I don't believe for a second that nursing helps one bit in post-partum weight loss. I've read (on LLL and Kellymom) that the hormones from nursing actually encourage your body to keep and pack on more padding. Especially in the upper body. I don't believe that a woman naturally sheds pounds for 6 weeks post-partum and then has to start working to lose the rest. Most women stop losing naturally at 2 weeks, and then scratch their heads wondering when the promised PP weight loss will happen. I don't believe those calculators that say, 'Baby weighs 8lbs, placenta weighs 8lbs, water is 4lbs,etc.......You will only have 4lbs of residual fat to lose' Real life: You have a baby, and you only lose 12lbs. Even if the baby weighs 10lbs. I'm 6 weeks PP today. I have been purposefully eating healthy, but not working out. I've only lost 18 lbs. [&o] I'm pretty sure I can reduce my calories pretty more, because I think my triple chinned son is clearly thriving. But it makes me nervous to reduce calories when nursing. I know it's probably safe, but I don't want my milk supply to suffer.
