Ick...I had a bad run yesterday. Actually, it was more of a walk than a run. It was so hot, which I underestimated, that I pooped out 15 minutes in. Yuck.

Hate those runs that ends abruptly. But oh well, tomorrow is another day.

I didn't run for 3 days and and only did 7.5 in total Mon and Tues. But today, I wanted to get some mileage and I was going to do 5 but I ended up doing 6. I feel happy about that. It's a make up work out. Tomorrow ould be mountain biking day. I hope to find some dry trails as it's been raining here all day.

Yah, bad runs happen. Get back out there the next time.

I had a very frustrating day. I was so looking forward to my long swim this afternoon. IT just wasn't to be. Got to the lake and there was a pop up thunder storm. Sigh... At home, it was still sunny and terribly humid. This evening it started pouring. Nothing like running in the rain! So I head out and... the rain stops! It started back up during my cool down walk. 2.56m, 21:47, 8:31pace

I did bicycling today - rode to my aunt & uncle's house, visited a bit and showed off my bike, raced my uncle & cousin, then rode back to my house. I even saw a small jackrabbit. Very cool! It got pretty hot later on though so I'm glad I rode in the morning. By afternoon, I took my dog for a walk for just over a 1/2 mile and by the time we got back to the house, just walking had made me sweat like a pig...

I cycled 21 kms today on a road trail as all the off road trails are muddy due to rain yesterday. I was going to do twice that but my daughter called me to pick her up. Just as well, I need a rest this weekend anyway. I'm finding that under 20 km and I don't get much out of it if it's an easy trail. It's not worth the drive to the trail head.

I'm lucky to have a number of bike paths very near me. One runs along one side of my development. Another long one is only about 1.25 miles from my house which is a fun ride (mostly downhill) although not so fun to finish... I made it today though without walking my bike so I was proud of myself. Now we'll see how sore I am tomorrow! I tried to do extra stretching when I got home...

I like living by a bike path. If I moved i'd have to figure out where the closet park would be.

I did the elliptical today and flopped around in the pool. Someday I'll get lessons because I swim like a little kid.

The trail that I described is 30 mins drive from where I live through the highway. So, with the price of gas, it is a pretty long drive. We have sem trails close to our house which is about 10 km away from where I live, and I can usually bike all the way there, but it's soaking wet today. There's another one, and I really like this one, but again, it's so wet.

I learned that I'm not supposed to spray my bike the way I did last week when I took it to the car wash. My friend told me that it'll get all rusted. So I'm avoiding getting it all wet. He had to do a tinker with it a lot to fix it because I never maintained the bike since I got it last year. A lot of the parts were bent and the cables were all screwed up due to some of times that I've crashed it.

But I'm loving biking. I've only been riding for a year, and I think I'm really ready to do something different from just the normal trails that I've been doing.

Prairie--I give my bike a good soap and water bath! We ride a lot in less than ideal conditions--salty roads in the winter, rain in the spring/summer. My bike gets dirty! I fix up a bucket of hot soapy water and wash the frame down well. Any moving parts are lubed afterwards. The chain gets a special cleaning and lube. I use my bike for racing, so she does require some special care.

Ds1 and I went for a ride this morning. It rained the entire time! But, it was a gentle summer rain, and actually quite enjoyable! Yah, bikes and bodies were filthy when we finished. 46miles in 2:40.

This afternoon it cleared up so I was able to go to the lake for a long swim. I swam for 1:33, and based on pool times, my friends are thinking it was slightly over 2miles.

So, you don't' worry about any parts rusting?
Great job on the 46 miles. I planned on doing just the same distance as last week, but my ride got cut short. I'm so tired anyway, so I better rest what's left of the weekend. 2 more weeks before my vacation and I'd like to get some more riding here without getting my legs too tired. IT's a 3 day drive and I'd like to be totally rested for all the stuff we're going to do. Checking out some hiking trails and there's one that I'm so absolutely thrilled and can't wait to do. Plus we're doing some climbing, zip lining, downhill mountain biking, and lots and lots of hiking, regular riding, and hopefully hanging around the beach.

Other than the right running shoes, do you invest in other gears for running and cycling?

Prairie--worried about my bike rusting? Nope! Tequila Sunrise is my old bike. She's a custom built steel frame. She's 20 years old. Assuming I put 2000miles on her every year (some years more, some years less), and not always "ideal" conditions, that's about 40,000miles. She is just starting to show some rust on the underside of the toptube. Most likely this is from sweat when I ride her on the trainer. My Ruby Girl is carbon fiber, so she can't rust!

I do wear running shoes. I have a great running store. Also, I have partial sponsorship from Brooks, so I now order shoes and clothing from them. I also buy a lot of running clothing from the thrift store. Get to know the feel of technical fabric, and you can snap up shirts for $2 or so.

