usually about 3 to 6 layers. I often would take the really small prefolds and just fold the sides in on them to make doublers...but you can make them really easy too....just about 3 to 6 layers of flannel works...and you can actually take 4 layers of flannel and sandwich a terry cloth washrag in there (cut in half of course) and it makes a really nice thin, but efficient doubler.

You can also fold your prefolds with the ends/wings over the center-thick area and use that as a doubler.

I use flat diapers as well as prefolds...I like the flat ones especially when the babies are newborns because they can be folded down to fit them properly without a lot of bulk.
My hubby even learned to fold them!
A real advantage to the flat diapers is that they dry MUCH MUCH faster than any others...whether you use the dryer or the clothesline!
just be sure whatever type of cloth diaper you use, to NEVER NEVER use any softener of any kind (dryer sheet or otherwise)..as the softener "clogs" the fibers and makes them less absorbent!

Wow - thanks for all the info, ladies!!
I went through the box that was dropped off for me today and oh. my. goodness. It was FULL of doublers, inserts, fitteds, contours, and a few AIOs. I am flabbergasted and a bit overwhelmed. Thankfully, she's completely DONE with them, so she said whatever we don't want to give to Bibles for Missions or pass on to others ... but I have NO IDEA what to keep, what we'll like using, what I won't touch. There's just so much!  I guess it's good to be overwhelmed by an excess than be wanting at this stage. Many of them aren't suitable for newborn sizes anyways, so I figure I'll keep it all until June Bug's in a bigger size and see if they work for us then. I'm going to have to go through and count it all up!

I will mostly be using fitted diapers and fleece covers made by WAHMs. I prefer to support WAHMs instead of the bigger companies and the diapers seem to be better quality. I do have some BumGenius AIOs and some thirsties covers that seem nice, but I love my WAHM made dipers.

I remember cloth diapers when my boys were little.
I believe they are better over all, but they do require extra work in laundering and if you don't have the diaper pail in a remote location, they can sure flavor the house.
I will acknowledge that paper diapers are easy to use, especially with the peel and stick tabs.
Do they have fitted cloth diapers with velcro yet? I don't have any grandchildren yet and am a little out of touch.

I heard something about disposable diapers possible causing infertility in males? You guys heard anything about that? Do you think there's truth to it, or just a scare tactic by the all-natural crowd? (Please nobody take that as a shot!)

I would doubt that. Men are constantly producing more sperm, unlike women who are born with all the eggs they will ever have. Men have had fertility issues from too much heat there, but I know it can resolve when they resolve the heat issue, so I doubt that diapers can cause that long term. It would be much more common and you would hear a lot more about it, I'm sure.

Actually...using the dry pail method prevents that 'flavoring' of the house that a lot of people remember. I kept my diaper pails in the bathrooms and I had people tell me they never knew I used cloth diapers because there wasn't the "smell". I always wondered what they meant until I went to a friend's house who did the wet pail method....while it wasn't strong..there was an odor to it that I didn't have at my house. I think also it depends on how often one washes them. I tend to use smaller pails so that every 2 to 3 days I have a load of diapers...so they never sit more than a couple of days. I also use a nylon (parachute type cloth actually) liner that just pops into the washer with the diapers when I do a load so I have a 'continually clean' diaper pail. I spray it with Lysol every time I wash diapers and about once a month scrub it out with borax or baking soda.

I have my doubts about that one. I KNOW that research has shown that for the most part cloth diapers reduce the risk of diaper rash and yeast infections in babies as well as skin allergy reactions, but I don't know about the infertility in males.
However, because I am who I am...I did a search on it and this link:Causes male infertility
and of course a link for the "other side"
I think the evidence is VERY inconclusive....at best.

This site has some really interesting info on the benefits of using cloth diapers.
This is what they say about cloth diapers and male infertility:

A teen did this science experiment with his younger sibling.
4 days in a row the afternoon temp reach almost 90*, each day he tried different diapering combos. Here are his results:
After 15 minutes outside, temp inside the diaper:
Disposables 102.5*
Fuzzi Bunz 101.5* (this is a pocket diaper with a PUL outter)
Fleece pocket 100*
fitted with fleece shorts 98.5
pinned prefold with fleece shorts 97*
fitted with wool shorts 96*
pinned prefold with wool shorts 95.5*
just a fitted 95*
just a pinned prefold 94*
I know this isn't the most scientific study, but it is interesting. I found this info on Diaper Swappers and the woman who posted said she got it from Diaper Pin.

I have a few fleece soakers we will be using and a few PUL covers to use over fitted diapers. We will also use some pockets and AIOs.
I am a little scared of wool because some of it is really expensive and you have to wash it a certain way and lanolize it and I'm just scared I would mess something up.
I got some REALLY cute custom made fleece soakers for $10 each. I hope to get some fleece shorties and longies (pants) too and if I was having a girl I would definitely buy some fleece skirties!!

The other thing to watch out for with wool is whether or not your baby could have an allergy to wool. I have, though neither of my parents did.

Most people, though, aren't allergic to wool ... they just get itchy with commercial wools because of the processing. Natural wools with all the good stuff are actually very soft.
Real allergies, however, I will of course watch out for!

I've washed up all of our newborn wool covers, and honestly it's easier than throwing a load of laundry in! HERE's a great video on how to lanolize. Washing, you just fill a sink with tepid water with some Eucalan, squish the water and wash in and let it soak 15 minutes. Let the sink drain, squeeze the excess out and roll between two towels!! I have to wash my compression hose every night, and this is the process I basically have to use, and it takes me all of 3 minutes at night to actually wash them - the only difference with the Eucalan is the soaking.

Reviving this to see how everyone is doing now that their babies are here!
I started cd'ing Gabby now that we have a w/d. I ordered a HH OS and it's ok, but it leaves a red line on her back. That one is pink, I also ordered a cow print one because it's SO adorable. Also got 2 Haute Pocket OS, and 4 BG 2.0 OS. Oh, and a medium size, new style FB. Hmm, 9 diapers. I am going to try those for a little while and decide what I like best, then order more.
