Kimmie, that is heart-wrenching. I don't understand it at all either.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, besides accepting the position of secretary for the PTA I had also told the president that I would help out at the concession stand for the first dance of the year (which was Friday afternoon). Now, I am a very shy, easily intimidated person. But something is definitely changing in me. I had soooo much fun!!! I did most of it by myself because the president didn't show up until 45 minutes before it was over. I wasn't embarassed or stressed or anything. And there were times I had at least 20 kids wanting to buy something. Who knew jr high kids could be so fun!

I'm not easily intimidated at all, but a bunch of teens would definitely put me out of my element.

At work the other day one of the receptionists came and got me to tell someone who was using the computers for the wrong purposes to come out the front and explain to him what they were there for.

I asked her later what made her think I was a good person to do that. Her comment was, "Well, you did it and he listened didn't he?"

Since when did I become the brave soul that gets to do the nasty jobs?

LOL, Kylie!!

Acutally, it wasn't the teens that intimidated me. It's more authority figures, like teachers, or strong people in general. I'm a very meek and mild and quiet person. I must be changing, though, because when the PTA president finally showed up I wasn't shy at all. We discussed our plans for the PTA and I had no problem whatsoever voicing my opinions and ideas. It was pretty cool!

Bumping this thread up.

I am working on getting some pictures to show you. I also worked on a flyer to give to one of my servers to take to another town for me. It has taken me all evening to work on the flyer. Advertising is just not my cup o' tea.

Okay, here they are. If if asks you for a password it is password.

Flyer I made for advertising.

Garlic and herb rigatoni with spicy italian sausage.

Traditional spaghetti marina.

Pesto and tomato tortellini.

Garlic Roasted Eggplant.

Focaccia dough rising. That's a whole lot o' dough!!

Ryan being goofy.

A view of part of the dining area.

One of my center pieces.

Okay, I think that's good for now! I hope the links work. These are the only pics of the food I have so far. I will be taking more as I go. I'd like to get the whole menu captured eventually.

Glad to see you bumped the thread, Nicole! I was just coming to dig it up myself!

I had an idea for a ministry at my church and wanted to get y'all's input and advice. The topic of cooking ahead and meal prep while working comes up here alot and the more I talk to my friends that are Work Outside the Home Moms, it's definitely a concern of their's too.

I would love to start a "Busy Ladies Supper Club." It would be a group that would meet once a month. We'd start the meeting with a devotion/Bible Study time, then dive in an cook several meals for the freezer. I should be able to arrange use of the church kitchen for prep- that would allow us to have a large group working together because it's a large commercial-grade kitchen. We could also set up tables in the gym for assembly. Of course, the focus would be Work Outside the Home moms, but we'd invite and encourage any ladies that wanted to join us.

So, here are some of the ideas that I have rattling around my head regarding it:

Food Acquisitions Options:

  • Provide each woman with a shopping list and they buy their own groceries for cooking day (pros: easier for the organizers, allows women to customize a bit to suit their family tastes cons: would make mixing foods for mass prep more difficult, does not allow for the advantages of bulk purchasing
  • Divvy up the list amongst the women- say one lady buys 10 pounds of ground beef, another buys 10 pounds of potatoes and 5 pounds of rice (pros: easier for the organizers, allows for bulk purchasing cons: hard to divvy it up economically equally, what if one of the ladies is late or can't show up that day?)
  • Have everyone contribute money before hand then have designated shoppers that go out and buy all the food for cooking day (pros: allows for optimal bulk purchasing, removes stress from participants because they don't have to go shopping, no need to worry about missing ingredients because someone didn't show, bulk cooking made easy because we all have the same stuff cons: more work intensive for organizers because they now have to add a HUGE shopping day to their month, collecting of money, what if one of the ladies pays but can't/doesn't come to cooking day?

We have a couple of licensed nutritionists in our church family. I'm thinking of approaching them and seeing if they would be willing to help with menu planning. So, what do y'all think? Is this a ministry you would want to be involved in if it were offered at your church? Any favorite once-a-month cookbooks you would recommend for extra advice and help?

I love it

If a woman couldn't make it - would you have space to assemble her meals and store it?

Are you thinking of 25 pans of lasanga? Quart jars of soup for everyone. Bread dough to freeze?

