OK, I'll try to help revive the thread! I've been on the pill for the whole 17 years of my marriage. I've talked it over with DH, and at my next physical in January, I'm going to talk to my doctor about a tubal or Essure. I'm 41, and with my family cardiac and stroke history I don't want to be on the pill forever. Besides, we're traveling more often and farther, and I'm getting really tired of the time zone calculations! And, I identify FAR too much with that NuvaRing ad with the synchronized swimmers ("Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Every Day......sigh.")

Ok, so birth control....here we come! I'm trying to decide between: 1. Mini-pill 2. Depo shot We only have to prevent for approx 6-7 months to worry about it. Then Ray will be off to Iraq and it won't be necessary anymore.

Have you done Depo before? I know some women have horrible side effects, and unfortunately once you take the Depo shot, that's it. If you have side effects, you may be stuck with them for months until it clears your system. That's what knocked Depo out of contention for me.

When I was contemplating Depo my ob/gyn had me try the mini-pill for a couple months to make sure it worked for my system. It didn't.

Well, I am breastfeeding for now. Not sure how long it is gonna last after last night though. Honestly, I just like the simplicity of Depo. I'm not good at taking pills at the same time, every day. My schedule is not that organized.

No hormones is the main plus for me; the Pill just made me premenstrual the whole month long. It wasn't till I came off it that I realised what effect it had been having on my mind (let alone my body!)

I'm glad it's him getting the vascectomy instead of you getting your tubes tied. I, personallly, think that is the fair way when the woman already goes through the pregnancies/deliveries. ______________________ Sideways, did Greg have just the one brother, or were there more?

We thought about condoms too....but I honestly can see us getting lazy with it and not using one at some point. I wish the BC issue were an easier one!

But the Pill does not protect 100% against pregnancy either, so are you prepared for possibly conceiving again during this 6-7 months (and that would honestly not be advisable after a C-section)? If not, then I'd suggest using a condom as well as whatever hormonal BC you choose just to be on the safe side.

I'm not good at taking pills at the same time, every day. My schedule is not that organized. As someone pointed out....be aware that Depo has some really bad side effects. I went on it after the birth of my second child....it worked at preventing pregnancy because I was on my period for 6 months minus 6 weeks (3 out of 4 weeks of the month were bleeding).....(that was only two shots worth!)...they kept telling me that the bleeding would clear up. It did...about 6 weeks AFTER my last shot. It also causes bone tissue loss, especially in women over 25....it can bring early onset osteoporosis. I am not a huge fan of the mini-pill..but that is personal. Just make sure you KNOW what you might be getting yourself into with depo...it is not always as simple as they make it sound.

ORIGINAL: _Cinderella_ My period seemes quite late at this point. I took a test today and it came out negative. But I always wonder if I am holding the stick in the proper position. Kind of hard to watch ones own urine output if one is not a man. you can always buy disposable cups and pee in a cup instead.....then dip the stick into it. Pour the urine and trash the cup.

Has anyone here every decided to stop having children primarily for mental health reasons? I did not have PPD (that I know of), but one reason my husband wants a vasectomy is that he doesn't think I could mentally handle a third child. He's fine with 2, and he sees no reason to "push me over the edge". I have seen a counselor for issues in the past, but my struggles are never going to go away, they are just manageable. Honestly, I think he's right. A 3rd would just be to much for me, as wonderful and helpful as my dH is, a new baby would just be the wrong call for us. I've prayed about it, and I think God wants us to stop where we're at. Our family feels complete.

I do not believe I could have coped with more than two, Ruth, for both mental and physical health reasons. For us a vasectomy wasn't something we even thought of though - we just made/make sure we prevented. I personally wouldn't want to trust a vasectomy to prevent completely anyway, as it is possible for it to "fail", and think another method might be needed as well.

Sure, but if someone was wanting to lessen the rate as much as possible, then using something as well as a vasectomy would IMO be wise, especially during fertile times.

A vasectomy has a lesser fail rate then condoms, especially if the man does the proper follow ups and has his sperm count checked like he is supposed to do

Of course it does. My point was that if someone wanted to lessen the risk even more after a vasectomy, it would be wise to use a condom at the woman's fertile time.