For bicycling, I do wear cycling shorts. I've found that Performance shorts have way too much padding, which tends to bunch. Now that I'm doing triathlons, I tend to wear more tri-shorts. Basically lycra shorts with fleece for the chamois. I also did get a couple trisuits this season, which I love. They are not modest at all.

Anyway, if you know where to shop, you can get some real deals!

Hey, where did you guys all go? Where are all my online running buddies??? You all went on holidays or what?

I'm so sick today, so no running. I think I've been pushing myself too hard until it finally caught up to me. I might do a bit of yoga, but the body is really screaming for rest. I feel like I can just sleep for the rest of the day.

I'm here! Yesterday was my day off (from exercise not work ). Today I ran 2 miles at a pretty decent pace for me (18:31). There were a lot of walkers in my neighborhood this morning. It's nice to see! One elderly gentleman has to use a walker. He walks for a short distance, then sits on the walker. Walks a bit more. Sits and rests. He may have problems, but it blesses me to see him doing what he can and getting out there. He does more than some much younger folks who are healthy do!

Anyway, I have a 2 mile fun run this Saturday. I'm looking forward to it although I'm not looking forward to the time. The race starts at 7:30am... On a Saturday...

Kristin--My Grandma uses a walker. And she's out there walking at least a mile every day. We had to get her a new walker because she wore out the old flimsy one. We teased her about needing racing wheels for her new walker!

I had a really enjoyable run this morning. My coach gave me "permission" to hit it a bit, so hit it I did! I ran at near race pace.

Good luck on the race and have fun. YOu'll have a blast. Waking up that early is never fun. How far is the race from your place? I'm pretty sure it'll be worth it.

Way to go! I'm jealous. No running for me today. I feel so run down. I think I'm coming down with the flu. I did 80 mins of yoga though. That's good enough for me. The instructor on the DVD that I do seems like she's doing boot camp yoga, lol.

The run isn't far - maybe 10 minutes from my house. We have a lot of runs and such in our area which is nice. You can run in something just about every month and never have to head out of town.

And I hope you feel better! (((PrairieHiker)))

10 mins isn't that bad. Just put on your running shoes and run to the race course. Do you eat before you go in these races? I know I'd have to eat tonnes the night before because i can't eat and run. It gives me the worst cramp.

No running. I have the flu. That's why I'm posting like crazy, lol.

Actually it's a 10 minute drive (half of that is freeway). If I ran there, I wouldn't make it. I usually don't eat before. That makes me really queezy when I run. But, I don't usually eat before I run anyway so it's no big deal.

Sorry to hear you got sick! I keep telling myself that I refuse to ever get sick again. It's too hard to get back in to things after a bug. Fortunately, I don't get sick very often...

Whoop whoop! 3.1 miles tonight at 36:27 and a leg massage from my husband--I'm ready for the 5K Saturday morning!!!

I have to decide what to eat before I race. I know I don't need a lot, but I have low blood sugar so I need something...any suggestions? A friend who runs just eats a banana an hour or so before, but I never eat bananas so I don't know if that's good for blood sugar or not.

Eat at least 1 hour before (or earlier). Stay away from carbs - those will raise your blood sugar fine, but you'll tend to drop quickly... Protein will stay with you longer: dairy, protein bar, trail mix (nuts, raisins, etc). Stuff like that.

Yeah. What she said. And whatever you do, do not, I repeat DO NOT, drink a smoothie of any kind before a race! I did that last year before my first walking race, thinking it would be good for me . . . I felt so bloated that it was pitiful!

Okay. I'll peruse the protein bars at the pharmacy when I go later. Runner's World just said to have something easy to digest and suggested a banana and a cup of skim milk.

I think the key is not to eat too close to running. Find what works for you.

I ran 3 miles this morning at a pretty decent time. I'm actually kind of surprised because I was really having a hard time getting going this morning...

Still didn't run. Haven't run since last Sat when I did 6 miles. I'm finally getting better. I did an hour of Pilates, then went for an hour of bike ride. We have this trail close by that I often do, but today, I decided to check out what's after what I thought was the end of the trail. What do you know? There's a really good trail behind it that's really more difficult. A real mountain bike trail that has a lot of ups and downs and trees and roots, and somewhat narrow. That portion is short, maybe just a km. But I did it, and I'm quite happy I found it. I had a really nice ride.

Is it true that most people don't wear underwear under those bike shorts when they're riding? Just have to ask. I don't mean anything perverse by that. I'm just researching what gears to buy, and someone mentioned to me that when you have bike shorts on, you don't need to wear anything underneath.
