We don't have Cracker Barrel out here. I've never eaten at one. I feel deprived

The other cool thing about going there in the winter is they had a big ole fireplace going and you could here the crackle of the fire and all. Oh, and ours during good weather, had a line of rockers out front.

Yum!!! Someday I'll have the chance to do so again...

Out here in California, places like Panera Bread and Spicy Pickle are normal. Panera Bread is really yummy, but you can find equally good food in that style in many places. Good Southern cooking is hard to find out here, and that type of food is out of the ordinary to me, so I really, really like it. It's special!

We have Panera bread in abundance in the south, and we like them. I've never heard of Spicy Pickle. I want to find a Cheesecake Factory.

ORIGINAL: Kerrlaw1 Cracker Barrel must be a southern thing, mostly country cooking. I've noticed that the more northern Cracker Barrel's aren't as good as the more southern ones. Probably harder to get cooks who really understand butter and pork fat. Mrs. K is a Maine yankee, and I have to grit my teeth when she orders brown gravy for her biscuits. Well the one that I ate at was in Colorado Springs.

Cheesecake Factory is really good! A little pricey, if your order dessert too, but why go there and not get cheesecake?? I really don't like most southern food. It's too greasy and seems like everything has a sauce or a gravy.

Cheesecake Factory is pretty good :) Sausage gravies are so yucky at most restaurants here. Nobody seems to know how to make a really good one. I found a recipe for sausage gravy that I've made for a potluck at work, and a coworker from Arkansas said it was one of the best sausage gravies she'd ever had. I figure if someone who grew up in the South said that, it must be good, so here's the recipe: Sausage Gravy 1/2 lb pork sausage 2 tbs butter 2 cups half and half 1 tsp black pepper 1/2 tsp sage 4 tbs flour 1 tsp salt Brown the sausage, leave in pan, add the butter, seasonings, and the flour. Mix until flour is absorbed into drippings. Slowly add the half and half and simmer for 10 minutes.

A great show on Food Network that features Southern cooking is Down Home with the Neelys. I love that show, the interaction between Gina and Pat (I think that's his name) is great - they're such a cute married couple! - and the recipes look awesome too. On the show I saw yesterday they made deep fried devil's eggs I've shared a recipe for macaroni and cheese from their show on my blog...someday I'm going to make it!

So ok, kinda reminds me of an old Brady Bunch episode where the kids did the laundry and put too much soap in the washing machine.
