In case you missed it, I posted this in the other thread:
quote:

I remember, when I was working a few years ago, when all the stink started about smoking and second-hand smoke and businesses had to make a separate area for smokers to smoke in (since then smokers have been confined to out-side or off company property). Anyway, the company I worked for gave us a smoking room with an exhaust fan to draw the smoke outside --- of course the lunch room had these same type fans and all smokers used the tables under these so as not to bother non-smokers --- well they put us in this room, yet the biggest anti-smokers, moaners and grumblers came into the smoke room with us. We asked why, their answer was, "We like sitting with you all, you're so much fun to be around; you just have to know that we'll do and say whatever it takes to get you to quit."

I didn't miss it. Let me tell my own story.

Years ago, back in the late 70s, I got sick and tired of smoking and finally quit (and managed to stay quit a year before stupidly caving in moment of stress and anger).

Guess what my good old smoking buddies did. They made fun of me. One even blew smoke in my face. They rode my back until they were convinced they could not destroy my resolve. The ONLY support I got was from nonsmokers.

So don't tell me how saintly smokers are to one another and how accepting they are to everybody else.

T'ain't so.

Non-smoker here.

If I'm not welcomed here . . . I'll leave with absolutely no hard feelings.

Two things I'd like to say, please:

(1) Kudos and attaboys for those who wish to stop smoking and have and/or are currently doing so.

(2) I find it very interesting that in the Smokers ONLY thread (yes, I've read some of it; specifically the last 3 or 4 pages) no one is allowed to post over there except for people who are smokers and who have no plans of quitting. I find it equally interesting that the very one who made those very adamant rules is now coming over to this thread with what appears to be an agenda. I haven't picked up on this same attitude in any of the other smokers over in the "only" thread.

I saw a poster who belongs to this thread post something over there yesterday; and then humbly and sincerely apologize when his hand was verbally and publicly slapped for doing so (slapped, btw, not by a mod). Yet the hand-slapper can come over here and pontificate about how horrible people are towards smokers?

It seems, at the least, quite very contradictory to me.

Just one more thing, please . . . why does it have to be such a "me" against "you" / "us" against "them" kinda thing? For Goodness Sake, we are all Christians here.

That's all.

May Our Lord abundantly bless EACH of y'all who reads this post.

Haven't been posting much due to some health problems my husband is going through, but I am still quit. I would like to respond here to some of the most recent posts. All smokers know the health risk and unfortunately the addiction is stronger than that fear, at least for most folks. In defense of Pat here, very few people have successfully quit smoking based on what someone else thinks they should do. Until she reaches the place that she wants to quit for her own reasons regardless of what those reasons are she won't succeed. This may not be true of all smokers, but for myself when I got down to why I was having so much trouble putting them down, it was because I truly didn't want to give them up. People do what they want to do and if they want to do something they will. Same with smoking. I quit because I felt it hurt my witness, smoking killed my dad, and I was just ready.

Honestly, I feel non-smokers can encourage me more right now than smokers. I don't want someone to tell me it's okay to smoke, I want someone to tell me not to touch them anymore. Blessings all.

Don't touch them anymore!

It's GREAT to see you here again, Vanessa! How's your husband doing now? (if it's ok to ask - if not, no worries)

I believe there are several people who are non-smokers that post in this thread, just for the opportunity to cheer others on.

Vanessa, it's great to see you post and that you are still free. I also agree with your comments. Nobody can make another want to quit and, sometimes, trying to help another see the bad in continuing just reinforces the choice to continue.

Being Free has become my greatest joy in this journey!

Thank you! My husband is having partial seizures and has possibly suffered a mild stroke, his left side is a little weak. Waiting to have the EEG done next week.

Yes, I know. My point is sometimes we need someone to be blunt and to the point and not sugar coat anything, or at least I do.

My name's Manda and I am a non-smoker.

