Yesterday was a holiday at w***, so I had the day off. In celebration, I decided to ready the motorcycle for the season. Went to the parts store and picked up plugs, oil and filter. They didn't have the right filter, but one that cross-referenced might fit.

Changed the spark plugs...the tank has to be removed to get to them. It's been years since new plugs were installed. The head was littered with bits of dirt and gravel around the base of the old plugs, so I made sure to clean it off first with compressed air. If one of those pebbles goes down in the cylinder, it could burn a piston.

Put a small 4AH charger on the battery and a meter to keep an eye on the voltage.

Before changing the oil, I wanted to warm up the motor because it's better to drain the oil hot. You get more of the oil and gunk out that way. It's a '93 Honda Nighthawk 750. Only about 16000 miles if I remember right. But it's getting old and it took some considerable cranking...and then some starting fluid...still nothing.

Last year's gas still in it. I know for a fact it had stabilizer in it though.

Then my wife Tooshy came out to check up on me. I explained how it wouldn't start, gave it a crank to show her and it fired on one cylinder. Two more followed and then eventually a reluctant fourth popped off too. I told my wife that she is officially my lucky charm now.

Last year I purchased an infrared thermometer to check tire and brake temps on the trailer. I thought I'd use it to check exhaust temps and make sure all cylinders were warming up. Then the motor was run until the crank case was up to about 100F.

Checked all the lights and brakes.

Shut it down and drain the oil. Unscrew the oil filter and finagled it out from between the exhaust pipes. Compared the new filter with the old. The gasket and threads look right, but the new oil filter's body is too large in diameter and it won't fit between the pipes.

Take back the filter and get the right one at a different parts store.

Finished the oil change.

When I was cranking it earlier, the battery seemed kinda weak. The voltage was dropping off to 12V rather quickly when the starter was running. So I pulled the battery wires off and cleaned up the connections. After that it charged up at a slower rate. That's actually a good sign and I think the battery is going to be OK.

Oiled up the chain and took it out for a ride.

We are in clean up mode today, several bad storms and tornadoes hit our area Friday. Also have some neighbors out on the lake looking for their boats and other stuff that was blown away by the storms. At first glance of some of the debris, I'd guess a strong F2 or weak F3.

Yeah I saw on the radar maps that some strong storms were coming through down there. Looks like there's more today too. At least you're gettin' some rain out of it.

Hope everyone finds their boats.

Just good soft rain today, exactly what we need. Did have a boathouse float up in our cove, don't know who it belongs to, but I'll bet they'll come looking for it soon... it's a nice single slip, and they cost between $15,000 to $20,000.

It'd sure be nice to be able to contact the owner and let them know about it. Probably easier said than done.

Yeah, it's defiantly got me thinking that I'm going to screw or rivet a tag onto ours. There is no way to tell who it belongs to, no ID of any kind.

Started out rainy and messy, but ended up clear and cool. Nice afternoon, and I started on our flower garden this evening to destress. New house with no yard, I have a lot of gardening to do to get this place whipped into shape.

What did 'ya plant in the flower garden? Are you going to seed or sod a lawn? What type of grass?

Yesterday I ordered seeds for the garden from Burpee:

Sweet Pepper - Godfather
Marigolds - Chamelion
Pumpkin - Prizewinner
Canteloup - Ambrosia
Eggplant - Burpee Hybrid
Carrots - Touchon
Tomato - Brandy Boy
Tomato - Steak Sandwich
Coleus - Picture Perfect Salmon Pink (for the front of the house)
Sweet Corn - Triple Crown XP

Hopefully it will turn out better than last year, which was a complete loss from too much rain early in the season.

Seeded the lawn, a mix of fescue. Cheap, easy to grow, and doesn't require much TLC.

We planted several shrubs and perennial flowers as we had no landscaping. I planned on doing that myself to save the $$$... we went over budget on building, so I had to cut somewhere. Actually enjoy the work though. Visited several nurseries and found a guy who knows what he's selling and could help me out. I told him my problems of the front faces north, so it gets little sun, and I want something that I don't have to baby or take care of too much. So we planted some Indian Hawthorn for a bunch of flowers that just do their thing, then go dormant. After having taken care of a garden with over 200 plants and shrubs at our last house, I'm all about low maintenance lawns now.

Years ago, a friend had built a new house and I talked him into seeding the yard instead of sodding. Saved him a bundle and he loved how it turned out. But then he got divorced and lost it all.

Our house faces North too. That's why the Coleus this year. Also I have Hosta there and bushes...one Lilac.

Oh man, it's always cheaper to keep her.
We did the same thing on my parents house when we built it 3+- years ago. Sodded the front yard, and seeded the lake front part of the yard. A year later the seeded part grew and looks just as good as the sod! So I decided to be patient for a year and seed it, instant yard is expensive when you can get similar results with a little time.

I decided to take the weekend off and get some things done around the house. Plus it was a beautiful day on Saturday, about 75F.

Did a tuneup on the car...new plugs are wires. The plugs really didn't look bad, especially considering they've got about 120K miles on them. The plug wires were worn out though.