I'm thinking about pans. I may want two 8" square pans for my family and you may want a 9x13 pan. If you plan and purchase ahead of time, there is uniformity if you buy cheap pans as well.

As a 'bonus' - leftover food can be donated to needy families in the church. You know - we have enough hamburger to make a loaf pan of lasanga, let's give it to the that newly widowed fellow.

The ministry aspect was something that really struck me too. We could plan to have "extras" and take them to families in the church that need meals.

I'm thinking to start with our goal would be somewhere between 5-10 meals. That's enough to make it worthwhile for participates, everyone should have enough room in their freezer, and it's small enough to give us an idea how future sessions would go.

You could do a little of both too...

Buy some stuff, but not others. I'm thinking, bring 1 cup shreadded cheese for the casserole, but the noodles and sauce will be there.

And, you could do stone soup and let everyone bring 2 cups of a veggie to contribute.

Looking at that post - I realize it is not clear. What I meant was even if the organizer or volunteer did the 'big' shopping, a shopping list could go out for participants as well. For example, I could bring in a bag of our family's favorite noodles for the casserole and the organizer wouldn't need to carry in a case of noodles. If it was 5-6 items, they could pick things up if they forget.

Could, possibly, maybe....

I came in to ask the age old question - why can't I call off of work? I feel icky. I'm tired and my head hurts and my tummy hurts and I don't want to be here - so why am I?

Oh, because my desk is a mess - the outside contractor who was supposed to give me an oral (or written) report yesterday at 3 spent 45 minutes ahead of time telling me he couldn't do it at 3 and then didn't come to my office or call. At 3:15 I went to his office and he said he moved the meeting since the information was there.

Let me sum this up. He was suppose to say that "during shutdown we did X, Y, & Z complete and finish 1, 2 & 3 pending items. I haven't done any reports, but will get the report for #1 to you by next Thursday and try to get the rest to you by the following Thursday."

What did he do? Spend 45 minutes to say that he did work without properly identifying the X, Y, & Z parts. (he used nicknames). Told me he had a list on the wall that I could copy if I really wanted it. He wasn't doing any reports this week and only one next week and he was doing the most important one, rather than the first one finished or the most past due one. And then, went on about another project, where he told me AGAIN, how other plants do it, what was wrong with how we do it, how I ought to hire someone to fix it and his company would send someone if we wanted. This project is the reason the reports were going to wait, but the explaination was long and redundant.

IMO, he is sitting on those reports until we do what he wants - we have them electronically, not physically. I could print them, but they are already sitting on a table, with hand written notes.

And, I leave at 3:30. Off the clock! And he kept me til 4pm. I have no real report, I can't verify information with him because he works 4-10's and won't be in until Monday.

Not happy at all...all he had to do was COPY THE LIST he had on the wall before he walked into the office, tell me our mutual supervisor reprioritized his workload to 1-2-3 and say he'd see me next week. Seriously. It is a formality. And it is my responsibilty and I can't supervise him well enough to get what we need because I have real leg to stand on except saying 'I need it'

Nicole!! I sooooo want some of that Garlic and Herb Rigatoni!!! Everything looks fabulous!!!!

Kat...what a WONDERFUL idea! I kinda like the idea of the organizers buying everything. It seems it would make it cheaper and more coordinated. Maybe you can give out the recipes and let the participants know what it is the organizers are buying and if they want to bring something extra to put in their families stuff they can. Take lasagna for example. If their family likes sausage in it, then they can bring their own sausage. They can bring stuff to personalize it for their own families. And maybe they can bring the pans, too. That way they can make the amount they want.

Momma-bee....Ugh!!!!!!! What a pain!!!!
........................................................................................

I've been home all week on vacation. It's been wonderful!!!! I've cleaned/straightened/purged my bedroom closet, the hall closet, the bathroom closet and medicine chest, the pots/pans cupboard and the tupperware cupboard!!! It's all so nice now! And I've gotten rid of a TON of stuff!!!

I don't know what's gotten into me lately. I'm on the verge of volunteering to be in charge of our mobilehome parks rummage sale. No one else has volunteered. This is soooooo unlike me, lol!! I think alot of it has to do with the fact that I'm not drinking anymore. I don't feel like I have anything to hide anymore so I'm taking steps out there!!

Today I have to do the grocery shopping and trim my yuccas. I'd also like to pull out the decorations for fall and get them up.

