I think we need a babywearing thread so we can talk about one of my favorite things - slings!

What's your favorite carrier? What kind of slings do you have? Did you buy them or make them?

My favorite is the Kangarookorner fleece pouch (a tube sling). I've owned 3.

I didn't like the 1 ring sling I tried...too much adjustment.
I made a tie sling out of a sheet and it was fun.
I made another tube sling out of a mesh fabric I found at Walmart ($1/yd). I used that in the pool for a while.
I have an ergo. Those are great for toddlers.

I wanted to make a mei-tail for this last baby but no time.

I have a pouch sling that was made for me by Maggie. It is great. We didn't really get the hang of it when she was super small but now she seems to like it. Most often we use a kangaroo position which allows her to face out (which she really likes). We also do tummy to tummy with her legs on either side of me from time to time. She still doesn't like to be cradled while in the sling so I've never been able to nurse her using it. THIS page has pictures of a sling like the one we have. Although I think he would like it if he'd try it, I've never been able to convince Chris to wear the sling!

I bought a sling from a woman here in Toronto. Akeelah doesn't like it yet though so I haven't really used it. I think once she is older though she will like it (I hope so, since I spent all that money on it!!!)

I have a new native sling that we used with Nadia when she was a newborn and an infant till about 6 mo's (hubby used it longer as it fit better on him with Nadia, I had too much padding). I also made a mei tai carrier. Which is wonderful! I can still use it. Even at 18 mo's. Although I think she likes walking much better now. But she will sit quietly (the most quiet I've ever seen her) with the front hold. I think she likes being so close to me. I like it because I can give her these little hugs whenever I want to.

My favorite out of the carriers I have is my Ergo! I love my Ergo!!! Hannah loves riding in it, she is big enough now to do a back carry, which is a lot of fun! She likes being on both the front and the back. I think she likes that it's not so confining. She has both her arms and feet free, and she's sitting upright. I love that it's sturdy, rugged, puts all the weight on my hips so that my back and shoulders never hurt, and it's great for anything from grocery shopping to hiking.
I have three other carriers, but Hannah doesn't like them. I thought about selling them, but I think I'm going to keep them in case one of my next babies likes them. I have a Maya Pouch - I thought I would really like it, but it does hurt my shoulder. Plus, I have a largish chest, and it seems like Hannah gets smooshed and is uncomfortable because of that. I also have a Moby Wrap, which she liked okay at first, but started to really hate being tied up. She squirms and kicks, and starts crying if I try to put her in it. I also don't like how it takes a bit of time to tie around me. The last one I have is a woven wrap that I made myself. She doesn't like this one for the same reasons that she doesn't like the Moby. Hopefully I can get some use out of them with future children.

I wear Ellie a lot. It really helps my bad neck and arms. Plus, she loves it too. She doesn't really mind how I carry/wear her (as long as she's not in the cradle hold); she just wants to be close to me!

I heard about Maya Wraps when I was pregnant and I saw someone in my Bradley class use one. It looked pretty neat, so I showed my mom. She bought me one the night I had Ellie (she surprised us and was almost a month early). I had a hard time figuring it out though.[&o] About a month after Ellie was born, I got a Mamma's Milk pouch and I loved it! It was so easy to pop her in and out of it, and it fit in my diaper bag. We used it all the time. Then Ellie got a little bigger and I had a harder time getting comfortable with her in it. I realized it was too big since I had lost most of my pregnancy weight. Plus having all her weight on one shoulder got to be a little uncomfortable. A friend gave me a homemade mei tai, which I love too. I'm not crazy about the pattern of mine, but it is very comfy. I'd like to make a prettier one some day. Then I heard about Moby Wraps, and a friend in LLL mentioned how wonderful they were, and hubby surprised me with one for our anniversary. The Moby is awesome! Sometimes I forget I'm even wearing Ellie. For Christmas I got an Ergo, and it's great too. I can put Ellie on my back by myself (which she loves) and I can wear her all day and still be comfortable. I'd also like a non-stretchy wrap that I can use to put Ellie on my back. So obviously, I'm a sling addict! The crazy thing is I still use all my slings, even the ring sling (now that I know how to use it!). I keep thinking I'm going to sell a couple of them, but I haven't done it yet!

I'm actually a leader of a Babywearing group in my area. It's called NINO. You should all see if there's one where you live!!!!!!

I have several different things ........

A wrap - it's a german woven wrap called a Storch Leo red. I love it!!!!!!
A ring sling - this one is actually also a wrap, but I use it as a RS .... it's pretty easy to turn any piece of fabric into a RS without sewing!!!!!!!
A mei tai - mine is called a Napsack - - I love it because it has wide straps like a wrap and they're very supportive and more comfy than other ones I've had.
A Peanut Shell pouch - We used this a lot when Luke was tiny. Now I prefer the RS because I can adjust it more.

You should all check out TheBabyWearer. There are reviews of carriers and vendors, forums, so much stuff!!!!!

I'm really glad I'm not a kangaroo.[8D] Although there are days I feel like that momma primate![8|]

I had a one ring sling with Hannah and used it a bit around the house, but could never get it really comfortable. I think the one shoulder thing is too much for my back and neck to take.

i love my moby wrap....love love love it!!!!!
jack is getting a little too big for his favorite hold (as I found out yesterday), so we are having to find other ways to tie it and hold him. He loves it...as soon as he sees us put it on he smiles and laughs...he goes to sleep in it immediately.
emma loves it too...i can easily put both of them in it and it eases the back pain of having to support both of their weights.

I actually went to a NINO meeting last week for the first time! It was fun, but quite a drive, so I probably won't go back unless I need help with a sling. I'm thinking about starting a babywearing class and advertising it at our local pregnancy center. Do you guys think that's a good idea? I've been praying about it. God needs to do something good with my sling addiction!

