NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York officials say 8 students probably have swine flu, but they're unsure of strain type.

New York State Department of Health is coordinating with the Nassau and Suffolk County health departments on investigations of additional possible cases on Long Island.

In a conference held today, NYC Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden said eight of the nine students tested positive for 'probable swine flu.' The CDC will have results tommorrow to confirm.

It was released that the Queens High School will not be open Monday if the CDC confirms that the students have the swine flu.

A Democratic congresswoman's candid remarks in the House Judiciary Committee yesterday bolster the fears of Americans who are concerned they one day may be convicted of a "hate crime" for merely publicly expressing their opposition to homosexuality.

The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act was reported out of the Judiciary Committee yesterday in the House (see earlier story). The bill, which is expected to face a vote in the full House on Wednesday, would add gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and disability to the list of protected categories under federal hate crimes law.

Proponents of the hate crimes bill claim that Christians and others who speak out publicly against homosexuality are not threatened with the same type of prosecution that criminals would face for committing acts of violence against homosexuals and transgender people.

Now those who were involved in providing that protection – with the full knowledge of top legislators, some who are now whining about how horrible the interrogations were – might be prosecuted for doing their best to keep America safe from future attack.

I received this report of the contents of books in the Neale Walsch series "Conversations with God" from one of my e-mail correspondents. (Reportedly, Walsch's work is one of Oprah Winfrey's particular favorites.) I was struck by the self-evident contradiction that has Walsch's god saying, "There is no such thing as right or wrong" in one breath, and "this is wrong" in the next. Obviously Walsh's god has no problem applying a concept while declaring that it doesn't exist.

I'd be tempted to think Walsch meant this as a joke, but this kind of silliness is typical of the shallow nonsense that passes for spirituality with the Oprah/Obama set. Mere mortals such as I have a hard time understanding how it's possible to recognize something as wrong when there's no such thing as right or wrong. Like eating a cake that's no longer there, it's a trick that can apparently be mastered only by the glamorous few.

The nation's largest left-wing newspaper and the bible for network news producers and bookers may be going under. This week, The New York Times announced more staggering losses: nearly $75 million dollars in the first quarter alone. The New York Post is reporting that the Times Company owes more than $1 billion and has just $34 million in the bank. A few months ago, the company borrowed $250 million from Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim at a reported 14 percent interest rate. With things going south fast, pardon the pun, Slim might want to put in a call to Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr.

The spin from Sulzberger is that the Internet is strangling the newspaper industry, and there is some truth to that. Why read an ideologically crazed paper when you can acquire a variety of information on your computer? But other papers are not suffering nearly as much as the Times, so there must be more to it.

There is no question that the Times has journalistic talent. This week the paper won five Pulitzers. It's true that the Pulitzer people favor left-wing operations (the past eight Pulitzer Prizes for commentary have gone to liberal writers), but New York Times journalists often do good reporting.

A quarter of the stockpile is being released around the country in places where swine flu has been located or may be expected to spread, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a briefing at the White House. The U.S. stockpile is currently 50 million doses.

Travel advisories have not been issued by the State Department, Napolitano said, nor is the United States going to screen passengers on flights arriving from Mexico. She said funds have been freed up in case a larger response is needed.

President Obama's media cheerleaders are hailing how loved he is. But at the 100-day mark of his presidency, Mr. Obama is the second-least-popular president in 40 years.

According to Gallup's April survey, Americans have a lower approval of Mr. Obama at this point than all but one president since Gallup began tracking this in 1969. The only new president less popular was Bill Clinton, who got off to a notoriously bad start after trying to force homosexuals on the military and a federal raid in Waco, Texas, that killed 86. Mr. Obama's current approval rating of 56 percent is only one tick higher than the 55-percent approval Mr. Clinton had during those crises.

As the attached chart shows, five presidents rated higher than Mr. Obama after 100 days in office. Ronald Reagan topped the charts in April 1981 with 67 percent approval. Following the Gipper, in order of popularity, were: Jimmy Carter with 63 percent in 1977; George W. Bush with 62 percent in 2001; Richard Nixon with 61 percent in 1969; and George H.W. Bush with 58 percent in 1989.

Every year, thousands of Americans aspire to receive higher education from their respective state¡¯s public schooling system. Unfortunately, their finances cannot live up to their dreams. Instead of being given a helping hand, millions are diverted to others who are in direct violation of federal law.

The Washington state Legislature, in blatant disregard to the financial limitations of its own citizens, has already guaranteed taxpayer-subsidized in-state tuition to those who have no legal right to live in the country. Considering many permanent residents and citizens in this country cannot afford tuition, this payout forgoes the needs of legal residents.

