Here's the deal:
I have a washer that runs fine, but it's 7 years old and the top metal edge is rusting, leaving rust stains (practically impossible to remove) on our clothes.
My dad says I must get a new washer.
I don't want to pay for a new washer if this one is working fine.
Does anyone know of a way to fix the rust problem?

Do you mean the top metal edge of the tub?
If this is the case, the only way to fix it is to remove the tub from the washer and sand the rust off and recoat the tub. I don't think you can use ordinary paint on the tub.
The cost would be close to a new machine.

Especially when you add in the labor to do it.

The tub itself is actually fine. This is the metal edge of the outside casing. It doesn't actually have anything to do with the washing of the clothes...

I kinda wondered about sanding it in place and putting some of that plastic paint that you put on the racks of dishwashers on it to make it last longer.
Taking it OFF the machine actually makes more sense.
Do you think that dishwasher paint stuff would work?

I have no experience with the "dishwasher" paint so I am not sure how well it would adhere to metal. If it is used on the racks I am not sure how or if it would adhere to metal. An automotive type paint may work better it would adhere to the metal and also withstand water. Your best bet may be to talk to someone at a paint store. Another case where you would want to skip the national home improvment chains and talk to someone in a specialty paint store.

My lawnmower won't start, and my grass is a foot high!
My brother-in-law keeps saying he'll stop by and take a look at it, but he doesn't seem to be in any hurry, and doesn't seem to understand what an eyesore my yard is!
First, i couldn't pull the rope ... now I can (thanks to the addition of a little oil) but still can't get the thing to start. I have even changed the gas in the mower. Nothing is working.
Should I attempt to install the spark plug myself? I'm afraid I'll break something!

You need a spark plug wrench to take the plug off. You can get one at the hardware store. The air filter probably needs to be cleaned if not replace. They are made of foam rubber and can also be found at the hardware store. You will need to take the old one with you because they come in different shapes.

The housing on the front of the mower is damaged. I can't even see the whole filter, let alone figure out how to get the thing off.
Too complicated for my blood. Maybe I can find one to borrow ...

Have you tried priming it? (I think that's the term) There may be a little primer that you can push to bring the gas up, especially after it has sat for a while. I always had problems with my mower every Spring.

Depending on the brand you may be able to use a standard wrench for the spark plug I know the last couple I have used have had the spark plugs sticking far enough out of the engine to get it with a wrench or pliers.

Perhaps you're right, Trainfan, but if the racks on the dishwasher are rusting and that's why you want to put the paint on them, then the paint would have to adhere to metal, wouldn't it?
Anyway, as I said, when finals are over and I have time to deal with this, I will update the thread on the success or failure of the idea!

I was not aware the racks were metal inside (never took one apart to find out). Then yes you would be correct about that paint. As I said I am not familar with that paint is it like the coating that is already on the rack? If it is I would be kind of worried about how it would go on, it may not spread easily with a brush.

Thanks Gary that is exactly what I was wondering. I have very hard water and the water that goes to the cooler does not go through the softener first. Do you think hard water could cause a blockage? I don't want to ruin my (fairly new) roof.
