Now, I'm thinking of investing in cycling gears (shoes, shorts, gloves, etc) and I'm thinking...whoa, do I really need all of this? Perhaps God is nudging me to look at my spending wisely. But I will get a pair of bike shorts still. Shoes, um, that can wait.

Yes, you go comando under cycling shorts. Otherwise, you are sitting on seams! Seriously, cycling shorts have padding where you need it, and seams so you aren't sitting on them. Velowear still has some salesman's samples available. Woman's XS and XL. Not sure if either would fit you. Performance and BikeNashbar also have some shorts in the $20 range. Another place to check is thrift stores. Personally, I'm not grossed out about it. You wash 'em and they are as good as new. I'm sitting here in a running skort and tri-top, both from the thrift store. I had an okay run this morning. Yesterday's bike/run certainly took it's tole! I actually ran less than my coach had me down for today. 3.9m, 34:25, 8:50 pace. Tomorrow is my long run, so I want to have something in the tank for that!

Phosaud and Stella, good luck to both of your races tomorrow. Imagine me on the side streets cheering you on, fledgling my arms and screaming, Good job, Way to go! I love watching races. It's so inspiring. I did a 5 mile run just now after not running for a week. I did OK. About 10 min 14.4 sec avg. So, I'm getting faster. I think the time on the bike has really helped strengthen my left quad. About 4 months ago, my left quad was at least 2 inches bigger than the right. Now, they are almost even, but not the same in strength. I'm so happy that I'm on my way back. My daughter and I are planning on doing a training ride tomorrow. Maybe a 40 km one to see if she can actually do the trail in BC. So excited. I even looked for a hydration pack for both of us, but they are so expensive. I'll still buy them because they come in handy for our hikes too.

After months of training and anticipation, I finally ran my first 5K road race today. It was part of our city's Las Fiestas celebration sponsored by Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic church. I arrived a little after 7:00 to pick up my race packet, which contained my race number--22, the race t-shirt, a Budweiser visor (which I will never wear), a keyring/flashlight from one of our local hospitals, a tiny first aid kid from another local hospital, and what appears to be a one-person-sized cooler that is blue and says "Bud Light" on it. Where was Shiner Bock for this race? I was pretty nervous and there wasn't a single person there I had ever laid eyes on. So after I got my packet I went back to my car to eat my Power Bar. Eat might imply that I was enjoying myself, so let's just say I consumed the Power Bar. Or most of it. While I was chewing and pondering the gritty stuff in the supposedly nutritious hunk of chocolate...stuff, I amused myself by watching a very sinew-y man shave his legs. After he shaved his legs, he took off his well-worn running shoes and put on even more well-worn shoes. Then he taped up his shins, removed his shirt and jogged over to the starting line for the one-mile race. (Hello? 1975 called and wanted their running shorts back!) NOTE: He turned out to be an awesome runner. I think he ran the mile in about 5:00. Maybe I should run topless in short shorts? Mmm...maybe not. As it got to about 7:40, I drank some water, went to the bathroom and walked around the church a few times...jogged a bit...tried to warm up and stretch and all the stuff that makes you look like a real runner before a race. At that point my main worry was having to pee during the race, but I don't think anyone could tell. Finally, they had everyone line up at the starting line. The good thing about having my first race sponsored by a church is that it started with a prayer. The monsignor actually specifically asked God to watch over and be with all the new runners. Hey--that's me!!! This race wasn't chipped; they simply started the clock when the starting gun went off. I suspected this might be the case, so I wore my heart rate monitor to get an accurate time for myself. I started my clock as I crossed the starting line and took off. Of course, I was at the very back of the pack of runners, so my first few minutes were spent watching all those people--maybe a hundred or so--run away from me. Soon, though, I was passing people. The past couple of weeks I've been treating runnersworld.com like some sort of bible and all the "first race" articles said I would pass people. I did not believe them. Sure enough, though, I started passing people about half a mile in. I made myself slow down a couple of times to keep a steady pace, but when I passed the one-mile marker, I was at 10:30. That's a really fast pace for me! I don't think I believed the numbers at that point, but I fell in behind a very small Hispanic woman who was calling out periodically, "Give it to God!" Works for me. As we approached the halfway point, there was an aid station and the drink of water tasted really good! But then the mile two marker was at the bottom of an incline. When I drove the route yesterday, it looked like nothing. After two miles of running, it might as well have been Mt. Everest. I walked most of it. But then it got tricky. Like I told you guys, I had checked the route yesterday and they told us at the starting line to look for arrows painted on the streets to know where to turn. Well...this stretch of the race was alongside a park and the route dictated that we run all the way to the service road of the interstate highway. However! Half a block before the service road there was a street along the south side of the park and I noticed the ten or so people ahead of me turning there. I got confused…did they know something I didn't know? Did they change the route? Should I follow them or run the extra half block? I opted to keep running and sure enough…there were the arrows to turn on the service road. I said a quick prayer thanking God for keeping me on the straight and narrow and on I ran. Funny thing about that…even though the next turn brought another incline, I passed most of the people who had taken the short cut. That was the final stretch. I could look up the hill and see the finish line and most everyone who started the race had already finished. I let myself put on a bit of speed and crossed the finish line at 35:09. 35:09!!!!!!! It's my fastest time ever! That's an 11:19 pace and a 1:30 improvement over my last 3.1-mile run. Woohoo! I'm so stoked and even more than before, I feel really REALLY addicted to running. Can't wait for the next race! I'm really proud of myself for sticking with my training, for not sleeping through the alarm clock, for not taking the short cut and for running through the pain as I developed a ginormous blister on my left foot in the last half mile or so. And now there are two questions in my mind: 1) Is it possible to develop a taste for Power Bars? 2) Can one truly look good in the finish line photograph? I'm thinking the answer is no for both.

