Amy, can you get WIC? If you qualify, they will cover at least most of your formula costs when he starts drinking more.

Nah, I'm just a cheapskate I'd complain about the cost even if I made a million dollars a month Of course, when we lived in a small town, our income was such that we would have qualified for WIC if we had kids, but the cost of living was so much lower there, that we wouldn't have needed it. Now I make a lot more, but the cost of living here is a lot higher, too. We definitely don't qualify for WIC and if my husband were the one working, I think we'd be doing pretty well on this salary. With him the one staying home and me the one working, we somehow seem to spend more money than we would if I were the one staying home Ah, well... it's good practice for living on one income even after my husband finds a job

Good question on the formula types, Amy. I was wondering the same thing. I have three canisters of Enfamil Lipil with Iron and one Similac Advanced.

I agree, I'd supplement with formula over solids. We do lots of solids, but never to take the place of breastmilk/formula.

Some of you may remember that I had to start giving Isaac one or two bottles of forumla while I am at work because I cant pump enough. The milk is there but I just cant get it out. We nurse exclusively at home on the weekends and in the evenings just fine. Adding in many more pumpings is near impossible if I want to get any work done or spend anytime with Isaac. We have been doing this for about a month, well this week he's started refusing it. Or taking just a little with obvious distaste. What do I do?

Just to clarify - is it your milk he's refusing or the formula?

If you *need* him to take the formula, all you can do is keep trying. Sorry.

How many milk feeds and solid feeds is he having per day, out of interest?

He gets three solid feedings per day. And as far as milk feedings he gets the two bottles while I am gone (from 8:45-5:15) and I nurse him right before I leave. When I get home sometimes he nurses right away, sometimes he waits a few hours. It really varies on his milk feedings because we feed on demand but its usually 6-8 depending on the day.

ETA...I just spoke with MIL (my mom had him yesterday and today when he started refusing it) and she has been using distilled water and I've been using tap water so maybe thats the issue.

I thought distilled water wasn't sterile? Also that its minerals have been removed? It wouldn't have been my first choice for mixiing formula.

Is there any particular reason why she isn't using boiled tap water?

I have no idea. She said it was distilled. She was using that because thats what my SIL (we exclusively formula feeds) was using at her house when they went to visit. And SIL is a nurse and can do no wrong ......

distilled has a different taste for sure, can you get some to try and see if thats the problem?

So Isaac was taking formula fine before when it was made from tap water?

When we first started it was tap, I was mixing it up at home and sending it. I do that for my mom. My MIL went out and bought her own can (same stuff, I verified) so she has been mixing it up herself with the distilled water. She has Isaac more than my mom. My mom has him today and yesterday. Yesterday he took his breastmilk bottle fine and wouldnt take the formula bottle at all. Today he didnt get a breastmilk bottle (didnt have enough) and he (so far the last time I talked to her) took part of the formula bottle but obviously was not impressed. MIL said he takes it all just fine without hesitation for her.

Is she the sort who'd tell you that anyway, even if it wasn't quite so?

No, she's good about really telling me exactly how he's behaved during the day. She would *definitely* pick up on something being "wrong". I get the "he sneezed three times today, make sure he isnt getting sick" and the "poop report" too.

Do you think it has anything to do with who is giving him the bottle? It seems like he's maybe being pickier about the formula, but I know Lydia can be sensitive to who feeds her. There is one daycare teacher who she will drink 6 oz. from, and another one that she has never, ever taken more than 3 oz. from. Maybe since he's not with your mom as much he just doesn't want to eat as well from her?

I dont know, he's never had any issue with it before though.

Well we are doing a "formula experiment" today. I mixed a bottle and sent with MIL. If he wont take that bottle, but will take the one she mixes, its the water. Otherwise he may being saying "hey, I'll just wait for mom."

I don't know anyone who uses boiled tap water, the formula cans recommend using distilled water. I think most of it is steam distilled. We used water from my IL's reverse osmosis system when Gabby was little, then switched to tap. The only time we used distilled was with my parents well water.

Erin, it really could just be that he prefers the bottle from your MIL over your mom.

Not in the UK they don't.

This must be an American thing.

Why not use tap water? is it not good quality? (I remember it was atrocious in Texas when I was there, but I haven't been anywhere else in the USA so I don't know)

I think most people with city water(where the minerals and everything else is regulated) DO use tap water. I hesitated to use the well water because it was different then what Gabby was used to and the mineral content is VERY different. My system gets upset from changes in well water, so I didn't want to mess with her even more sensitive system.

Ugh...I just talked with MIL and he has now taken another bottle. I dont know what the deal is. He wont take hardley any from my mom but takes 3 or 4 bottles a day from MIL, though I dont know why so many. Two is normally enough, but everytime he lets out a little cry they feed him. I dont want to sound like I dont want them feeding him but....I dont know. I'm in a mood today and this is stressing me out.

We have city water.
Many people over here have well water (thats why SIL uses distilled). We dont have well water hooked up to our house (but we do have a well!).

We have a lot of it in rural areas. My parents still live in the town where I grew up. The house I grew up in was on city water, but if you drove 10 minutes in any direction the city water lines ended and people have wells. Where my parents live there aren't even lines on the road and you can't get cable TV or anything but dial up(or the ever expensive satellite) internet.