MBee, that's a drag!!!

I have my whole crew home again. Thursday was a little interesting getting to work on time (J and X flew home Wednesday), but by Friday morning we were back into the morning routine again.

And now J and X have a space on the school bus to get home each afternoon, so I won't have to be dealing with them coming home in taxis from school which is a huge weight off my shoulders.

Today's my sixth anniversary working at my church! I'm so blessed to be employed here. Just taking a moment in the midst of the flurry and stress to remind myself how much the Lord has blessed me by placing me here!

Due to circumstances beyond our control - the contractor has to get things done the way I want because he has no choice.

I'm supposed to lead him to do it right, he isn't following. He cited so-n-so as a reason. I went to so-n-so and said that they missed a meeting but it was best that they didn't because it was non-productive and relayed what was said without using so-n-so's name. You know, contractor said he would do this, and that, and the other (my stuff) could wait.

So-n-so called the contractor and redirected his work and called me and said that contractor would be working on it this week and would get them all done. Contractor called and said he would be working on it today and would only be doing one, per so-n-so's orders. I said I need EVERYTHING and he told me that I can't tell him what to do.

I tried to explain, as a FRIEND, that I look bad and the only reason I can give is him and he said that I should just 'get off his back' about the reports. I don't know if that was a joke or not.

What to do?

Who is actually in charge? You or "so-and-so"? Who does the contractor report/answer to? Sounds to me like you need to have a face-to-face with the contractor and so-and-so to discuss who's on first and what's on second. So to speak!

I am in charge of the inspection records. Procedure is the records cannot be updated until the report is received and accepted. The contractor is responsible for doing the inspection and issuing the report and then so-n-so accepts or rejects the reports. I change the dates when the report is issued because it is seldom rejected and I would just go back and add the necessary notes.

I issue the updated report once a month.

In the spring, we found that my report showed several items out of compliance that folks 'knew' were done. At that point we started a push to get caught up for a review and we were pretty good.

We also came up with the following solutions. 1) It is my responsiblity to get the reports or know why I haven't. For example, we had an item that had to be completed by scaffolding and we were waiting until it was going to be placed for a scheduled repair. The inspection was started in June, but wasn't finished until September. This was fine because it wasn't due until October. 2) We would meet weekly to review progress and problems. 3) Our goal was to have the report on the second Thursday after the work was done. 4) I was supposed to 'dog' them until I got them.

Contraction knew about 1, 2, & 3 and figured out 4 pretty quick. So-n-so signs the work orders and purchase orders and is pushing more work onto the contractor and everyone is putting the reports on the back burner. And, work is weather dependent. It does not make sense to sit inside on a nice day doing paperwork because you can't inspect outside in the rain.

Yesterday, I got a call from so-n-so asking if my spreadsheet was up-to-date and it is. He pointed out it hasn't been updated since the end of August and asked why I didn't have shutdown info on it. The answer is I didn't get anything yet. We had the meetings and they gave their reasons - I relayed them to so-n-so and they made sense (it was shutdown and they were BUSY) but no longer valid.

Last weeks meeting was a fiasco. The contractor basically said that he didn't see any sense in meeting if so-n-so isn't there and gave me no info. But, I was charged with representing so-n-so.

I guess the contractor was 'chewed out' yesterday and told to stay in his office until the reports are caught up.

I just hate playing politics. Yesterday morning, so-n-so told me that the contractor wasn't allowed to do any work until the reports were done. I called the contractor and he said that so-n-so said one specific report. I tried hinting around and said I really needed ALL of them and thought he would be able to get to them this week and I got a lecture on who signs his work orders. Then, I was accused of tattling on him since he got chewed out. Either this is high school or work. If it is work, do it. If it is high school, for goodness sakes, be my buddy, my friend, my pal and do your part of the group project....

I had a weird day at work today. Normally I have about 15 - 20 appts to get through. Today I saw five people for appts, two of those I couldn't even do any paperwork with, but I was so busy out the front of the office that I spent almost two hours away from my desk.

I also took off early because X had to have Xrays. Apparently she's constipated.

It sure doesn't hurt.

BigBee and Poppa are camping out for boy scouts tonight and tomorrow. Lows in the 30's. Meanwhile, BigBee is also helping with a haunted hay ride for a different Scout unit and I need to take him to camp both of those nights.
