Thank you Kara, that makes me feel better. I've lost a lot of weight since Nadia, so that should help. Please pray for me tomorrow ladies. I want to be bold for the benefit of this child and myself, but I also want to maintain a Christ-like witness. It's going to be hard. But Christ stood up for those who had no voice right?

I'm so sorry that you're having to go through this ... unfortunately, the quote above is what SO MANY PEOPLE are going through in the US with regards to homebirthing or VBACing or whatever. I've never been so glad to live in Ontario, where my midwife is covered by my universal health insurance and I can choose to birth at home or in a hospital - and in both places have an experienced, regulated, professional attendant.

I have no problem practicing "civil disobedience" when it comes to this issue. Homebirth is legal, yet the gov. won't allow us to have a trained midwife to assist during that birth? That's more dangerous than the "supposed" danger of midwives (I'm not against unassisted - I just like someone around who knows what they're doing). Women who are dead set on having a homebirth will continue to do it - it's actually in the gov.'s best interest to change the laws so that trained midwives are accessible. It's really ridiculous.
On the "who delivered the baby" thing - I don't know about other states, but in NC, the person who cut the cord is the person who's name is put on the birth certificate as delivering the baby. Also, you can have your hubby catch. The midwife is right there helping in case of problems of course, but it is more than safe for hubby to catch, or for you to catch the baby yourself even. Both are possible 
Side note - I am taking a long break from CW - I was tempted into lurking which is why I ended up posting here about one of my "pet causes". I won't be posting for awhile, and will either post or have someone post for me in Oct. when the baby arrives. Just thought I'd let y'all know

To be honest, I don't think docs and midwives ever deliver babies unless they were pregnant with them themselves  Thank you...but I did the work! LOL

I have a question about the mess involved in a home birth. I know the water breaks at some point during labor and you bleed after the baby is born, but what about the rest of the time?
I plan to move around the house during labor in our bathroom, bedroom, and living room, and have the pool set up in the dining room. Do I need to put something down in all of those rooms? We were going to have a plastic sheet on the bed covered with an old sheet, a cheap vinyl table cloth on the bedroom floor, a tarp under the pool, and chux pads to put down if I sit somewhere. Is that enough?

Emily...I can't say about what exactly to do...depends on what your house layout is, what the flooring is, and where you feel most comfortable laboring.....however I can say that some labors/births are quite messy and some aren't. It really depends on the baby though. Sometimes there is what seems like a TON of amniotic fluid that gushes out all at once...sometimes it drizzles out in little amounts....sometimes you don't have as much as other times so it won't seem like a lot if you have had a lot before. So that mess just really depends on the baby. As far as birth mess, it's usually not anything that a half a dozen (or so, maximum) towels under you couldn't clean up pretty easily. My B/SIL have had their two at home, unassisted....their first was born in a place with cement floors that were stained and polished, so it was easy to clean up. For their second they had bought a house with carpet and hadn't pulled it up yet, so they stayed in their bathroom (with a huge soaker tub with jets) or in their bedroom (where they covered the carpet with plastic).

Our house has carpet every where except the kitchen, dining room, and bathrooms.
So are you saying it could be messy the whole time or it could be messy just when the water breaks and the baby come out?

Depends on how your water breaks mostly....if it is a gush, or a trickle, or a stream...lol.

Emily, my water broke at the beginning of labor, it was like a 'blup' of fluid between my legs. Didn't even run down, but I did get to the potty soon enough to get it in there. I wore a poise pad to the hospital and then when I wanted to walk around during labor they asked me to wear one of their pp pads. Worked really well. Other than that, I had a chux pad under me. If you are up right, the baby's head should act as a stopper, and maybe you'll have just a trickle or nothing at all from the initial burst. If you are laying down, though, you could have a bigger mess. But keep in mind, it's clear, it won't stain and it shouldn't stink. It's not like getting out urine or something.

I remember my first home birth, delivering at our midwife's rental home. It was a really nice house that they were fixing up, and it had brand new carpet. I did a lot of walking that day. They had a chux pad under me, and they helped me with that. If there was a mess I never saw it. The midwives are wonderful about keeping things cleaned up.

