I gave her a bottle for the first time at 8mo with formula, she sucked it down and would have nothing to do with me after that LOL Try mixing small amounts of formula with more bm, then slowly switch the ratios...until you have more formula than bm, or equal, whichever you want. In that case though, I would think it was more the bottle then the formula. Isaac is almost 7 months old and they have been using bottles with BM. Taste buds might be a stickler for him..... then again, he might love the taste! Yeah, I know. I was responding to Sandy's clip about her daughter preferring the bottle... simply saying it was most likely the BOTTLE she preferred, and not the formula.

When you use formula, can you switch around what type you use or is it best to stick to one kind/brand/etc? We have some free sample canisters, but they're all different kinds of formula. Our doctor said that all formula is pretty much the same (barring any allergic reaction and such). Could we just use all the different samples we have even though they're all different? Formula is expensive and I don't want to buy any more when we have these free ones... especially since we don't use enough to go through a whole can before it goes bad.

You can use the same type(dairy based, soy based) and switch between brands of the same type. But you shouldn't switch between types. The 12oz cans of powder are good for 30 days, so I would imagine you use that up in time since they don't make a ton.

I would also use the free samples first, so long as switching doesn't bother him. I actually used all my soy samples also because they didn't bother Noah...but they did smell much worse.

also just be aware of the iron content in the formulas when you switch...jumping from one iron level to another can cause baby some tummy upset and constipation. Try to keep that consistant if you can.

She could never (and still can't) eat fast enough. Even now, she'll be on her fourth helping by the time the rest of us are halfway through our first LOL

That makes me laugh, Sandy. My dad used to call me his "Ethiopian poster child"(no offense intended) 'cause I was so skinny and ate so fast. I've had to learn to eat slower now so I actually feel when I'm getting full and so I don't get reflux. Oh the joys of getting old.

Oh, and I had another question. Malcolm is 3 1/2 months old. The doctor said we can start solids between 4-6 months, whenever he seems ready. If we get to the point where I can't pump enough milk during the day, would it be better to supliment with formula or with solids (even if Malcolm doesn't seem quite "ready" yet)? Does that make sense? I have a good supply, but time is the issue. There are days when I don't have time to pump more than once in the workday and I can't possibly get 20 oz (what Malcolm usually needs) in one sitting.

It's definitely better to supplement with formula, the calories are VERY different between solids and formula, and at his age formula and breastmilk need to be his main source of nutrition. Can you add an extra pumping session in the evening or even *very* first thing in the morning? I always got the most in the morning.

You sound good to go then! Formula really isn't that bad. We used the generic from Walmart and it wasn't as big an expense as I would have thought. Probably $80 a month.

Amy, can you get WIC? If you qualify, they will cover at least most of your formula costs when he starts drinking more.

Or they will provide a huge amount of food/groceries to help you during nursing and you may be better able to afford formula on your own. We have friends that do that, she claims she's still breastfeeidng and WIC gives them tons of extra food coupons.. Kinda irritates me with the lying but not my guilty conscious.