Washington House Bill 1079 has been in existence for six years. At the Federal level, a bill titled the DREAM Act is circulating through Congress. This act promises residency and eventual citizenship for illegal immigrants who have lived in the U.S. for five years and plan on attending college.

What the act does not spell out is the amount it would cost this nation. If the country can afford to send 13,000 illegal immigrants to college, why not spend the money for 13,000 American citizens instead? This act also fails to mention the amount in back taxes illegal immigrants owe.

The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller index released Tuesday showed home prices in 20 major cities tumbled by 18.6 percent from February 2008. That was slightly better than January's 19 percent and the first time since January 2007 the index didn't set a record.

The 10-city index slid 18.8 percent, the first time in 16 months its decline was not a record.

The grades were not so glowing, however, in a report card issued by Military Families United (MFU), which evaluated Obama and his defense team on Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay, veterans, defense policies, and military family issues.

Nationally, according to a FAIR report, illegal aliens attending America’s schools cost taxpayers a whopping $7.4 billion annually. That’s over and above any taxes illegal alien parents pay. Furthermore, illegal alien parents work at the lowest level on the pay ladder or off the books. Thus, American citizens must make up the difference.

In a thoroughly researched report by the Federation for American Immigration Reform, www.fairus.org, titled, “Breaking the Piggy Bank: how illegal immigration is sending schools into the red” 2008, Colorado taxpayers shell out $925 million for educating illegals, $82 million for medical costs and $38 million for incarceration costs. Another $68 million pays for English as a Second Language classes for illegals.

Colorado State Representative Kent Lambert(R) said, “We found some very interesting graphs from the Denver Public Schools today. The DPS retirement system is insolvent, and they are desperately trying to merge with the Colorado Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) to resolve their UNFUNDED LIABILITY. The PERA released a statement, “…the Board of Trustees endorses all aspects of the bill, with the exception of the funding provisions, which the Board opposes.” (PERA’s own actuarial status is also highly problematic, and lost about $15 billion in 2008; see http://www.kentlambert.com/Issues/TheEconomy/Index.html .”

A shocking decision has been handed down by the National Public Radio board.

In 1985, National Public Radio (NPR) adopted a policy stating that member stations had to provide "nonsectarian, non-political, noncommercial" educational programming. But in February 2009, the wording was changed to say: "NPR Member Stations shall provide ONLY [emphasis added] nonsectarian, non-political, noncommercial educational content on all broadcast channel(s) and related media distribution platforms such as member partners that use the NPR member brands."

The rule, which takes effect May 1, means that any NPR stations carrying religious programming must cease and desist that programming as of that date. In explaining its decision in a similar matter, PBS -- another federally funded media outlet -- says it "places a high value on presenting diverse perspectives, as opposed to rigidly adhering to any single political or religious point of view." Allowing such programming, it continues, "would cause the public's trust in PBS to erode, along with the value of the brand."

To have Orrin Hatch or Chuck Grassley at the helm would be an unmitigated disaster. Each are cut from the same cloth - that of the old guard Republicans in the Senate who have given us the train wreck that the Party has become. They would hire terrible staffers who would neither be the smartest lawyers nor actually conservative - and, potentially, maintain a significant number of Specter’s former staff.

Jeff Sessions, on the other hand, would field a talented team who could educate America on just who America is getting in the next Supreme Court justice . Barring something very odd and unexpected, the nominee will get confirmed. Therefore, our number one goal should be to make sure America knows who this person is and what he stands for - and you need the right people in place to make that happen.

Friday afternoon, CNN anchor Rick Sanchez observed that since “Obama is essentially replacing...a more liberal judge with what will eventually probably be a liberal judge doesn't really change things a lot,” but, he contended, a President McCain would have caused an “extreme” shift, as if one more non-liberal on the court would cause an “extreme” change: “If John McCain were the President of the United States today, this court would be changing in extreme ways, wouldn't it?” Of course, if McCain were President there wouldn't now be an opening on the court and it presumes McCain would nominate a conservative.

Sanchez's formulation, in which had cited RNC Chairman Michael Steele's point that Supreme Court openings are why conservatives should have supported McCain, came just after CNN's legal analyst, Jeffrey Toobin, described the court's current make up as consisting of “four very conservative justices” and four just plain “liberal justices” -- apparently not “very” liberal.

Is there a threat to Israel from the United States under Barack Obama? The question itself seems perverse. For in spite of the hostility to Israel in certain American quarters, this country has more often than not been the beleaguered Jewish state’s only friend in the face of threats coming from others. Nor has the young Obama administration been any less fervent than its last two predecessors in declaring an undying commitment to the security and survival of Israel.