Pulled out the mower and went through the maintenance items...getting ready for the season. Now here's where the Snapper looks like it would have been a better design over the Craftsman. It looks like the Snapper to sharpen the blade all you have to do is put the whole mower on its end and remove the blade.

The Craftsmen design is essetially, in tractor terms is a 'belly mower'. (Even though it's not a lawn tractor, but a rear-engine mower.) In order to sharpen the blade, you have to remove the entire mower belly deck and slide it out.

Not quite as bad as it sounds, but there are about a dozen things to disconnect to get it out...and that actually went fairly well.

There are places in the manual that indicate where to lube with oil or grease. It was a little disappointing to find those places completely void of lubricant from the factory.

Then I noticed it could use a new air filter. So I headed out to find one and a new spark plug...easier said than done.

The auto parts store is closest, but when they didn't have it I headed for Sears. Now you'd think that since I bought the mower there that they'd have to filter in stock on the shelf...nope. They looked up the numbers though and said that I could order it...and indicated I'd have to pay shipping.

I told them I'd buy it somewhere cheaper.

After looking at other auto parts stores and Lowes, I finally found the air filter at Tractor Supply Corp. in stock on the shelf for $3.00 less than Sears wanted (not including shipping).

And the spark plug was another story. The original plug is a Champion RJ4C. Nobody can even cross reference it. (Didn't even bother asking Sears but it wasn't on the shelf.)

The Briggs and Stratton website, I can look up the engine by model number. They'll sell me a plug for it, but you can't see what the number on the plug is.

Finally after looking on the internet, I found an equivalent (RC12YC...or something like that) that is actually available. We'll see if it really is right though.

I hate it when they try to be so secretive about engine parts. Thankfully the internet has opened up most of the secretive world of obscure engine parts. Next time you go into that Sears, ask them if they can order a carburetor for the SX2300 diesel engine... or where can you get some anti-freeze for your rear engine mower?

Oh man, you should have known to check it before using it... especially if you bought it from a mall center Sears rather than a stand alone store/service center. When shipping mowers by the tractor trailer loads, they are shipped with no grease, oil, or batteries. Otherwise, it'll be classified as a "haz mat shipment". The teenage store clerk might have been told to put a battery in, but you can bet the snot-nosed kid didn't use his brain and even consider checking the mechanicals.

You're right there.

In fact if I remember right it was a snot nosed (gasp)...girl.

So I finally pulled the spark plug and replaced it. Guess what the original plug was? Not the RJ4C that was listed in the manual. Nope...it was the RC12YC.

Oh well...at least I know for sure that I have the right plug.

RJ... RC, they are both resister plugs. You'll do fine with the RC, that's a copper core plug. No need to waste the $$$ on platinum when it's just a small mower engine. It's not like you are looking for faster burn for pushing through the corners. Or are you?

Yeah, especially when it's probably going to get replaced every year anyway.

It's been raining here for the last few days. The weather is supposed to break tomorrow or the next day. Right now everything is soaking wet and muddy. At least the roof ain't leakin' anymore.

What a day, it's beautiful out and I'm in the dumps. Stuck here working from home today pounding on the computer doing non-profitable bookeeping stuff, some laundry, back to some marketing plans, and watching the spring day float by through the windows. At least my girls have ball games tonight, so I'll be out there on the field as 3rd base coach!

We're hoping to go to a Detroit Tigers game this year. This is their 10th season in the new stadium and I still haven't been there.

3rd base coach sounds like a lot of fun.

It's a blast! Our girls are finally putting the game together and understand the tactics. Was close... they were a head, we were a head, then they won by a few runs at their last up to bat before the time ran out. All good fun, we've got more games Friday and Saturday.

Most of the trees here haven't leafed out yet. Some are in blossom. The maples have been heavily dropping their leaf enclosures (all over the driveway). Soon the leaves will spread out, followed by the helicopter seeds. It's supposed to be around 80F today and tomorrow. Alas there won't be much time tonight though, and I'm w***ing overtime tomorrow.

We are in full bloom here. Thankfully, we are just about out of our "green daze"... (pollen on everything). Although it's going to be a nice weekend, and I would hate to be stuck indoors w***ing, at least you have a job to give you the opportunity to w**k on a nice weekend. While the real estate market is slow, I'm so thankful that job orders have been slowly yet steadily coming in and I still have w**k. Also, our new business is looking promising and I've had a lot of interest. Got lots to do this weekend between ball games, and filling out Gobment paperwork for permits and licenses. We'll be rolling out with a grand opening in a few weeks.

Our maple tree is finally leafing out. Looks like the lawn needs mowed again already.

Some of the seeds that came in (for the garden) are now incubating on the kitchen table. Need to finish getting the rest of them started. It keeps raining. There's no way I could possibly till the garden yet. But I'm not in a hurry. The las frost date here isn't until late May.

I looked the other day and we have asparagus ready to be harvested.

Asparagus? How do you grow that under 20 inches of snow?
I've been so darn bizzy lately, I haven't had time to set up our garden plot. However, with the last big rain washing away all the grass seed I just through out, I have broken down am getting bids for some Zoysia sod for the front lawn.