I have good news!! My doula told me there is a hb mw that is a cnm, she works under a doc, but does hb!! And, incidentally, water births!! She would be so legal. Hubby is up for it. My doula is also going to contact a different doula that has worked with the midwives in this other practice I am looking at and let me know about them. I have two viable options. And my doula is willing to go where I go. Homebirth or hospital. YAY!!
Now, what do I do with my then three year old? Good grief, when did that happen? And if I do do a hb, what do I need to have on hand to be ready?
Isn't this exciting? I might get a homebirth!!!

it *shouldn't* be colored, but if the baby has gone to the bathroom inside (which is usually a sign of trauma or of being very late) then it will stink and be a color that could stain.

Kathryn - how exciting!!! I hope it all works out for you!! Wuhoo, homebirth!!!
ETA: If you are birthing with a hb m/w, I'm sure she'll give you a list of things to have on hand! As for Nadia, you do the same thing with her that you were planning to do if going to the hospital - have someone to watch her! We're supposed to have it all ready by 4 weeks before the due date - people, that's 3 weeks from now!!! 
Emily - my CBE was saying that when your water breaks either before or during labour, it's normally just the little sac of fluid that's in front of baby's head (at least if baby's engaged), otherwise, it flows until baby's head acts as a stopper. She said when you change positions and such, there will be a little leaky and trickling, but that it won't be gushing the whole time =) Chux pads and some towels should be enough, I would think. Although if you have carpet everywhere, you might want to lay down some plastic in the route you'll be walking =)

Sarah reminded me of our CBE Dvd we watched.. she says on there about water breaking..
Sit down, check the time, call the Dr.
and then added, Green means GO.
as in, meconium in the sac should show as green fluid, she said pea soup. SO in her eyes, Green fluids mean GO to L&D.
So now everytime I say "Green means Go" like to a guy in front of me at a stop light Jeremy always chuckles.
You guys got me thinking about Chux pads.. will ask over in pregnancy thread.

yup...it's green like pea soup...that's a good way to put it....and it STINKS!!!!! If you have that, then like I said, there is a problem...you need to get to the hospital and get checked. I am all for natural birth and home birth, but in case things like that happen you need to be prepared to get to a hospital or be checked by a qualified individual. If baby has gone to the bathroom inside then when he/she is born they can't let them breathe until they make sure it is all out of their air passages...breathing it in could be pretty bad news. (btw...this happened with my first)

Well, here's the thing about Nadia. We were going to call a parishioner who lives like two blocks from us to come watch her. Then call my in laws to come relieve the lady and continue to watch Nadia. I don't know how my fil would be around me mooing and oooooing. My mil might be the tad bit interested. You know, Nadia might be interested too. Hmmm. I dunno. A three year old???

Oh, Kathryn! That is wonderful news. Sounds like one of those God moments where you know He had it all under control even while we were worried there for a bit. LOVE those!
What to do with your three year old? I'd get someone to come stay with her at your house and make her part of the whole experience. You want someone to stay with her if you can though because then your husband can focus on you and the other person can take care of Nadia if she does need to be taken somewhere else for some reason.
We're planning on Noah and Hannah being at this birth...they'll be 8.5 and 3.5 then. I am absolutely excited that they will be there and after last time having Noah there, am not the least bit worried about it. I have a great support person who is willing to be there for them and I know I won't have to think about them at all. I think that is key to it being a good experience...you not having to be in Mommy mode while you're in labor.

Kathryn, once I woke Brandon up (with my noisemaking, lol), he watched the whole thing, fascinated, and he was 2.5. We had the neighbor lady come over and sit with him. My mom would have been far too petrified.
A word to you homebirthers: Do not assume you will be giving birth in your bedroom. That was my assumption, but while in labor, my bedroom sounded awful to me, and I ended up giving birth in front of the couch in the living room.

That's funny, Jenny, I've always envisioned kinda propping myself up on the edge of the couch with my elbows and bum down. Hmmm...
I'd really have to think about who to get if we do do a homebirth. There is one lady at church who does L&D and Nadia loves her. I wonder what she would think. She's offered to bring over her doppler anytime I want to hear the baby.

True! I gave birth in the bedroom twice, and once in the livingroom, and once in the kitchen!
