The Iowa caucuses are known for their “living-room chats” where ordinary Iowans can meet candidates face-to-face and talk about what interests voters. When candidates have larger events or make major policy speeches, the crowds are bigger, but there is often still an opportunity for questions. But under the pressures of major media coverage, with polls narrowing in Iowa, campaigns can potentially control questions and coverage by planning questions ahead of time.

While no campaigns admit to this practice, at a recent Hillary Clinton campaign event in Newton, Iowa, some of the questions posed to the New York Senator were planned in advance, planting some audience members in the crowd.

On Tuesday Nov. 6, the Clinton campaign stopped at a biodiesel plant in Newton as part of a weeklong series of events to introduce her new energy plan. The event was clearly intended to be as much about the press as the Iowa voters in attendance, as a large press core helped fill the small venue. A couple of months later, after a confrontation with Chessmore, Peterson and the boy took off. Going missing for a week, they were eventually picked up by a Mexican police officer in Baja California. The boy said in an interview with The Associated Press later that he and the teacher had sex twice. She cried when they were parted.

My father was a medic in the U.S. Navy for four years during WWII, most of it in the Mediterranean theater, then on the way to the invasion of Japan in the summer of 1945, when the war abruptly ended. He didn't say much about the battles, the hundreds of wounded men streaming aboard the hospital ship where he was stationed, the triage, sorting out who could be patched up, who went straight to the surgeons, and who could only be given morphine to ease their dying. In Canada, Great Britain, and in the rest of the Commonwealth, those who have fallen in battle are remembered on November 11th, commemorating the end of the Great War in 1918.



The First World War is less well known in America than WWII since it entered the war late in 1917, three years after it had begun in Europe. Britain and its Commonwealth countries, along with France, Italy, and Russia battled the Germans and the Austro-Hungarian Empire for four years in conditions that had not been imaginable in previous wars. The horror of modern warfare became apparent and casualties mounted on a scale never before seen. What seems to have been forgotten, however, is not the sacrifice that was made, but that our soldiers (in Canada, Britain,

America and elsewhere) fight for precisely the same causes and values that we fought for in the Great War.



World War One saw the advent of horrifically effective new weapons. Long range artillery, poison gas, the airplane, the machine gun, trench warfare, and barbed wire changed the face of war. The tactics of warfare were far behind the effectiveness of the weapons being used. This resulted in massive casualties during poorly planned offensives. In one such battle on the western front, Canadian, British, French, and Australian soldiers attempted to push the entrenched Germans back from their lines. This was known as the Battle of Passchendale; the battle embodied the muddy trench warfare that so greatly increased the suffering of the common infantry soldier. At this horrible juncture, the British lost 300,000 men, including 36,000 Australians, 16,000 Canadians, and 3,000 New Zealanders. The Germans lost 260,000 men during the defense of their position. All this carnage occurred in the span of about one (1) month.

BOSTON -- Several anti-war veterans were arrested when they protested their exclusion from a Veterans Day event by refusing to move away from a podium.

The Boston chapter of a group called Veterans for Peace estimated 15 of its members and supporters were arrested Sunday at the event sponsored by the American Legion. Boston Police said several arrests were made, but did not have an exact number. The detainees were later released on bail.

"We're opposed to the U.S. invasion of Iraq; we're opposed to the planned invasion of Iran," said group member Winston Warfield, a Vietnam War veteran. "A lot of veterans view us as traitors."

In 1944, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed into law the "Servicemen's Readjustment Act," better known as the GI Bill. No wonder only 8% of troops even use their whole GI Bill benefit.***

Then, on Sunday, everything started falling down around her.

After a very Presidential-esque news conference - Clinton turned around to leave the reporters and their peppering questions. A staffer swooped open a curtain, and chaos ensued. Four large American flags came crashing in front of Senator Clinton as she headed for the door. In a controlled panic, the staffers and the Senator attempted to catch the flags before they fell to the ground.

