The thing is when I visited my grandmother last Tuesday something told me that this might be the last time I'd see her.

Well, my mother is making the funneral plans and she is realizing how much there is to plan. It is beyond the obvious like casket and burial plot my grandmother had planned both of these before her death. It things like what kind of flowers, pallbarers, what to write on the the tombstone...Questions that need answers but due to obvious circumstances you don't feel like answering.

So she had at leas partial plans prearranged. I've heard two schools of thought on that one. One is that making all of the plans in advance takes a huge burden off of the bereaved family members. The other is that going through the planning stages after the fact is part of the healing process and even though difficult, is actually beneficial.

My parents said "just cremate us". I hope they were kind of joking. But it will only be up to me, my sister and my brother in law and well be able to agree (I hope). They have a will and everything set up, but the exact details will need to be determined like what kind of music, etc.

My grandpa was a navy vet (passed away about 15 years ago). They cremated him and my grandma kept his ashes until she passed away two years ago (also cremated). As per their wishes, they were buried at sea by the U.S.Navy. They sent us a DVD of the ceremony, and a flag. We had a memorial service for my grandma last summer. I think my parents want something similar.

So it was not a surprise. Therefore I believe healing process had begun. According to my parents they both want to be cremated. My father wants his ashes on some property that we have in Oregon, and my mother wants to be tossed into the ocean.

My brother had left oral instructions to both myself and my sister that he should be cremated. My mother was very upset with that idea, but I stuck up for his wishes and made sure they were followed.
