Anyone have their bleeding go from brown back to red several times? According to the paperwork, I'm supposed to call in if this happens, but I'm not alarmed- very annoyed, but not alarmed- I can still use one pad for many hours, so it's not a volume question, but I have gone from virtually stopped altogether for 12-18 hours to having periods of gushes (and even making the toilet water pink) at least 3 times now. Tomorrow will be two weeks since labor day... With my first, I bled for 3-4 weeks, Anna's was only 2-2.5 weeks (maybe a little less)- just wondering what ya'll think before I do anything... Oh, I'm anemic too, wondering if that is affecting things...

Yes, mine would always go back to red several times. Usually meant I was doing too much and needed to rest more. If you're not worried, you probably just need to rest more.

I had tearing after my birth and I was just given ibuprofen (they told me to take up to 4 at a time if I felt like it ) I don't know what they do after c-sections here, but meds like percocet definitely aren't offered here after deliveries!

Head three hours west to my area of the province and they go back to being dispensed like candy. They are actually shocked when people (such as me) turn them down. And they think you're totally delirious if you don't even want ibuprofen.

Thanks Catherine!!!

So ... I don't have time to read 18 pages. But I have a question.

How long does the post-pardum bleeding last???

It depends. Mine was usually about a month, but I think that is long. The first week was the only really heavy flow, unless I was overdoing things. After that, it was pretty light and would stop and start for a while. With you having had a c-section, it should be pretty light, I would think, because they are able to clean things out while they are in there. But I'm not 100% sure of that. My delivery that I had an emergency D&C after was also the one I bled the longest after (4 months!), but my body was very messed up after that delivery.

I had a section first time, and a vaginal delivery second time, and didn't notice any difference at all in the amount or duration of the post-natal bleeding. It was about a month with both.

Mine was about 10 days total, it wasn't bad at all and was rarely heavy. I did have a D&C after her birth, though which could have changed things.

My first bleeding with Hannah lasted about 6-8 weeks but that isn't the norm. I had second degree tearing internally from the vacuum extraction so that's the reason for that.

With Jael, a normal vaginal delivery I think the bleeding was light -medium for about 10-12 days with some spotting after that but nothing major.

I'm at 14 days. Some really light, some really heavy. The heavy days correlate with cramping.

Those of you who have had c-sections:
Periodically when I pee I feel a really sharp pain through the center of my abdomen that lasts a couple minutes after I'm done. Is that normal ... since it's the same muscles involved?

When you say "really heavy", how heavy do you mean - eg how quickly does it soak a pad? And are there any clots? If so, how big are they?

It could be an irritation from when you had the catheter in. I suggest you make an appointment to see your doctor and take a urine sample with you, in case it's an infection.

Really heavy is relative. It's all minor compared to an actual period. The heavier moments will soak a pad in a few hours. No real clots that I've noticed. The lighter moments are barely anything at all on the pad after almost a full day.

I'll call my doctor on Monday and ask about the symptoms.

That sounds fine.

It's if it soaks a pad in under an hour that you need to be concerned, and if the clots are more than about an inch in diameter.

Thanks Manda. I'm not concerned too much about the bleeding. Mostly curious when it stops. It's the pain when I pee that I'm concerned about. At first I thought it was a UTI, but the pain is deep inside and different. It's not a burning on the outside. It feels like it's coming from about the point of my incision.

Make sure and tell the doctor that. It could still be a UTI but high up (bladder), it could be an issue with the stitches, or it could just be "one of those things" that will pass with time, eg bruising of the bladder from the op.

Christine, congratulations on baby Audrey! I bet she is a cutie!

I will send a friend (that doesn't post much anymore) over to this thread. She had a C-section and can possibly shed some light on that pain for you. I will also ask my sister (the one that lives kind of in your area). She had a CS with her twin boys 18 months ago.

Also, I had a vaginal delivery and bled for almost 4 weeks with only that first week or 8-9 days being "heavy" and lots of clots. My sister delivered via C-section and said the surgeon must have gotten a bunch out then because she was prepared for her post-partum bleeding to be much heavier but it never really was -- it went about 3 weeks for her and with very few clots (or big ones, anyway).

Congratulation again on the little pink bundle of joy!

christstar,

When you and your husband do decide to start intimacy again, it's wise to choose positions that don't put any weight on your stomach, because it is likely to be tender still, as your wound heals in layers, and it can take a while to be able to bear the pressure on that area.

Whilst a rupture of the uterine incision isn't impossible, it's highly unlikely at this stage, especially if your wound is dry. I didn't mention it because you're going to talk to your doctor anyway, and I didn't want to scare you unnecessarily. It could be adhesions (scar tissue that forms a connection between tissues or organs that are not normally connected), but I'm thinking that because you only get the pain when urinating it's more like to be a high up UTI.

Let us know what the doctor says! And in the meantime, try to take things as easy as you can.

I'm not thinking so much rupture, as I am just pain of healing and using the muscles more and more. The pain is very similar to what I felt the first time I went to the bathroom post-catheter.

It's only 11 here right now. I still have time.

OK. talked to the technician.

As long as there is no discharge, the pain is just a healing pain. If it gets worse or I notice discharge, I am to call back.
