Question: What is an accent wall?

I too am renting, but they said I can do what I want as long as I don't paint over her quilted wall. *shudders* I understand the sentiment behind it, but it's hideous. I thought maybe we could cover it with a dark cloth to match the walls when I paint.

I know nothing about redecorating so a bunch of my girlfriend's are going to pick out colours (based on what I like) and even look into covering my couch. I also want to turn my 'catch all' room into a TV room and the living room into a sitting room so that would mean purchasing more furniture, but I can buy a couch and a couple of chairs pretty cheap, right?

My guy friend's are going to paint the walls for me so that's a good thing.

Now I just have to wait for my tax return to get here! LOL!!!

Do you like a bold print like THIS?

I really like your table & chairs...they are black, right? If you wanted to use a wamer color in the seats you could do something like THIS

I LOVE that first print!! So classy!!
I think I want to avoid white though. And I like the thought of covering them inexpensively - when I'm off bedrest I'm going to go check the Walmart selection of canvas!

Tink - check out craigslist.com and see if there is one near your city - you can get great deals on furniture there!!

Jessica,

I bought a nice thick fabric (not sure if it was canvas, but could be) from Walmart in a reddish-burgundy color for our chairs...I think it was like $7 a yard...I got 3 yrds. I think and didn't end up needing that much. But it worked out, because we've got cats that LOVE to sleep on those chairs so I figure I'll be needing to recover them again sometime and already have the fabric!

Do you have pictures Kim? That sounds nice
I will post pictures of the dining room later - it has a unique fireplace that could lend itself to color/style. Paul said he'll go to the house today and try to take pictures for me

I was given a dining room set a few years ago, and the chair seats were in less than perfect condition. I bought some damask seat covers and they really look nice. However, the cats decided these were the most ideal things in the whole house to nap on, so then I bought plastic tie-on covers to put over the damask covers because they repel fur. Now whenever people are coming over, I just snatch off the plastic covers and the damask covers are pristine (and no one sees the plastic , although if small children came I could leave the plastic on just for them). If anything ever gets spilled on the damask covers, I can pop them into the washer. :)

I can't wait unitl we refinance our house! We will then be putting in a new kitchen (we have the original kitchen from the 1940' or 50's which is falling apart!!), new bathroom (same as kitchen) and new carpets(same old original carpet). In the meantime we are saving to be able to paint (every wall in the home is a creamy colour) and to put up some new fences at the back.

We are buying a new house right now (we close next week!) and are in the process of choosing new paint, lighting, furniture, etc. It's been lots of fun!

The bedrooms are different colors now, but the new carpet will be "warm beige" and the walls will also be some sort of beige. I originally had planned for taupe, but most of our decor colors are warm tones and the beiges look better.

The kitchen is going to be painted red. The green tiles are just painted green, so I'll remove that paint and leave them white. The pink tiles are actually pink, so I'll paint them red. PIC

The breakfast area is linked to the kitchen, and will also be red. I bought a new lighting fixture on eBay that is going to look so nice there.

PIC of chandelier

The family room is going to stay yellow because the paint is in good shape and we are already painting 6 other rooms. It is open to the soon-to-be-red kitchen. We are buying a navy leather sofa set to go in here, and I saw a rug set at Linens & Things that incorporates the red/navy/yellow elements of this area of the house. I'm not going to buy it or the curtains until we get all of the furniture in and see what size we need. (Those orange curtains are coming DOWN immediately.)PIC

The master bedroom is going to be beige instead of yellow, and we have already purchased new furniture and bedding. I'm very excited about our new queen bed since Brian and I have been sleeping on my double bed from my single days ever since we got married. PIC of bedroom
PIC of furniture (Our bed actually has tall spiral carved posters, not the short posts pictured, but the rest of the pieces are the same)

New bedding

The hall bath already has a black and white theme. I wouldn't have chosen it, but I'm going to work with it. The cornice thing in front of the shower rod inspired me, so I got a really pretty black/white toile shower curtain, and it looks awesome with the dark red towels we got as wedding gifts (still brand new!) PIC

The formal room will also stay yellow. Our current livingroom furniture, which is terribly uncomfortable but still pretty, will go here. Our antique dining room set, which has been waiting patiently in storage, will also go here. I've already ordered cream colored seat covers for the chairs.

Dining room table
China cabinet

Sorry I can't post any "After" pics yet, but hopefully I can do that in a month or so after we get all settled in.

I felt the same way when we finally got a queen sized bed. up until then, we used the TWIN sized mattress that I had when i moved to the city.

we slept veerrrry close together. great for newlyweds, not so great once you decide you want to roll from one side to the other.

Here are the links to the recovered chair fabric and the homemade curtains I did for our entry windows...I tried to match the red as much as possible. The curtains are toile (I found the fabric at Walmart too!)

Here's a link to some plastic chair covers like the ones I bought (I think the ones I got were cheaper, but I can't find them now). Chair covers

If you tie the ties around the back of the chair instead of on each rung individually, it's super easy just to slide them off an on.

Congratulations on your new home Bethany! We were shocked at the amount of house we were able to afford here in DFW area on just Joel's income! We've got over 3000 sq.!

You should move to Texas then Nicole! Her kitchen is pretty normal/standard for this area!

BTW...I like your bedding! It's very summery!

I might need to get me som texan builder to come over and do my kitchen then hubby has been designing one on an ikea website... he likes greens I didn't really, but I do like the green of Bethany's. And it goes with yellow which is my fav colour in kitchens, and white.

LOL! You should! My kitchen is similar, except it's not painted green. It's still white...we've not been able to decide on a color for it!

Bethany your house is beautiful in the before state - can't wait to see after!!
Especially that bathroom - I like the black and white look and with red towels I bet it will be STUNNING!! You could have a single piece of art work in there - black frame with a white mat and a black/white/red picture or we have white 'shadow box' type frames that have red painted on the edge of the inside (so at an angel you see the red - the background is still white) and I have b&w pictures in it - looks stunning!

I love those orange curtains - not the color, but the look of them!! If they were a different color I would ask if I could buy them off of you!!

Thanks for the link to the chair cover - I like the idea of having them, but ones I could remove!

Kim - I LOVE your curtain print! Really nice!!

I'm sure your house isn't poo! From the pics you've posted it looks very nice!

Texans do build very large on the property lots. Unfortunately that leaves much smaller back yards!

I hope someday my house will actually be decorated. Right now the walls are white with mismatched brown and tan furniture and white bookshelves. I would love to decorate in the tan and red color scheme.

I started off with hand-me downs from dh's family, and remember looking forward to the day I could decorate my home. I just did the best I could with paint and accessories. Waiting for new furniture was so hard because it seemed like everyone I knew had lovely homes- later I discovered that many others were just making do as well... they were just doing such a good job of pulling their junk together that I was assuming it was what they wanted.

the trend here now is to do that too, and also small blocks so you can basically stick your hand out the window and touch your next door neighbours house. i dont like open plan living either. I like there to be separate areas where mum/dad's can go and kids can go, esp when they are older and have friends over and you have your friends over.

thanks kim

That's how we are too. The furniture in those pics I posted is from the previous owners that pretty much forclosed on the house because of poor financial decisions. That's why our formal living room's got no furniture in it!
