanese organization.
"I'm sure we'll get some great soundbites, and Pride will get a ton of press in America, but in the end Tyson will flake and the whole thing will be forgotten about after a few months. However, having Mike Tyson as a part of Pride could gain them enough mainstream attention to become a legitimate threat to UFC in America."
Which perhaps is true enough. But for those too young to remember, it didn't have to be like this for Tyson. At one time he seemed sure to go down in history as quite possibly the best fighter of the 20th Century, perhaps better than Joe Louis or even Muhammad Ali.
But that was then, and this is now. And while I may not allow myself to be as hard on Mike as insidepulse.com, they are exactly right when they realize that Tyson has no one else to blame for his fall but himself.
Can Mike pick himself up and become a better man out of the ring than he was within it? It is possible; George Foreman was known to have many of the same problems as Tyson. With faith, family and a little luck, Foreman was able to beat his demons.
If Mike's small incursions with PRIDE turn out to be part of the long road back to self-respect and dignity for the former champ, then we should truly wish him the best. But if this simply gives us more of the same flesh-eating, wife-beating creep who left the ring last year, then the fight game is better off without him.

one thing to keep in mind as well. there is A LOT more to the sport than the ufc. there is also no such thing as "ultimate fighting". the name of the sport is mixed martial arts, or mma, for short. yes, ufc is the largest north american promotion, but there are many other promotions as welll. in japan, there is pride, shooto, and deep. In canada, there is tko, ucw, and mfc. in the us, there is the ifl, strikeforce, and elite xc.
there are a lot of good fighters out there that don't fight for the ufc. i highly recommend going to a live fight sometime, or catching some of the other organizations on tv. it's work it.

BTW, Pride has an upcoming bout between Wanderlei Silva and Dan Henderson on 24 Feb..
K1 Strikeforce has some phenomenal fighters (male and female), with many more Europeans. Muay Thai and kickboxing are HUGE in Holland.
IFL is getting attention on the West Coast, with Pat Militich, Frank Shamrock, Carlos Newton coaching.
The gambling corporation Bodog is really pushing their own MMA league, too.

Hey, what do y'all think about Randy Couture's come back? Personally, I think he can take Tim Silvia, but if he becomes the champ again I'd hate to see him have to fight Cro Cop now that he's UFC!

I am not really sure how I feel about his comback. He is getting past his prime and I don't want to see him turn into a another Evander Holyfield. Hopefully he knows what he's doing.
If he does win I do think he will lose, probably pretty badly, to Cro Cop.

i know it's not the best, but bodogfight isn't bad. they allow you to download their fights for free from bodogfight.com, and they even format it for you for your video ipod.

I agree, Crocop would devastate Randy Couture (but Randy needs to defeat Tim Sylvia first to even get the shot at Mirko).
BTW, was Herb Dean the ref in the Shamrock-Gracie fight?

Hey, Guys! Wow... I had no idea this thread would go on for so long when I first asked if there were any UFC fans out there. Now I have to try and catch up after my absence from the Board!
About Randy Couture's comeback... I just have this terrible vision of him getting totally crushed by Tim Sylvia. I love Randy and I think he's awesome, but I think his time has passed.
I just saw the fight card for UFC 70: Nations Collide that's gonna take place over in the UK on April 21st:
Mirko Cro Cop vs. Gabriel Gonzaga
Michael Bisping vs. Elvis Sinosic
Andrei Arlovski vs. Fabricio Werdum
Forrest Griffin vs. Lyoto Machida
I'm anxious to see Forrest fight again... I was crushed when he lost against Keith Jardine. I hope he does well this time.

I do remember Shamrock said the only way he would lose would be if he died in there. Maybe he was taking it a little too seriously.