Hey, Stella. Woo Hoo! Way to go! High five! I'm so proud of you. That feeling you have, it's the runner's high. Enjoy it! That's the thing that makes running very very addictive. I bet you look good in the picture. Everyone does. Don't forget to paste a link once you have it. Again, congrats in finishing your first race! Always remember that you'll always run faster during the race because of the adrenaline, plus being around most runners add an extra motivation. My first half marathon, I ran in 8 mins 10 sec pace which I never thought I could do. But it almst feels like you're flying during a race. I love that feeling.

Stella--NICELY DONE!!!!!! To answer your questions--one does not eat a Power Bar for enjoyment. One eats it for the calories. I like them because they are durable, as in you can leave them in the car and won't melt. If you don't like them, find something else! personally, for a post swim snack before my ride back home, I like Reeces Fast Break. Race day photos... Some are good, some are not! After a few races, you learn to look for the cameras and can pose. Every once in a while, they will still catch you off guard. Actual finish line photos are a pot shot. Either smiling from ear to ear due to the sense of accomplishment or looking like you are about to die from giving it your all. I think I posted a link to my last race photos. The bike and run look great--I posed. The finish line, I was trying to hold off someone from my age group and give it all I had--and that's exactly what it looked like! Early morning long run for me. 10miles in just over 1:30. A bit slower than I'd like, but given it's the end of a very hard week, I'll take it.

