This is my first time to post.
I enjoy reading, watching old movies, going on trips.
The Lord has really blessed me.
I have a house, my health, friends and family.

What do you enjoy doing?: I enjoy cooking and entertaining, reading, going to plays, traveling and spending time with my family.
Tell us a little about yourself: I am mother of 3 kids, grandmother of 1. I was a youth counselor at my home church currently visiting church. I work in health administration. I love being outside on beautiful spring days.

Hi. My name is Susan and I live in the metro Atlanta area. I just found this forum today and am looking forward to taking time to look it over and to get to know y'all. I didn't notice there was a thread just for intros - sorry for posting in the wrong place to begin with.
I've lived here all my life, except for a brief stint in NC about 14 years ago. I enjoy crocheting, reading, making soap, cross stitching, quilting, canning, scrapbooking, etc. Within the last year I've gotten around to finally planting things and making my yard "purdy". I have 2 kids: one is 6 and the other is 17 (no longer at home though).
I am a member of a community orchestra, as well as playing in my church's orchestra. I also work the music library at my church and am one of the group leaders in our singles dept. Well, I'm not sure what else to say so I reckon that'll be it.

I play clarinet and I'm learning the oboe. I actually have a flute too but haven't learned to play it. Maybe one day. I'd love to learn the bassoon too - it has such a neat sound.

It's kinda weird playing on a double reed. And I haven't gotten the fingerings nailed down just yet cuz every once in a while I'll throw in a clarinet fingering. That just doesn't work real well. LOL

Flute, oboe, saxophone are pretty similar. Flute and saxophone are almost exactly alike. Oboe not so much. Bassoon has a bunch of thumb keys. Clarinet is similar, but due to length is a 12th apart from one register to another--a tad confusing.
The reason woodwinds are so similar is that they all were designed by or redesigned by Boehm, who thought up the amazingly simple idea of having one finger raise for each higher pitch.

The current game thread is kinda fun, too. Ask the guys questions about guy things...like why did guys invent the comb-over.

How long have you been playing?
I don't know about fingerings between flute/oboe. There was a girl in high school that played flute and switched to oboe. (We had tons of flutes - and clarinets for that matter.)
I guess I've been playing for about 26 years or so. There was a lull after high school when I didn't play it much but would drag it out when I felt like it. Later, I joined a community orchestra and was with that group for a couple of years, until the conductor resigned and the group went ka-put. I've been with this last community orchestra for about 9 seasons now. In the early part of 2004 we found out that we were awarded the Sudler Silver Scroll Award, the highest award for a community orchestra in North America, by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. At about the same time of learning about the award, we were invited to play Carnegie Hall.
I love music! It's always been a passion of mine. My mom showed me the notes on the piano when I was in 2nd grade and that's really what ignited the passion.

I read a few of the postings of that thread - I was wondering what it was. I did read about the combover. I don't get it either. I guess they want to preserve what little bit of hair they have up there. LOL I used to tease my dad. He doesn't do a true combover (parting it at the ear), but he does have a handful of hairs that he combs to the side. When he used to sing in the choir I'd ask him not to sit directly under the lights unless I had my sunglasses in tow. Oh well.