Nevertheless, during the 2008 presidential campaign, friends of Israel (a category that, speculations to the contrary notwithstanding, still includes a large majority of the American Jewish community) had ample reason for anxiety over Obama. The main reason was his attitude toward Iran. After all, Iran under its current president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was vowing almost on a daily basis to “wipe Israel off the map” and was drawing closer and closer to acquiring the nuclear weapons and the ballistic missiles that would give the ruling mullocracy the means to do so. And yet Obama seemed to think that the best way to head off the very real possibility this posed of another holocaust was by entering into talks with Iran “without preconditions.” Otherwise, except for campaign promises, his record was bereft of any definitive indication of his views on the war the Arab/Muslim world has been waging against the Jewish state from the day of its founding more than sixty years ago.

Still—lest we forget—Obama did have a history of involvement with associates whose enmity toward Israel was unmistakable. There was, most notoriously, his longtime pastor, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. In addition to honoring the blatantly anti-Semitic Louis Farrakhan, Wright was on record as believing that Israel had joined with South Africa in developing an “ethnic bomb” designed to kill blacks and Arabs but not whites; he had accused Israel of committing “genocide” against the Palestinians; and he had participated in a campaign to get American companies to “divest” from Israel. None of this, however, nor all of it together, had elicited so much as a peep of protest from Obama, never mind provoking him into leaving Wright’s congregation. He remained a member for twenty years, during which time Wright officiated at his marriage and baptized his children.

About a week ago, I wrote a column that included a long laundry list of what Big Brother Obama is affecting Sher Zieveto destroy the USA’s Republic and why he and the Left must do so. Note: The underlying reason was and is to seize and retain—at all costs to humans living within the USA—power over We-the-People. It seems almost impossible to keep up with the presidential usurper Obama’s actions but, I’ll continue to attempt to do so for as long as is possible.

Today, we have Obama taking over the US banks which maintain 2/3 (that’s two-thirds folks!) of the USA’s assets. He is putting them through his own personal “stress tests” to ensure that they will not and cannot meet his parameters—so that Obama and his fellow anti-USA and globalist buddies will be able to control ALL of America’s funds. No longer being affected under the cloak and dagger of night, this atrocity is being completed in front of us all. So, now he will own the banks—take that Hugo Chavez! Obama will also soon own US car companies—outright. Under his pretense of it’s “the taxpayers that will own the auto companies” and his less than truthful statement “I don’t want to run auto companies” he is taking them over in order that he and his United Auto Workers union can and will soon run them.

Note: Handing the keys for General Motors and Chrysler over to the UAW is political payback for its support of Obama during the 2008 presidential election. We-the-People no longer matter. At best, Obama considers us pests and nuisances; at worst opposers to his pretender-to-the-throne status. In fact, We-the-People can go pound sand—or eat cake! Besides, dismantling and destroying the country appears to have become the most recreational and fun activity Obama, his minions and adherents have ever had. And his plans include recreating it so that it will never be able to be resurrected as a democratic republic again. Observation: That also means the liberties and freedoms will no longer be applicable—as Obama’s plans include making the US Constitution irrelevant in favor of international law. Don’t think it can happen? It’s already in process.

But regardless what I said, the young lady remained enamored with the 47-year-old Democratic "community organizer" -- and she shared with me that she "felt" God wanted her to vote for him. She believed we needed a change.

The Federal Communications Commission has announced the roster of a new advisory committee on "diversity" in communications, a move many critics have warned would mark the beginning of government regulation of talk radio and a reinstallation of the "Fairness Doctrine" by another name.

As WND reported, a think tank headed by John Podesta, co-chairman of Obama's transition team, mapped out a strategy in 2007 for clamping down on conservative talk radio by requiring stations to be operated by female and minority owners, which the report showed were statistically more likely to carry liberal political talk shows.

Therefore, the report concluded, the best strategy for getting equal time for "progressives" on radio lies in mandating "diversity of ownership" without ever needing to mention the former FCC policy of requiring airtime for liberal viewpoints, known as the "Fairness Doctrine."

WASHINGTON — Jack Kemp, the ex-quarterback, congressman, one-time vice-presidential nominee and self-described "bleeding-heart conservative," died Saturday. He was 73.

Kemp died after a lengthy illness, according to spokeswoman Bona Park and Edwin J. Feulner, a longtime friend and former campaign adviser. Park said Kemp died at his home in Bethesda, Md., in the Washington suburbs.

Kemp's office announced in January that he had been diagnosed with an unspecificed type of cancer. By then, however, the cancer was in an advanced stage and had spread to several organs, Feulner said. He did not know the origin of the cancer.