Yeah Stellaluna! Awesome! Isn't it an awesome feeling to have worked so hard for so long, to beat your best time and to do it with a hole bunch of people who love doing the same! It really is a blast! Well, it was hard to get up this morning. My allergies have been bothering me all week. I figured I'd probably just take it a little easy on the run with the way I was feeling. Of course, once you show up, that goes out the window because there really is something addictive about running with a bunch of other people. There were 2 races going on at the same time: 2 mile (me) and 10K. We run the same course, but at a certain point, the 2 milers turn around and head back to the finish line. As I approached this point, I started counting runners - specifically the ladies. By the time I got to the turning point, I couldn't believe it - there were only about 6 ladies ahead of me (well, for the 2 mile. The 10K ladies were kicking my rear I'm sure!). It was an easy run. Literally only one small hill and the weather was perfect. As I neared the finish line, I was close behind another gal. We both started sprinting for the finish line and we finished neck and neck - I think she beat me "by a nose". It was fun to get cheered on by the small crowd at the finish line. Usually there isn't that close of a finish so we really made an impression! Anyway, I thought I'd stick around for the awards. I've never placed before although I usually do well. I thought I had a real chance at placing this time though - depending on which age division the 6 gals in front of me were. Unfortunately, I think my division usually has the fastest runners. I was hoping for 3rd though. I thought that would be really cool! Anyway, they are reading of the winners and they get to my division (women 30-34). They read the first place winner and I about fell over... It was ME! I got first for my division! I went up to get my ribbon and the guy handing them out said "Sure makes your sprint at the end worth it, huh!". Anyway, my time ended up being 17:15ish. I'll let you know when I get the official results - that usually takes about a week. I have no idea how many were in my division (probably not a lot), but there were at least 3 of us because they had 1st, 2nd & 3rd places.

Prairie--pick a race and DO IT! Nothing like a little motivation. I'm doing a half marathon next weekend. First one since October. I have the miles to back me up, but I'm still not sure how I'll do. Then, the following weekend, ds1 and I will be doing a 5K. I've done no speed workouts. My PR is 23:30. Not sure if I can even come close to that. Oh well. Main motivator is to have ds1 beat me, so remind him how fast he really is!

Providing I'm in town, I'm going to run a mile race on August 2. It's supposed to be a really fast course because most of it is downhill. The goodies are awesome: a singlet AND a windbreaker! Plus, champagne after. And this guy is going to be here to run it: http://www.onemilerunner.com/

If you've been following my posts, I've just been back to running for 3.5 months due to knee injury. From Apr to now, I've managed to increase my speed by cutting almost 5.5 mins per mile on average. I'm still not comfortable racing yet because I don't want to injure myself. I overtrained last year when I was training for the marathon, then one skiing accident and I couldn't run after that. It even sent me spiralling down to depression when I couldnt' run, and I'd never go back there again. I need to make sure I don't get injured before I start training for any race again. As it stands, I'm quite enjoying my daily runs, and my new love for cycling. I finally ran under a sub 10 min mile which I haven't done since last year. I think if I keep this up, I'd go back to my 7-8 min mile pace by the end of this year and will be doing some races. I was training for my a Boston qualifier when I got injured. Did 4.5 miles at 45.12.

OK. What you're seeing now is the re-worked photo. I hope it's clear enough for you. If not, I'll go and raise the pixel count 1 more time. I picked up the latest issue of Running Times magazine and a copy of Jeff Galloway's Book on Running yesterday. I found some drills in the magazine from Alberto Salazar which may help to increase my speed, as well as a training schedule in the book that I may use to get me to my next 5K goal - 38:00. I was so close to the 40:00 time a couple of weeks ago, that I'm going to go ahead and shoot for the 38:00 barrier on Aug. 30th. Saturday was a really good training day for me. I went over to the cemetery and drove through it again, this time using the GPS unit that my job has issued to me. My favorite route actually turns out to be 0.88 miles long, instead of the 0.8 that my odometer gave me. I checked out a couple of other loops that I can use as well, so now I've got a complete list of ways to go about training for this next race without getting bored with endless laps around the track. I ran 3.06 miles and only walked a little over a tenth of a mile - which is the farthest I've ever run! The sun was nice and warm, and there was a slight breeze blowing, so I took off my shirt and got a good bit of sun on my poor, white shoulders. No sunscreen, but I don't burn very easily, so I'm not worried about skin cancers. Wasn't worried about the time aspect on this one - I just wanted to get some endurance, and that was exactly what I got. YIPPEE!!! Duane
