peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (2/6/2008 9:01:26 PM)

corn starch will work nicely....and airing out if you can

TammyIsBlessed -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (2/21/2008 3:41:48 PM)

OK - as far as losing baby weight. I've got 25 lbs to go - grrr[:@] I'd like to lose at least some of it by the time we go to Florida. I know one thing that's supposed to help a lot is to simply not eat after suppertime. gasp - no nightsnack!?! [:(] My only question is - does that matter if I'm nursing to go that long without calories? From supper to breakfast? I do always have a glass of chocolate milk before bed so I would get a few calories from that - is that enough?

Sideways -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (2/21/2008 3:47:07 PM)

Call me crazy, but if you're getting enough fluids, and sufficient calories in a day - then I think you should be fine, unless your blood sugar drops really bad (and you'd know it if it did).

I'd encourage you to abstain from calories post dinner, unless you're going to wake up starving hungry at 3am or something. WOF always used to say that if you wanted to loose weight while BFing, calculate how many calories your body needs to maintain weight, say 2000. Then subtract 200 for loosing weight, then add 500 for BFing - equals 2300.

It wouldn't hurt to talk to your doctor about loosing baby weight while BFing. Always keep hydrated, though!

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (2/21/2008 5:01:50 PM)

I don't believe in dieting when nursing (it can cause a drop in milk)...plus I have found through the years that it never makes a difference with me anyway...my body will not lose weight when nursing. Maybe you need to ask in the health and fitness folder.

firefightermama -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (3/11/2008 7:31:08 AM)

How come everyone says that nursing helps to lose weight after? I don't believe it [8D]

Georgia-Peach -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (3/11/2008 8:20:55 AM)

I don't either. My sister and my best friend both told me how the pounds would melt off. They both were at their pre-pregnancy weight or under by their 6 week check up. So I had these visions of the weight melting off, didn't happen. He was 6 months old before I was able to get down to my pre-pregnancy weight which such a letdown. I did loose quite a bit of it in the first month, but about 10-15 lbs. just stuck on to me until he was around 6 months old.

PrudentWife -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (3/11/2008 9:04:12 AM)

I don't believe for a second that nursing helps one bit in post-partum weight loss. I've read (on LLL and Kellymom) that the hormones from nursing actually encourage your body to keep and pack on more padding. Especially in the upper body.

I don't believe that a woman naturally sheds pounds for 6 weeks post-partum and then has to start working to lose the rest. Most women stop losing naturally at 2 weeks, and then scratch their heads wondering when the promised PP weight loss will happen.

I don't believe those calculators that say, 'Baby weighs 8lbs, placenta weighs 8lbs, water is 4lbs,etc.......You will only have 4lbs of residual fat to lose' Real life: You have a baby, and you only lose 12lbs. Even if the baby weighs 10lbs.

I'm 6 weeks PP today. I have been purposefully eating healthy, but not working out. I've only lost 18 lbs. [&o] I'm pretty sure I can reduce my calories pretty more, because I think my triple chinned son is clearly thriving. But it makes me nervous to reduce calories when nursing. I know it's probably safe, but I don't want my milk supply to suffer.

PrincessDonna -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (3/11/2008 9:26:04 AM)

Prudent, did you have milk supply issues with Reagan? If you didn't, I think it'd be okay to cut calories a bit and just make sure you are drinking lots. I plan on doing that after this one because supply is never a problem for me.[8|]

Me neither.

Prudent, when the weather gets warmer will you be able to get out for walks more perhaps?

It doesn't really help until AFTER the 6 month mark. Want a good read? Check out "Fighting the Female Fat Cell After Pregnancy". I just started reading last night and some of the info is a little outdated but for the most part it's good, and VERY realistic.

I have been watching carbs/fat intake and it's not working like it used to so I KNOW I need to add some exercise. The weather here is getting nice again so we're going to start walking. Fwiw, I still have about 10lbs to lose[&:]

it doesn't with me. My body looses the initial weight right after the baby, then that's it. Not until I stop nursing does my body lose any more weight.

I know that is true for my body!!! Usually max is maybe 3 weeks of losing weight....basically when my uterus is back down in size then my body is done with any weight loss that will happen.

