ORIGINAL: rayofson We're hoping to go to a Detroit Tigers game this year. This is their 10th season in the new stadium and I still haven't been there. 3rd base coach sounds like a lot of fun. going to a TIGERS game? do you live up that way? I lived up there...growing up....I became an "economic refugee"/former resident in 1992 (not long after college), when I took a job in Raleigh, NC....then, i moved to Northern Arkansas (long story)....and, now, for the past 13 years, we've lived in Dallas. (after meeting my wife, we knew we had to move to a place where job opportunities were much more abundant)....but, the experience I gained there helped! I make it a point to see the Tigers at least once when they come to town to play the Rangers. It's almost like a "reunion" of former Michiganders....I'll stop and chat with anyone wearing a dark blue hat with a white "D" on the front. This year, though, the Tigers are coming to town only once (usually they make it around here twice a season)....and it's going to be July 27, 28 & 29....at game time the temperature will be around 105ish most likely! So, we'll see. The last time I made it up to Michigan was the summer of 1999. A cousin of mine was getting married, and I figured it would be a good opportunity for everyone in the family to meet my wife...and 18 month old daughter. And, everyone would be in ONE PLACE...in ONE ROOM.........i took the opportunity that weekend to take my wife and daughter to a game at the old ballpark (the last year they played ball there).....got some awesome pics of them there....the stadium I pretty much "grew up in"....(I have a pen & watercolor painting of old tiger stadium hanging up right here in my office).... One little bit of trivia: During the fall of 1984, when the Tigers were playing San Diego in the World Series, Kirk Gibson's mom was my teacher in "Speech" class in high school.....

Yes, we've lived in the Monroe area since 1986. I grew up in Nebraska, spent some time on a submarine, moved back home again, worked at a beef plant for less than a year and then moved here. You'd think that they would schedule the Texas games for the Tigers at the beginning of the season when it's too cold to play ball up here yet. We had gone to the old stadium a few times. It was a nice place. One time we had seats well underneath the overhang though. You couldn't see anything that popped up at all. Other than that I loved the old stadium. But I can understand needing a new one and I'm looking forward to finally going to the new ballpark. We did get tickets for Saturday vs. the Cleveland Indians...very good seats in section 120 handicapped, the lower section near first base. It's a shame though, how the old Tiger Stadium has been treated since then. They didn't find a real use for it or do any maintenance on in. The security gaurds were taking kick-backs to let people in who then stole or vandalized just about everything. Now it would probably be best to just tear it down.

Three years ago I think I planted nine aspargus roots. Only about three of them made it this far, so the quantity is not huge. Now if it would just quit raining long enough to dry things out enough to till the garden. I know okra is a southern specialty. And I do like many souther foods. Okra just isn't one of them. Perhaps it is in how it's prepared, but when I tried it, it was real slimy and I didn't care for it at all. And there aren't many foods that I don't like.

We got to the ballpark early and the main gate wasn't open yet. Our tickets were to be picked up at Will-Call and it was amazing how quickly that took. Then we killed some time looking through a gift shop. Before we knew it, the gates were open and the line was gone. Inside the park, we had the obligatory hot dog. After that we thought we'd look around the ballpark since we were early and had never been to the new park before. I ended up pushing the wheelchair all the way around the park, which really wasn't difficult at all. Then it was time to find our seats. We started out asking a consessions operator who directed us to an usher. The usher pointed us toward a set of doors that lead to an elevater that didn't go where we needed to go. Another usher directed us to guest services. They looked at our tickets and told me that we'd be somewhere else than where our tickets say. She pointed to three different sections we could sit in, neither of which were as good as our tickets. After I questioned that, she realized that I had purchased handicap seating to begin with and that our original seat numbers were correct. Then she pointed us toward an escalator that would get us to our seats. I said "An escalator for a wheelcair?!" She pointed us toward a wheelchair lift. Finally we had found the right way to get to our seats. Our seats were quite spectacular, right behind first base. There were a lot of foul balls that came near us...one about ten feet away. I kept a close eye on the game, especially with a right-handed batter to make sure that a ball didn't hit my wife. It was a close game, and for a while it looked like the home team was going to lose. But in the end, they pulled out a two-run win in an exciting game. The day was quite beautiful. The sun kept poking out on a partly cloudy 63F day. With the tickets on the first-base side, the sun was behind us, making it easy to watch the game. Hopefully there will be some pictures up soon.

What positions do they play? Does the pitcher take an at-bat or is there a DH?

My seedlings for the garden have begun to sprout. That's always a relief that at least something is growing. My wife will be pleased to get her kitchen table back whenever they get planted. Tonight I hope to start tilling the garden, but it might still be too wet. Tomorrow we're expecting more rain though.

For my birthday I got a trip computer for the bicycle. Installed it yesterday and it was pretty easy to setup. It has a magnetic pickup that detects when a magnet goes past that's on one of the wheel spokes. You input with the tire size into the unit and it calculates speed and distance off of that. Pretty cool.

Are there a lot of bats in the area? Good call on the flowers. Thanks for the reminder.

Are there a lot of bats in the area? Oh yes, bunches... and I like having them around to eat all the mosquitoes. Being on the lake we are in middle of bat heaven. Warm sunny days, plenty of roosting spots, plenty of water for the moms to make milk for the young, and lots and lots of bugs.

That all sounds good except the 'lots and lots of bugs' part.

We don't have a lot of bats around here, but the moquitoes are a different story. We do have Purple Martins and people put up Martin houses to attract them.
