Have some of those in our area too. I remember my great-grandmaw having hundreds of gourds hanging as martin condo communities in her fields. She also kept Ginny hens... whether friend or foe, there was absolutely no sneaking up to the back door.

Well good for her, we'll keep ya'll in our prayers. Short term pain, long term gain. A neighbor had to have a hip replacement, he's only 40something, and wishes he had done it sooner. I know the prospect is scary, but next year she'll be able to walk without pain. One thing I learned is do not let her try to be a hero and go without pain killers. My own wife did that this past summer after emergency gall bladder surgery, and it just about caused a trip back to the hospital. The DR will give her a prescription for plenty of meds, make sure she takes them BEFORE the last dose wears off.

Off to the ball park, have 2 games today.

Sounds like good advice. This has been a long time coming. Most places we take a wheelchair. If she's able to walk after this then that will be a big change in lifestyle for us.

We have camping plans on the 4th of July, so hopefully she'll be able to get in and out of the pickup and travel trailer by then. She's determined that she still wants to go. I guess I could always use the ramps and load her wheelchair into the pickup bed...kinda Beverly Hillbillies style.

She should be ok as long as I set the brakes on the wheelchair. Maybe I should use some straps.

Just don't use bungies... the back lash you receive from her would be faaaaarrrr worse than the back lash she'll receive from the truck bed.

Physical Therapy (PT) will be painful and grueling... but don't tell her that. Just know that you will have a lot of honey-do things to make her more comfortable. I don't know if she'll feel up to riding a long time in a truck and camping out by 7/4/09, but here's wishing, hoping, and sending good vibes that you will make your trip.

Well, did our annual tradition for Mother's Day... spent it at the ER.
Last year it was emergency gall surgery, this year DW fell on the brick porch steps at my brothers house. Banged up, bruised, and lopped off the top of her ear. Being the first big weekend holiday on the lake for the summer, there were a lot of injuries today in the ER. Took us 4 hours total at the hospital to get her ear stitched back together. What a messed up day, I'm beat. Not the way I wanted to start the week, got wayyyy too much work to stress over.

While waiting for the doctor, I called her boss and told them DW would not be in for work on Monday... then I told her what I did, and told her she WILL be taking a day off to relax.

Ouch! That had to hurt. How's she doing? You could tell people that she met Mike Tyson.

That's good. At least you won't be flying and have to get through security with an AK-47 sized chunk of metal in her leg.

I've got a plate in my wrist. It's titanium. Trying to think back that last time I flew somwhere and can't recall that it was a problem. The knee joint might be considerably more metal though. The model he had on his desk only showed metal on the surface at the end of the bones...less than I would have thought.

Hey TTW.

You know I've never tried brisket either. I can do the hot dogs and hamburgers and steaks though, and an occasional piece of chicken and I love those Kielbasa.

Brisket is big down in Texas though. I'm sure someone out there knows more about it than me, but I think you need a smoker for that not just a conventional BBQ grill. Which do you have?

The best brisket I've had was cooked dutch oven style... wrap the spiced meat up in several layers of foil, dig a hole in the ground, build a fire to build up a coal base, let the fire die down and put your meat on top, cover with a layer of dirt, build a camp fire on top and hang with the guys for a few hours. A few beers later, top the fire off with a little more wood and let it cook through the night.
Mmmm, you'll drool in your sleep thinking of a brisket breakfast!

Brisket is certainly best if smoked. There are a number of ways around the smoker only method though. If you have a way to provide indirect heat on a grill (gas or electric) and smoke you can have "smoked" meat. There are small boxes for wood chips to smoke with electric grills. For about $100.00 you can buy a small electric smoker. I have one of those and it works for small jobs.

You can also cook a good tasting brisket in the oven. Don't call it barbeque or the purists will have a field day with you. Same concept with smoking applies, low and slow. Cook at about 250 - 275 degrees for a number of hours. Season the brisket up overnight with your choice of rubs. We like to add Cajun seasoning to zip it up a bit. You can use liquid smoke for some flavor.

There really is nothing like a good barbeque brisket and we do have the best around here in the Lone Star State. If you're ever in the Ft. Worth area, Angelo's is a great place for bbq.

If anyone wants a complete receipe for oven brisket let me know.

The Food Network aired a BBQ challenge cookoff. I'm sure there's one every year. On one of them, one of the contestants used so much liquid smoke flavor that the judges couldn't get the taste out of their mouths well enough to properly judge the rest of the entrants. Needless to say...they didn't win.

Yuck I hate that fake smoke flavor stuff. If you can't or don't have time to slow cook in a smoker, tis better to spice it up and broil in the oven.
I also hate that fake potato flavor crispy stuff on some brands of french fries. Zaxbys fries are my favorite, spicy Orida style.

I use a cast iron skillet. Keep one area of the grill without charcoal so that you have a cooler spot to move the skillet if it gets too hot. Have you ever used a cast iron skillet before?

You can cook just about anything on the grill using tin foil... even pizza. If you want to try some different stuff, get a cheap cast iron dutch oven from WallyWorld. All you need is a coal base for the bottom, and put some coals on top, then time it as if you were baking at 350.

It's wasp season, time to carry a can of wash spray out in the field. I looked at 2 places yesterday, and almost got tagged several times by a single wasp starting a nest. It's hard this time of the year, because the new nest is so small, it's hard to see until you are in a position where you can't escape. Really hate those Ginny Wash, mean and put a hurtin' on ya'.

Up here we have paper wasps and yellow jackets. A few years ago, I had something going on with the insulation in the garage. When checking it out, I uncovered a yellow jacket nest about the size of a volleyball. It was bulging and moist. Got stung three times before realizing that there was a wasp nest in there. Then it seemed like the whole wall was buzzing. Came back with smoke, a long pole and double-fisted cans of spray and went to town.

I've been stung a bunch of times on the motorcycle. You look down and see a bee hanging off your arm by the stinger.

Uuuh, ouch! Never thought about that on a m-cycle. Used to eat a few bugs on a bicycle, but they were just slow harmless moths.
Have the same red paper wasp and yellow jackets here, but the yellow striped Ginny wasp are really aggressive! I usually find at least 2 yellow jacket nest a year, used to be highly allergic. But now, I've been stung so many times, it's just a wee bit painful and a little red that goes away in a few hours. Doesn't affect me nearly as bad, but still not fun.