Sherry, there are two websites I really have to be careful with-diaperswappers and thebabywearer. I just get carried away...

I'm glad Kristin liked the sling I made. [:D] Gebre also liked the outward-facing position. He was so fat he always looked like a little Buddha folded up in there. [&o]

I like my Frankenkozy and can't wait to start using it again. I'm working on another one with a few tweaks--the first one I made was just an awful lot of fabric and a bit awkward. This one will be less bulky, kind of like a mei-tai with extra wide straps. I inherited some neat, heavy upholstery fabric that i'm using for the outer body and I'm using coordinating fabric for the straps. It's very "earthy" looking.

Shannon ~ I think the class is a great idea. There's a subforum at TBW called something Teaching and Advocacy. You might find some good info there. Just stay out of FSOT!!!!!

Bumping this thread...

I used my Moby wrap for the first time in Walmart the other day (after practicing a tiny bit at home). LOVE IT!!! I'm looking forward to using it lots when we go on walks, to the zoo, and on our trip to Mississippi.

My sister, who doesn't have any kids yet, wants to wear Levi next week when we go shopping. She also already informed me that I am buying her a Moby when she has a baby.[:)]

I'm also having my sister make a simple pouch sling for Hannah to carry her dollies around in.[:D]

Quick question to ladies who make slings, what kind of fabric do you use? Where do you get good patterns? I don't sew, but I REALLY want a sling that I can use when Samuel is an infant (I have a metai that I LOVE!) I'm thinking of asking my mom to help me, she's great at sewing, but has never made a sling before.

Also, any hidden tips or things to look out for? Bits of widsom, etc...

My oldest hated to be worn, he was a go go go baby, anything even slightly confining or that limited his view was out! I didn't have a sling until I got the metai with Tyson, and that was at about 10 mos, so I couldn't use it very long, but we loved it. I am totally going to wearing this new baby all the time! With two toddlers there is no way I am carrying around a car seat, or etc... I'm really excited about it! Well, if I can get my sling, and it works. Can't really afford to pay for them, you know? If mom can't do it...oh well, one thing at a time![;)]

Why couldn't you use your mei tai very long? I thought you could use those with toddlers for a while. The baby can sit up and see very well. I don't like mei tais very much, but I'm not sure why. They seem to hurt my neck more than most slings, but I'm probably not using them correctly. Most people love them. I'm hoping to make a non-stretchy wrap soon. I just need a little help picking out out the fabric since I know NOTHING about material or sewing.

I've made mine out of regular old poly-cotton, and out of old sheets. I have one for this new baby that's made out of a huge, long cotton scarf. It's very thin, so it won't hold him long, but will be perfect for summer. The newest frankenkozy I made uses heavy upholstery fabric on the outside (for decoration [:D]) and then some $1/yard fabric from walmart.

I do remember seeing neat wrap carrier that involves no sewing--does mamatoto have that one?

One of our neighbors has 2 daughters who are 13 months apart. When she goes somewhere with both of them, she wears the younger one in a Moby(she is about 5 months) and carries the other one. She says that she really likes the wrap, and it looks like it makes it so much easier for her--she can get out by herself with both of them.

donna...with our kids we took old, unused scarves and tied them around them to make a "wrap" for their babies...they loved that better then the backpack type carriers that come with doll stuff. The easiest way to make a cheap one (if you don't have any scarves) is to find fleece (does not neet to be hemmed or bound on the edges) material and have them cut 1/4 yard (1/2 if you know it will need to be wider to accommodate a bigger doll). Just make sure they cut it straight...some in-experienced people will cut it crooked and getting anything less then 1/2 yard shows it. Then you can tie it around them and they can wear a wrap too!!!! My kids like being just like me, so that worked great.

Shannon...what kind did you have? (homemade or bought). Was it the way it sat on your shoulders that hurt you? I don't want to make one and then hate it and I plan on making me one very soon (like this next week if possible) since the movers packed up my moby wrap and we are now stuck with the backpack carrier and I HATE it.

on making them...to find a pattern I liked for the Maitei that I will make (hopefully) I just googled "free meitai carrier patterns" and came up with a whole bunch of free patterns. I looked through them all and found the one I liked the best and that had the best directions.

I was just thinking about slings/carriers today... We drove to another town about an hour away to go to a maternity store there (we only have one *very* overpriced one where we live) and they had wraps!!! I have been reading everything I can find about baby wearing and the different types of carriers and I have decided that when she it first born I really really want a wrap, the only ones I have been able to find have been online but today in that store I got to try one on!! I was so excited!![:D] I pretty much have the moby wrap website memorized because I'm so excited about it... I sure can't wait for our little blessing to get here so I can try wearing her!!!!!!

I just got a Mei Tai and I love it. It is so easy to tie and Helen enjoys it too. I also like being able to put her on my back if I want...that's a great feature. I'm a little bit sling-impaired, I've never been able to figure out ring slings and such. So, the mei tai seems like a great option.

so there are TWO threads for wraps/slings???? AHHHHHHHH this could get VERY confusing!!!!!!!!!!

I am planning on making two Meitai's hopefully next week. I saw some material at walmart today that I want to go back and look at on monday (when they won't be so busy).

I can't find a picture of mine online anymore, I think it was discontinued or something. I'm sure glad I got it when I did! I think the brand is Leach or something like that. I LOVE it because it goes over BOTH shoulders. It goes on kinda like a shirt and it has drawstrings on the top and bottom. I tried my friend's one-shoulder wrap one day and after just a little while my shoulder was killing me. I don't know how you mommies do those. I wish I could find a pic of my sling! I use it all the time for Isabel, it's much easier to be hands free when you have another toddler! [:D]
