I don't understand why she would have done that because she is actually a very talented person and could have a good career by standing on her own merits. OK...number one, she's a 21 year old college student and no more mature than a typical 21-year-old in the US. Which means...not very mature. Number two... her mom is African-American and her dad is of Cuban descent, so she might identify culturally as much, or more so, with the Latino/Cuban community in Florida than the African-American. Number three...I've met plenty of African-American young people who are ignorant of "the history of their own people," and the history of the US period (and plenty of other young people who are ignorant of US history), and yes, it is a shame, but it's certainly not unusual.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with Buckfin on this one. It's not the ignorance, per se. It's just the whole concept of trying to take a movement that affected thousands (millions?) of lives, and equating it with one person's personal journey. It just seems a tad bit selfish. I'll tell you what this reminds me of: during Inspirational Week, the blogger for our local newspaper pointed out that nearly all of the contestants had sung songs about fulfilling individual desires. Nobody sang about helping mankind. The blogger blamed it on the modern attitude of "it's all about me." So in that sense, yes, Syesha is just reflecting her generation's attitude. That doesn't make it less depressing, though.

OK, well it's officially "tomorrow AM" so here's my take: The voters got it right this time. Jason had a number of issues...among them poor song choices the last several weeks and showing a lot of ignorance about a wider scope of music than his specific interests (not a good thing for an AI finalist). He also peaked early in the competition, which is the reason a lot of AI contestants get sent home.

Thank God Jason got sent home. We will now have the battle of the two David's unless we have a major surprise. Oh by the way, if anyone cares (and I don't) Chris Sligh's new CD is out. I better camp out and be the first in line at Wal-Mart if I want my copy (which I don't)

Jason stated that it was his inexperience that did him in. That is obviously the truth. However, it really bugs me that it was inexperience that got him eliminated on a show whose premise is finding unknown, "inexperienced" but talented young people. He obviously did not get the direction and mentoring that some others had. Not to mention that most of the others weren't completely unknown and were not inexperienced.

Do you think it's time to change a lot of the concept of Idol? As the contestants get younger & younger, I'm seeing that they do know a lot less of the music from previous generations & the judges can't deal w/ the reality of that. Since the cut-off is 30, seems to me the judges might need to be in that cut-off too. I'm tired of hearing "song choice, song choice, song choice." If the kids don't know the songs, then to put so much emphasis on styles & era is ridiculous. They can't even come close to something they don't know. I think in the end they would respect the judges if they were more like their peers rather than "old folks that don't know what they are talking about!" kd

On Dancing with the Stars the inexperienced, non-dancing stars are paired up with a professional dancer. Perhaps AI should pair up the contestants with a music professional as a mentor throughout the competition. They can help with song choice, arrangement, vocal coaching, etc.

He obviously did not get the direction and mentoring that some others had. Not to mention that most of the others weren't completely unknown and were not inexperienced. Here's the thing...one can have professional inexperience, but gain singing and performing experience through churches, schools, community theaters, etc. I know Jason is in a praise band, but did he ever take participate in community theater, or a school chorus? After his ALW performance, David Cook commented that he had a background in theater, (whether it was high school, college or community, he didn't specify). David A's family and Syesha's family obviously exposed them to different eras and genres of music. My kids know lots of songs from the 60's, 70's and 80's because they've been exposed to them from the time they were young. They know about musicals because they were exposed to them (a few live and others on DVD) as well. They know about different musical genres because both their dad and I have ecclectic musical taste and we made sure they were exposed to a lot of different types of music. They both took chorus in middle school; one took drama in high school; both took dance (one is very into it); and both have done years of church-based community musical theater. No, neither is interested in AI and if we were all being honest, they wouldn't qualify as the best of the best. The point I'm making is that these opportunities exist today...they haven't disappeared. If AI hopefuls have actually watched the show, they should KNOW it's a show where they will be required to perform songs from different eras and genres (if they are paying attention). Jason's problem involved as much ignorance as inexperience.

As for Jason going home, I'm glad. I am no longer voting for Syesha because of her comments the other night, so I guess it's David C. for me. David A is becoming more and more known as the one the judges are trying to push as the winner and that is an automatic turn-off in wanting to see him win.

David A has displayed just as much ignorance of music.

Chris Sligh's new CD is out. I better camp out and be the first in line at Wal-Mart if I want my copy (which I don't) I heard a demo and it wasn't all bad. It rocks slightly, i.e. safe for "family friendly" radio. But his voice sounds pretty good. I said back during the Beatles weeks that most of these kids have absolutely no clue about any song not recorded in the last 5 years. But that's the story with most of the kids I know. Nobody's taking the time to teach them, and radio stations are limited these days to one and only one genre, so they don't get exposed to anything outside of whatever they're favorite radio station plays. The clincher was when David A admitted he'd never heard any of the Beatles songs.

They can help with song choice, arrangement, vocal coaching, etc. Interesting that you mention that...because that's what Simon does on his own show The X-Factor. The judges are, like him, all music industry experts, and they take a group of contestants under their wing for the duration of the show. It's one of the reasons why I like it so much better than AI. The other reason is that there is no upper age limit. Therefore, you get many contestants over 30. Not once in the three years I watched that show did I ever see an older contestant with an attitude. They had already been out in the real world and didn't expect Britain to hand them success on a silver platter. It was quite moving to see at times. Speaking of attitude...Chris Sligh, was he the curly-haired guy from last season who was always mouthing off to the judges? The one who made that Teletubbies remark to Simon? Then put me on the list of people who's eager to line up for his album.

anyone else hear about the idol contestant who was sending text messages to young boys and is now accused of child molestation? here is the story... Such is the case with Brooklyn school volunteer and American Idol reject Colin Leahy, 23, who allegedly maintained a relationship with a 12-year-old male student through text messages at PS 236 http://mcbrooklyn.blogspot.com/2008/05/brooklyn-american-idol-reject-accused.html

ORIGINAL: 2shaye David A - he will win and tank. The judges will be happy, the little girls will be happy, but those who actually purchase the albums will not support him. He'll be a one hit wonder and fade off into Disney mania where he belongs. Kind of like what happened with Jordin Sparks huh? I don't have anything against David A. personally (I don't think he's terrible, but I don't think he's super great either); I guess one of ther reasons I'm hoping David C. or Syesha wins is that the judges (IMO) are heavily pushing him (kinda like how they did with Fantasia when she wasn't all that great).
