Wouldn't these come back to haunt the eater and the pew mates during the service?

I can't think of any better way to worship the LORD.

And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up: And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground.
(Nehemiah 8:5-6)

This was outdoors too.

I see unnecessary distractions as disrespectful, but understand others may not. Infirmities get a pass.

IMO, no food/drink is best, infant/infirm exceptions only.

Nah, our church service is only about 1.5 hours long, not quite long enough to haunt a body

I find it bizarre that anyone should mind anyone else drinking anything during the service.

In fact, why is anyone even looking at anyone else during the service in a critical way? I'd regard it as something wrong with me if I was negatively focussing on someone else.

I don't get the bit about distractions - a cough or sneeze is more distracting than someone having a sip of water or coffee, and I don't see any posts wanting to ban those!

This morning, the most distracting thing in the service was the youth pastor's 3 month old baby throwing up on the floor and the young people cracking up with laughter. I didn't notice anyone suggesting a ban on babies in church (or young people laughing).

Bottles of water is common practice in our church, especially for those singing and speaking. No one has a problem with it.

They do ask that coffee and other beverages be consumed in the social hall mostly because of the carpeting and fabric pews in the main sanctuary. I perfectly understand that...it's expensive to have those things cleaned, and they keep the social hall open and accessible(with speakers) for those who can't manage to get through an hour and half without coffee or soda.

Actually, I've seen that suggested here.

Our "Sanctuary" doubles as the fellowship hall. We have an octogon shaped foyer and then there's a kitchen with a serving counter to the foyer and the sanctuary. When we have a church dinner they can transform the sanctuary to a dining hall in about 10 mins. So, since we have meals in there food is not a problem. People drink coffee, tea, hot chocolate, lemonade during SS but I've only seen water during church.

Funny how I came across this topic now!! Today, I was about to bring a styrofoam cup of hot chocolate into the sanctuary at church when one of the ushers stopped me, saying he had to be "mean" to me, but I couldn't bring in the cup! LOL So I just finished it off in the foyer before going in.
He was just concerned that I don't spill it on the pew cushions. But me and one of my friends actually saw another person coming in a few minutes later with an open cup!! Hey--how did HE get past the ushers with that??

But I don't think drinking water during church should be a problem if you have a sealed bottle or a cup with a spill-proof lid. If an usher or someone has concerns about it, you should tell them that you have a medical condition that requires you to drink water to prevent dry mouth.

Not sure why you'd want to be eating breakfast during a church service, seems pretty disrespectful to me.........
Our God is an awesome God and we should be very carefull how we worship Him.

My opinion............

Used to go to a church that had donuts and bagels. No one blinked. We eat breakfast at home and God isthere just as much as he is in a church building.

Don't you realize that God wants you to be miserable during church service!?!?!

Seriously, and setting aside out of context Scriptures, consider putting things in proper perspective:

Church services where people sit passively watching an event is relatively modern construct. We see a model-both Biblically and historically-of people coming together in a more "social" atmosphere, centering gathering around a meal.

In far too many cases, modern Sunday worship is focused more on the people in charge than on the Lord. Oh, they say it's all about Jesus. But let anything come up that doesn't fit into their rules and itinerary...

Our awesome God also commanded us to worship Him through a number of feasts and food-centered activities!

Can you go an hour and a half without water?

Is that too much to ask?

The crinkling of a plastic water bottle...the slurping and smacking....it sure could be a distraction...though like I said earlier it shouldn't be. We are to be kind afterall and people's selfishness and ignorance we should be tolerant of...at least for a while.

Its a matter of carnality, I think in most cases. I don't think many people are so dehydrated coming into church they need water...its a comfort thing and I don't see why people can't wait a few minutes until the service is over.

Like I said I cleaned the church for a few years...there were candy bar wrappers and crumbs and toys and paper and crayons and tissues and clothes and bibles and all kinds of things.

It would be my opinion of your child cannot stay quiet during the service they should not be there. Most churches have child care and our church has seperate child rooms that are behind a glass where the parents can see the service and hear it but we cannot hear the babies. ( Its also cool to walk by and see all the little babies )

Its not a sin, so to speak, to bring water or drinks or unruly kids, or to talk during the service, but it sure...is rude. I do believe the sanctuary is a special place and should be treated with respect.