JoyfulLady -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (3/11/2008 11:31:32 AM)

I must be the unusual one. When I got home from the hospital (after having a 7 lb baby!) I had only lost 5 lbs! [sm=icon_smile_yikes.gif] BUT in the next 3 weeks, I lost 40 lbs....and I had only gained 35 when pregnant.

Mrs.Wifey -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (3/11/2008 11:37:59 AM)

Lucky you, Amber[8D] Actually though, I lost somewhere between 25-30lbs in the first 3 weeks after I had Gabby then I put a couple lbs back on while I was nursing even though I wasn't eating anymore then I ever have[&:]

JoyfulLady -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (3/11/2008 12:56:37 PM)

I should add that I look worse now than pre-preg, even though I lost all that weight. [&:] My butt is smaller, but I have such a horribly saggy stomach since I got soooo big. My husband (lovingly) says it looks and feels like Jello. [8D] I get a "muffin top" no matter what I wear.

It won't just be from getting "sooooo big", it will be from the Caesarean section. The incision cuts through your muscles, weakening them. So some of your muscles are stretched, some are weakened, and some are both [&:].

You will be able to get them tighter with some post-Caesarean exercises, but you need to take it very gently to start with.

PrudentWife -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (3/12/2008 8:43:36 AM)

Nope, no supply problems that I was aware of with Reagan. She was & still is just a skinny baby. Lincoln is a fat baby. I just can't get over it. He has so many rolls on his thighs, it's so cute!

Yes, I'll be able to go for walks soon. It can snow until May, but there are still warm days in between the frost & snow. My mom said she'll buy us a double stroller, so I'm just waiting on that.

My incision, both times, is almost right on the pubic bone. Not through much, if any, stomach muscle. I can't even see my incision it's so low. Now the pregnancy itself stretched/weakened my stomach muscle.

Amber, I gained/lost 40 lbs in the first couple weeks with my first as well. And don't worry, your skin will probably tighten up *some* over the next year, as your tummy muscles get back to normal, etc.! Mine did. But it took right around a year.

TammyIsBlessed -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (3/12/2008 11:39:14 AM)

Well, I didn't have a c-section and I've had saggy skin ever since DD#1. I gained 40 lbs with her and the lost 35 of that within 2 weeks of her birth. I had gotten so huge, and my stomach went down so fast that my skin just could not keep up. Despite regular exercising, the skin has never tightened up totally. It has improved somewhat in between, but it was always obvious. No stretch marks, but really saggy skin. Kinda like people who are really overweight and lose a lot in a short time - they have the same problem (on a much larger scale of course!). I can't stand it, because my stomach gets skinny again but it looks horrible. Well, it's not skinny yet after #4, but eventually right?[:D]

Georgia-Peach -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (3/12/2008 2:11:33 PM)

I had a vaginal deliver, but I still have some saggy skin lovingly referred to as the mommy apron. Its not a lot, but its there. I just wish I had a personal trainer like the stars and have it go away, I bet none of them have mommy aprons...ugh! Oh well, if I got my butt in gear I could probably get some of it to go away.

Actually . . . . . did you happen to see Cindy Crawford on the cover of Star (I think it was Star) magazine a month or so ago? It showed her in a bikini and it was supposed to be a "horrible" picture of her. She is slender, like she always is -- but her belly skin just below the belly button is saggy and wrinkly with stretchmarks. I was so thrilled to see it!! I thought -- "Wow!! A real supermodel who has a real mom's body! Awesome!!" She obviously hadn't had it worked on and I thought it was kinda cool. [:D]

Georgia-Peach -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (3/12/2008 2:54:28 PM)

No, I didn't see that, but it makes me feel better.

PrincessDonna -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (3/12/2008 3:04:29 PM)

My tummy is something I'd actually consider having plastic surgery on when I'm done having babies, AND if I can get down to a weight I like. I doubt I'll be able to get rid of the flab. My mom is not heavy and she never lost hers after 4 kids.

RepentanceIsRequired -> RE: Post Pardum Talk...(cont'd) (3/12/2008 3:10:18 PM)

I'm right with you Donna. I will be working over the next couple years to lose weight. I should really lose about 60-80 lbs. However I would like to have more kids yet. When the time comes and I am able to lose that weight, surgery will be the only help in getting rid of the flabby skin.
