ORIGINAL: vvmyrss Hey guys, I have just been reminded by a loving poster that I haven't posted here in a while. Here is the reason why. As some of you may know my dad passed away in April and Father's Day was a little tough. I'll get back to posting here in a couple of days. hey you! More than a couple of days have gone by, and YOU ARE MISSED! My dad passed away 11 years ago; I still have the last Father's Day card I bought for him but never got to give him. I can empathise.

I was walking down a street in Barcelona with my wife yesterday after a great meal after a walk in in one of their sensational public parks. I thourgth "a cigarette would taste wonderful now". Then I thought about something else. So I guess I'm free? Still quit

Silverstring, I am so glad that your wife was with you when you got the urge or thought to smoke. A wife is a great supporter to help their husband's to stay strong!! We are proud that you made the right choice: to stay a quitsticker!!

I became addicted to nicotine while in the Navy. The culture almost seemed to encourage it. A pack of cigarettes cost 27 cents on base and just 13 cents outside the territorial waters of the US in the late 1970s. If you smoked, you could take a smoke break at least once an hour. If you didn't smoke, you had to continue working until normal breaks (lunch, dinner). About the only time smoking wasn't allowed was during refueling or handling ammunition. And if you decided to quit smoking, it was an uphill battle because you couldn't escape it. But I've been out for almost 30 years. So I can only guess that the culture around smoking has changed somewhat.

I have been nudged by a loving sister to come check in, and no you are not nagging. Every so often I take a break from Crosswalk when I feel it is starting to take over my life a bit too much. Been spending lots of time with the Lord and making sure my priorities are where they should be. I haven't slipped and am still going strong, just been taking a break from the computer and such, except for posting on my blog. I miss my dad terribly, but I figure if this didn't drive me back to smoking, and it didn't, I can pretty much handle anything. Not saying it's impossible for me to slip, I've known people who have been non-smokers for 5 years that have slipped, but I've learned that Christ is my comfort, not cigarettes.

So glad that you are back, Vanessa! You bring sunshine to this thread!! I must say I was very impressed by this statement by you: I've learned that Christ is my comfort, not cigarettes. I put the bold print on it! It is so wonderful that you have many wonderful memories of your dad! What a fortunate daughter! Yeah!! so glad to hear from you that you are still a quitsticker! To God be praised!!

14 months, 8 days. 434 days X 20 = 8680 cigarettes not smoked, 4340 $ saved (ap. the cost of our holiday to France and Spain for 11 days). 34.72 grams of tar not inhaled to my lungs 3.4 grams of nicotine not entering my bloodstream

Yesterday would have been my Dad's 83rd birthday. He died about 4 years ago after 6 years in a nursing home following a serious stroke that left him unable to talk or use his right side. Men on his side of the family usually lived well into their 90s. His father lived to be 103. But dad smoked most of his life. The smoking caused premature plaque build up in his carotid artery - which eventually caused the stroke. Quitting was something he put off and put off. Finally, at 67, he quit and stayed quit. But, for him, the damage that would shorten his life had been done. Waiting until the notion strikes or something better comes along delays FREEDOM for a day, then a week, then a month, then a year, then a decade, and, finally, a lifetime. Last week was the perfect time to quit because the physical withdrawal would have been over by now. The next best time to quit is RIGHT NOW. Then, next week the physical withdrawal would be over and the journey to healing and FREEDOM would have begun. Day 1,161 tobacco-FREE, Day 1,064 nicotine-FREE.

Of course, I'd like to see the people in the smoking thread posting in this thread. And I'm kind of wondering why there's a smoking thread in health & fitness, when there's nothing healthy about it. Anyone heard from vvmyrss??? Hope she's okay. Okay, the quit meter I usually use is all jacked up and telling me I saved $75,000 in 2 1/2 years. Wouldn't that be something??? Here's the real deal: I have been free of cigarettes for 808 days, 18 hours, 29 minutes & 22 seconds I have not smoked 16,175 cigarettes since then, and I have saved a total of $4,246.05.

Sorry Pat, but I've had several in my family and friends die as a direct result of smoking when genetics and environment could not be blamed. Only tobacco. The only thing smoking does is feed the nicotine addiction. Period. We kid ourself to claim anything else. Remove nicotine from the equation and nobody would smoke dried, smelly tobacco leaves. You will also cause withdrawal symptoms to begin within an hour. Those symptoms will not kill you. Tobacco will, eventually.

If one doesn't believe smoking can kill them, that is certainly one's prerogative--but it doesn't mean they're right. quote:
lurk and on occasion post here; but as of yet I'm not ready to quit, and you have to admit it, no-one here is going to "support" smokers, so what's the point in posting here? This is the quitting smoking support thread.

ORIGINAL: Pat-rebel_lady The reply I expected. When I smoked, I'd occasionally have a non-smoker tell me that they didn't think there was anything wrong with smoking and that there was no proof smoking did any harm. Even then, I thought they were, at best, naive. All I had to do was think about the times I nearly coughed up a lung at night or had difficulty breathing. Funny, I've not had such an experience since I quit. None. Nada. Zip. Aside from all that, I can take a trip, planned or on the spur of the moment, for a day or two weeks without any concern whatsoever about getting a nicotine fix. I can do anything, go anywhere, be with anyone for as long as I want without having to worry about my old master, nicotine. Can you say that? Not worrying that the next twinge in my body is going to turn out to be oral or lung cancer is a nice benefit. But more than that, the thing I value more than anything else on a day to day basis is the SHEER FREEDOM FROM THE NICOTINE SLAVE MASTER!!!!

ORIGINAL: Pat-rebel_lady Sounds like nothing has changed over the years. One thing about smokers, they accept people for who they are and where they are along life's road; they don't try to change them into who they want them to be. Of course they are like that. Nobody enables another like one with the same addiction. I couldn't imagine a smoker trying to encourage their buddies to quit so they can continue alone. In any case, if someone could guarantee me that I'd never have any tobacco related health issues, I'd live to be 105 if I smoked 3 packs a day, and that my favorite brand would be supplied without cost for the remainder of my life, I would still choose to remain FREE from that 900 pound nicotine-monkey around my neck, 24/7, 365 days a year. There is no way on earth anyone can convince me that God wants me or anyone else to remain a slave to tobacco. It flies in the face of scripture. Jesus said, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly." (John 10:10) It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1) Act as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God. (1 Peter 2:16) Your smoking buddies would never share such messages of hope with you, simply because they are not enjoying them - and probably don't want you to either.
