Status: offline 		I can't imagine why it wouldn't work, Tammy, although I certainly don't have any advice

Does anyone know how I can figure out whether or not the city's diaper service is cheaper/more expensive than washing them at home? If anyone has a great website that helps you figure that out, I'd appreciate it greatly!

Status: offline 		I'm thinking that I'm not going to be able to dump everything in without making a mess. Especially with having a wet diaper pail. With the top loader I could literally just turn the entire pail upside down. That wouldn't work with the front loader - it'd be at an angle. maybe a dry one would work better.

I might have to test it out with some clean towels or something.

Status: offline 		Tammy you could always just switch to using a dry pail. I use a dry pail and we have absolutely no smell or anything and my laundry room is almost in my kitchen. I have heard (I think from WOF??) that a dry pail is better anyway so I'm sure it wouldn't hurt.

Kim I think DiaperPin.com (or something like that, I think it is linked in the Women's Only link thread) has a converter, but you will probably have to sit down with your utility bills and what not to figure it out. Don't forget to factor in convenience though, having dirty diapers taken away and fresh ones delivered would be terrible handy!!

Status: offline 		LOL - I know!! The diaper service is $15/week, which isn't that much, but adds up ($780 a year)!!! Thanks for the link idea, though. I know I've just got to sit down and do it ... I'm just lazy

Status: offline 		Yeah, a dry diaper pail would probably work. I think I should be able to shake everything into the washer from the pail without dumping any of the goods. I hope so anyway! I think I'll still do a test run with clean stuff to make sure.

yes....start the washer load with them in there...run the water and put in the vinegar..then let them agitate for a few minutes then before it drains I turn it off and let them soak for a while (30 minutes to sometimes overnight). Then I turn in back on later, drain it, and restart it this time with soap and vinegar. Of course I don't have a front loader so I am not sure about if you can do that with them.

I *think* I've figured out how many litres a regular washer uses, but in order to compare, I need to know how much my washer would use PER diaper ... therefore I need to know how many diapers per load! LOL

I just know in my washer, I can wash all of our diapers and inserts in one load and still have plenty of room (it fills it about 3/4 full). We have about 22 diapers.
How many large bath size towels can you fit in your washer at once?

or jeans. I was just trying to get a good idea of the size of your machine.

If you have hand towels and wash cloths, put them in there dry and see how many you can get in there...then count. Each hand towel as one and each two washcloths as one. That will give you a good guess.

Status: offline 		Great idea!! We can fit A LOT in our machine - more than we could in the front-loaders at our apartment building. It's got an "extra-large" water setting!

Status: offline 		more then likely then you will have no problem fitting what you need in there with cloth diapers. My moms machine is HUGE....it's about twice the size of mine...and mine is pretty big too since we have a large family. Hers though is much lower then mine is and I can't reach the bottom of the tub when I am pregnant...mine I can reach just fine....lol. My mom can easily fit about 12 or more bath towels in one load without overloading it...mine the max is about 7-8

Status: offline 		Oh, I'm not concerned about being able to do enough - I know for sure I'd be able to fit an ample amount in!! I'm trying to figure out how many I can do per load to figure out how much water it would use per diaper compared to the local diaper service.

Don't forget to count into your figuring the added "mental" stress of running out of diapers in the middle of the night and your being able to wash them when you need to even after hours....lol. I personally wouldn't use a diaper service, but that's just me. The ones I have priced were about twice what my doing it myself would cost, and I like the diapers we use...not so keen on the prefolds.

YAY!!!!! Are they pocket diapers? Ours are pocket diapers and honestly we don't put the insert in the pocket area...too much trouble to fish it out (and I do NOT like messing with a dirty or wet diaper)...so we just fold it and lay it in the diaper against the baby's skin. Works for us!!!

Yes, they are pocket diapers, and what you wrote totally answers a question I was struggling with.

I was a bit disappointed when I saw them because I had imagined that the "insert" would lie against the baby's skin, and therefore would be the part that would need to be washed after every change. I thought that the nappy cover could be used several times before it needed to be washed. I did not realise that according to the manufacturer's recommended method, the insert is tucked into the nappy and therefore the WHOLE nappy needs to be changed every time the baby soils it.

I was wondering whether I couldn't just put the insert on top of the nappy and against the baby's skin, or use old-fashioned prefolds instead of the specially made inserts.

You seem to have found a way for it to work with the insert outside the pocket, so that's really encouraging!

Status: online 		any of you girls use pre-folds? I'm thinking about getting some. I like my dipes and all, but I think I would like to give prefolds a whirl too. I would have to wash less often for one, and I could have more dipes.