New York Governor Eliot Spitzer has abandoned his attempt to give illegal aliens (and terrorists) the right to get any kind of driver’s licenses in his state. He first proposed to give illegal aliens drivers licenses that would be identical in every respect to those issued to citizens and legal visitors. That would have meant that people who violate American law on a continuing, moment-by-moment basis would get the same license given to those of us who obey the law. It would also have meant that illegals could vote, since under Federal Motor Voter Law (part of Bill Clinton’s “legacy”), the state would be required to give them a voter application at the time they applied for a license.



The opposition to that plan was fierce and bipartisan. Twenty-nine of the 52 county clerks who are responsible for license issuance said they would refuse to enforce Spitzer’s edict and began preparing a lawsuit. (The State DMV handles the job in ten other counties.) These included Democrats – one of them recently appointed by Spitzer himself to replace the man who left that office to become the State’s DMV Commissioner and at least two Democrat members of New York's Congressional delegation. Former New York City Democrat Mayor Ed Koch issued a strong statement in opposition. Current New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg also opposed the scheme (and he, as a former Democrat, a former Republican and now an independent, must be the ultimate in multi-partisanship).



Spitzer was elected with 70% of the vote only last year. So confident was he of his power as a result of that landslide, and so weak and disorganized was the remaining Republican opposition that he referred to himself as a “f-----g steamroller.” Well, a steamroller he may have been, but Spitzer himself planted a landmine in his path and turned himself into scrap metal. A Pew Research Center poll released late last month found that while four out of five American adults (81%) could name one of the Democratic presidential candidates, far fewer (just 59%) could recall any of the GOP candidates. Two congressmen are calling for the immediate release of imprisoned Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean and a complete investigation of their prosecutor after the arrest last night of the drug smuggler at the center of the case.

Reps. Ted Poe, R-Texas, and Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., say that with the arrest of Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila, Congress and the attorney general should launch a full-scale review of U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton's prosecution of the border agents.

Sutton, said Rohrabacher in a statement, "is now confirming what members of Congress and the public already figured out about Osvaldo Davila. He's a rotten habitual drug smuggler who should have been the target of Sutton's prosecution, instead of Border Patrol agents Ramos and Compean."

Experienced Democratic political operatives believe Clinton wants to avoid a repetition of 2004, when attacks on each other by presidential candidates Howard Dean and Richard Gephardt were mutually destructive and facilitated John Kerry's nomination.

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) took the rare step of issuing a statement in his own name on Saturday to call attention to a report by columnist Robert D. Novak that New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign is sitting on “scandalous” information about Obama.

The information was not described and there is no proof it exists.

Obama accused Clinton of “'swift boat’ politics” and vowed he will not be intimidated.

Democratic Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton was heckled by a member of the audience during a forum on global warming on Saturday.

Clinton was interrupted by a Code Pink antiwar demonstrator shouting that she had voted for the war in Iraq.

Taking it in stride, Clinton heckled the Code Pink antiwar demonstrator right back as he was escorted out.

The top three Democratic presidential contenders remain locked in a close battle in Iowa, with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) seeing her advantages diminish on key issues, including the questions of experience and which candidate is best prepared to handle the war in Iraq, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News Poll.

Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) draws support from 30 percent of likely Democratic caucus-goers in Iowa, compared with 26 percent for Clinton and 22 percent for former senator John Edwards (N.C.). New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson received 11 percent. The results are only marginally different from a Post-ABC poll in late July, but in a state likely to set the tone for the rest of the nominating process, there are significant signs of progress for Obama -- and harbingers of concern for Clinton.

The factors that have made Clinton the clear national front-runner -- including her overwhelming leads on the issues of the Iraq war and health care, a widespread sense that she is the Democrats' most electable candidate, and her strong support among women -- do not appear to be translating on the ground in Iowa, where campaigning is already fierce and television ads have been running for months.