I am a carer for someone with mental health issues who smokes. He is also an on and off recovering heroin addict.

I cannot abide the smell of cigarette smoke, either in the air or on someone's clothes or breath. I have a sensitive nose and cigarette smoke makes my nose feel weird inside and it also makes me feel sick. If I am in a smoky atmosphere for any length of time (as I was when I worked in a day centre for homeless people) I get a noseache (up in the bridge of my nose) and headache.

But as far as I can, I try to accept smokers as they are, including their habit, just as I try to accept anyone else as they are. I don't make any derogatory remarks, nor do I try and talk to them about cutting down or giving up (unless they've asked me to). I don't mention the smell of the smoke or how it affects me (here is the first time I've ever mentioned it in the company of smokers).

I do ask them not to smoke in my car or my home, and if they're smoking out in the street I will try and stand upwind of them, to try and avoid smoke drifting into my face.

But that's it.

Does that mean I am not accepting smokers as they are?

The reply I expected.

When I smoked, I'd occasionally have a non-smoker tell me that they didn't think there was anything wrong with smoking and that there was no proof smoking did any harm.

Even then, I thought they were, at best, naive. All I had to do was think about the times I nearly coughed up a lung at night or had difficulty breathing.

Funny, I've not had such an experience since I quit.

None. Nada. Zip.

Aside from all that, I can take a trip, planned or on the spur of the moment, for a day or two weeks without any concern whatsoever about getting a nicotine fix. I can do anything, go anywhere, be with anyone for as long as I want without having to worry about my old master, nicotine.

Can you say that?

Not worrying that the next twinge in my body is going to turn out to be oral or lung cancer is a nice benefit. But more than that, the thing I value more than anything else on a day to day basis is the SHEER FREEDOM FROM THE NICOTINE SLAVE MASTER!!!!

I can't say it enough, I REJOICE for you in your FREEDOM!!!

Of course, I'd like to see the people in the smoking thread posting in this quitting thread. Always happy to see people overcome their addictions.

Smoking is harmful.

Quitting isn't easy.

Praise God, I'm free now (I hope). This happened after a lot of help and support from you in this room. Prior to this, parts of my family and some of my friends did try to talk me into quitting, pointing out it's bad for my health (duh) and that I was stupid and weak (some of them aren't my friends any more). All true, I'm sure, but after an evenings barrage of this I just couldn't wait for them to clear out so I could light up and get some illusion of peace.

So sick and tired of "understanding" friends and family seeing yet another weak willed defeat in this area, I did not tell them about the quit before several days/weeks into this last attempt.

Craves, be them mental or physical, are very stressful. Chemicals mess with the brain, and previous defeats are prominent in the mind. So let's all remember this, and cut each other a lot of slack here.

Ultimately: All you need is ONE successful attempt. Keep at it.

Awesome! What encouraging reports from our quitstickers!

Vanessa, we will be praying for your husband. I agree with you:God is in control. That is good advise. We all need to put complete trust in God in all
things.

If I am correct this is 59 days for you, Vanessa! Wow! and praise the Lord!

I really feel like I'm getting slammed lately. My husband had a severe reaction to the seizure medication the neurologist put him on, so no more medication. He is having the EEG done Wednesday to find out what is going on. I have to confess that I have seriously considered smoking today, but haven't caved yet. Somebody give me a stern talking to here. What has kept me off of them is a very timely message our pastor did on temptation. He said temptation is a invitation and to throw that invitation out and that God is faithful and will give us the strength to withstand. But I am really tired of being slammed. Encouragement welcomed right now.

We're all so proud of you! Hang in there. And remember: if you can get through this without smoking, you can get through anything without smoking!

Nicotine just delays the inevitable: coping with your stress. Prayer is a much better coping mechanism! I'm praying for you right now!

Nicotine doesn't fix or improve anything. It only feeds and stengthens the nicotine addiction. The only way to keep it from taking over your life again is to starve it to death!
