I don't think there should be a dress code or jewelry code for church.
I have a friend in a church with a dress code and no jewelry is allowed. Wedding rings are debatable, but certainly no earrings for males or females.
I get impatient with man made rules.
One thing I have recently learned about piercing is the prevalence of nickel allergies.
My daughter is allergic to nickel and her belt buckle and the snap on her jeans gives her hives.
She can't wear jewelry (she tells people she is allergic to cheap jewelry)
In researching nickel allergies most medical sites say they think that many nickel allergies develop either from a piercing with nickel in it or even the needle or gun used to make the piercing.

I would say "What's your style?' and stay true to that while being aware of the culture and norms around you. If you lean toward a conservative background a simple diamond stud is very attractive and eye-catching. If you are a bit of a rebel and an individual, find something that suits you. Just know that what you wear expresses an unspoken message to others about who your are.

You can't expect people to submit to your leadership, if they are honestly offended about pierced ears on men. Rightly or wrongly, my own grandmother would be very, very upset to see that.

It's hurtful to be on the receiving end of something that feels unfair, but this is genuinely UPSETTING to people. I can hear my own grandma now "Pierced ears are for WOMEN -- he's a MAN!" And get more and more agitated and worked up.

Leadership still has to present itself in a very conservative manner, to earn respect and to be effective. Casual environments like the one you describe, Doer, are the exception and not the rule, and the membership has much more in common with each other. But most churches have people like my grandma, and these people need and deserve leadership they can respect. They need their pastors to be clean-shaven, with a conservative, short haricut, and to wear a suit, dress shirt, and tie. It's loving and wise for our OP to want to LEAD by, well, LEADING!

I think that there is a need for education for people who make judgements based on appearance. Perhaps if they are old, then it is difficult to remove cultural indoctrination - but we need to be clear that this is cultural indoctrination - that is all - and it is very wrong to dress up cultural prejudice as biblical truth.

I don't agree about leadership presenting themselves as conservative. It is fine for them to do so, but in many cultures leadership gains respect by being different to conservative in appearance. Especially outside the traditional church, perhaps in new church plants in inner city areas. In those sorts of situation it is the reverse - the conservatively dressed person does not get respect (and this is just as wrong as judging for not being conservatively dressed).

I believe strongly that we need to get to the position that Christians do not make judgements at all about each other based on what they look like or wear.

I think men (or boys rather around my age, ha! ha!) with pierced ears are cute. It gives that bad-boy look with out the bad-boy attitude. I am totally up for u pierce it.

PS: Plus it shows your individuality

Agreed. It's kinda artsy too!

Just make sure you pierce either your left ear only or both ears. Piercing your right ear only is a symbol for being gay

2 gets to be too girly...
If a guy is decidedly going to pierce his ear(s), IMO, I'd suggest just doing the left.
And pleassee don't get the big blingy bling earrings... a simple small hoop is attractive.

humbleinspirit:

But surely it DOES show a bit of (artsy) individuality for a guy to have a pierced ear??

Surely it does?

Hi faroukfarouk, I meant it being both masculine and having 2 pierced ears also.

20 - 25 years ago men and boys who had it done would often get one ear done.

Now the custom is often for them do have both done: it is very widespread and not unusual, right?

(So I guess a parent who takes a teen son for ear piercing can let him get both ears done secure in the knowledge that it won't look at all unusual on a boy and he is likely to fit in style-wise with various of his friends who may also have both done.)

But if you prefer 1 earring only, fine as well.

My girl friend seems to think that if I had a tatoo before getting saved its ok. But, any tatoo's I get after being saved is against GOD.
Where does it state in the bible that tatoo's are bad?

I also recently just got an earing, and she thinks this is also against GOD.
Where does it state in the bible that earings/piercings are bad?

Her statement backing up her reasoning/beliefs are as follows:
- Clothes yourself with the armor of GOD
- Earings were made for women to enhance their beauty (this is supposedly in the bible)
- The bible states clothing that pertains to men, and clothing that pertains to women, and that we are not to interchange it.
- Isaiah 3:13-16, it talks about jewelry, nose rings, and other piercings.
- Leviticus 19:28, speaks of tatoo's and defying the lords temple

I dont wear the earing or tatoo for anyone else. But rather, I wear it because I like it. No different than me liking to wear clothes with ties or not, etc... All I want to understand, and get better details is to whether tatoo's and specifically earings/piercings for a guy are against GOD, per his word. Dont care about whether its accepted in the workplace, in society, etc...

Thanks in advance,

jcd

Earrings is a culteral thing. As long as you are not getting an earring to "look like a girl" I do not think that there is a problem with it per say.

As with so many things, it's partly a question of conscience, as enlightened by Scripture.

You and she might also like to remember that in Ps. 40, "Mine ears hast thou opened", the Hebrew for 'opened' = digged, i.e., pierced. The reference is to the Old Testament bondservant who, when offered his liberty, chooses to use it in permanent, willing service for his master.

Take care.

I would not wear earrings. Men need to start being and acting like men.

Okay if that's how you feel. But men in the Bible had pierced ears sometimes; it was even commanded in certain circumstances; I thus can' see that it's wrong in itself.

No-one needs to who doesn't want to, of course.

Wasn't that only when men decided to remain with their masters for life after they had completed servitude, thus publically identifying oneself as a permanent slave?