My pastor was speaking of this very issue just a couple weeks ago. He was commenting that he had cleaned the toilet when he came in on Sunday morning and felt a little frustrated that those who were supposed to clean it didn't. Then he said God just sort of dropped a thought into his head. "If there weren't people here using the restroom, there wouldn't be any need to clean it." That got him back on track

If there aren't messes to clean up, trash left in the hymnal racks and paper stuffed in the communion cup holders there's probably no one there doing anything. If you clean the church, clean it thanking God that there's a mess to clean because, apparently, you're ministering to someone. JMO

I agree. I liked cleaning the church and certainly...people's habits gave me "job security".

My water bottle doesn't make any noise when I take off the cap and drink from it.

Which would you prefer someone to take a sip of water or for someone to cough so hard their face turns red and people wonder if 911 should be called?

My DH and I have cleaned churches too. We weren't paid for it either. At one point, my DH was on his back under the pews scraping off the gum that had been "deposited".

When I was pregnant an hour and a half without water would have prevented me from going to church and not being able to have my baby with me now would also keep me at home.

I'm thankful we have a church that embraces family and physical needs.

I find it bizarre that anyone should mind anyone else drinking anything during the service.
When my DW's home congregation (Assy of God) built a new building, there was a sizable group of older members that wanted an all out ban on anything consumable even being brought into the sancutary. They even wanted communion to be done in the SS classrooms to not violate the "sanctity" of the sanctuary. I believe they got voted down but they were not happy and very vocal about it.

Tell that to the pastors who have water bottles or cups on the podium. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

We heard a great sermon yesterday on being a church with walls or a chruch with windows, open to the world. It consisted of an illustration of a window with 9 panes and each pane had something different it.
Here are what the panes said.
1.love autentically,2.worship passionately 3.go intentionally and bring the good news.
4. serve humbly 5. love extravagantly 6. give generously 7. trust ruthlessly 8. connect deeply 9. speak openly of the Lord

The pastor said we are a glimpse of God to the world. The usher telling you that you couldn't take the cup in wasn't wrong in and of itself but what if you were a new person, unsaved and nervous, what glimpse of God would that be to you.
I'm blessed that at our church, and yes we have a brand new church with carpeting and fabric covered chairs, it is preached over and over that we love people and we are a grace giving church. We have tons of little ones and yes they spill and throw up and make huge messes and we did get rid of the hot chocalate after watching the little ones carrying hot cups of it without lids. We didn't say anything, just hid the hot chocolate mix.

I'm a senior citizen and yes sometimes the crying babies are distracting but they are in church and their parents are bringing them every Sunday so the blessing far outwieghs the distraction. And we have sound proof nursery. But not all parents feel comfortable leaving their infants there.
Besides you can always look before you sit down and not sit by the babies.

I wasn't paid to clean the church.

As I stated earlier. most people can go an hour and a half without a drink of water and the exceptions would, of course, be medical reasons.

I don't think respecting the sanctuary would turn people off. All relationships have rules and respecting something is healthy.

I've gone now more than ten years to church and have never carried a drink into the sanctuary. I have had two throat surgeries and had to have my throat moist as it healed so I took candy or cough drops....opening them only when there was enough noise so I could....

and I was saved in a pentacostal style church so it wasn't exactly quiet anyways, but I do believe we should respect the process going on...worship of our Lord and if possible, put off drinking water or whatever for an hour and a half isn't that much of a sacrifce.

I mean...have you fasted? What is a fast? If you have no medical reason to have a drink constantly, respect the sanctuary and go worship God without all of your comforts.

Please....tell me the reason why anyone would have a cell phone in church...let alone have it on?

Why do people socialize during the sermon?

Why are the younger children chased around the sanctuary, can't sit still and playing with toys?

What do people go to church to do?

Because the take the bus to church. And the use it just in case the need a ride home due to weather.I never have my cell phone in church but there are reasons...Mother and or Parents who loave their children in the Nursery. leave them on just in case their infan is inconsolble (sp?). It does not have to be put on rin it can be put on vibrate and they wera it on them.

each church is different. My church is tolerant of it. My church i used to attend( which i dont because I moved), I doubt is too high on it. I think it depends on what the Pastor mandates. I wouldnt suggest bringing in a six pack of Coke and passin it out and eating a bag of chips too while the service is going on. You can be discrete and reverent about it. Certainly if a medical conditions calls for necessary consumption then by all means.

Our church services are held in a "sanctuary" also, but we have an over-flow area right outside, and the sides of the sanctuary have doors that can be opened up. Although drinks and food are discouraged "inside" the sanctuary (because it's carpeted and they don't want crumbs or spillage that will attract cockroaches), the outside seating area has no such regulation.
