Oh my! What helped me through those days of abstinence was getting in touch with my inner masochist:

Look at it this way: Thoser feelings are telling you you are doing the right thing, and that you should give yourself some BIG TIME CREDIT for being in charge!

Day 4...hanging in there....getting better...not quite so on edge. Can even relent from biting somone's head off *laughs* (Thank God I was home alone all weekend!!)
I started walking whenever the urge comes on...
I want to eat like crazy....but I do not want to gain anymore weight than I already need to lose!!!

During those early days I chewed almost anything I could think of: sugarless gum (those like Trident with Xylitol are actually good for your teeth), toothpicks, coffee stir-sticks, a piece of a cotton ball (strangely, those helped me a lot), beef jerky, peanuts...
The good news is that after 3 days the physical withdrawal of nicotine is over and the rest is mental (that's not to say it's easy, but that you've survived the worst).
Day 748 nicotine-FREE, Day 845 tobacco-FREE

Silverstring a Champion for 3 months!!! WOW!
In_Him_ I_Soar is a Champion too for 4 days ! Wow!!
JimboFletch= I had to laugh when you said that you used a piece of cotton ball! But who knows you could write to the company about another use for their product and they pay you for the idea! Seriously thanks for your ideas which hopefully will help another quitter to stay a quitter because of your suggestions.
Hope to read about some more success stories.

156 days.
X 20 = 3120 cigarettes not smoked
X 15 USD = 2340 USD saved (a whole lot spent on chewing gum and favourite foods though...)

I'm not so short of breath anymore, I notice smells I didn't notice before. It does come with weight-increase. I guess it is compensating for the loss of one oral stimulation by replacing it with another. Eating more, in other words. I've used food and drink treats as coping techniques against craves.
At the same time I've become more interested in a healthier lifestyle, so I'm on the lookout for sustainable changes in diet and physical activity. Not quite there yet, but I'm not despairing!

Great reading your testimony Sliverstring!
What a great reward to not to be out of breath!
I am sure that as your are quitting a habit that you have had for years (22?)
that you will have the discipline to lose the extra pounds too!

I haven't been around for a LONG time. Hubby is in the process of quitting. I'm so proud of him! Since early August he's gone from 2 packs a day to 5 cigarettes a day! He's on Chantix right now and it seems to be working. He's having funky dreams but nothing major. I'm just happy that he's doing so much better! He is in the process of identifying triggers that make him want to light one up and it seems to be driving more then anything. The problem is is that he drives ALOT! Just pray for him!

On Friday, 9/19, my mother underwent a procedure to repair an aortic aneurism. Everything went exceedingly well for her and she has improved daily with only very minor complications. But for me there was, first, the tense ordeal of waiting for the procedure to be finished and, then, the long, boring hours sitting with her for the few days she stayed in the hospital. Then that Sunday we drove an hour going & coming to take her to my sister's home.
The following week I took a week's vacation. I mainly stayed around the house and my wife had to work.
Had I gone through this a few years back, I would have spent a great deal of time craving and/or feeding the Nicotine Slave Master. Instead, I didn't experience any cravings and I was able to be fully present wherever I was or with whomever I was with.
For anyone still struggling, it WILL get better. MUCH better! The price you're paying now will begin producing huge dividends in your life in the near future.
Day 763 nicotine-FREE, Day 860 tobacco-FREE

Was or is your mother a smoker?
I know a man who had the same surgery and was a smoker,
now an ex-smoker! PTL!!

She's a non-smoker. Her mother (my grandmother) and one of my mother's uncles died from a ruptured aneurism. The doctor says these tend to run in families.

I'm praying as well Jimbo. My grandmother died due to complications of an aneurysm 11 years ago this past July. She never smoked a day in her life, but her mother also passed due to what they believe was an aneurysm now.
As for my hubby - he's gone from two packs a day a month ago to 2 cigarettes a day today, if that! I'm so proud of him! As a reward we budgeted out $30 a MONTH to add a data plan to his cell service! $30 a month for something sounds a lot better then at least $30 a week going to stuff that was essentially just going up in smoke.
