Beth Moore writes fiction? I always thought her talents lay in that direction, but I have never seen a novel by her.

Go to your local Christian book store and browse. 99% of Christian fiction is written by women for women. Okay, 99% may be an exaggeration, but my point is still valid, most Christian fiction is written by women for women.

I like both of those women and there is also a new woman writer who writes about the Amish. Her name is Cindy, but I can't remember her last name. I think she only has one book so far. She talks about getting help and encouragement from Karen Kingsbury- who is also an excellent author.

Cindy Woodsmall. My future brother-in-law's stepsister. [:)] Actually, two books so far. The series is called Sisters of the Quilt. The first book is "When the Heart Cries", and the second is "When the Morning Comes". It's a 3-book series. "When the Soul Mends" comes out in September.

Sorry for the ad.

Deeanne Gist - historical romance set mostly in the US. Far and above one of the best inspirational romance writers I have read. It's a hard genre to tackle on the inspirational side without getting preachy or corny. And unlike Francine River's Redeeming Love (which really has the flavor of romances published when it originally was), no super-perfect heroes.

Gist's books:
A Bride Most Begrudging
The Measure of a Lady
Courting Trouble (haven't read the last one)

I really don't get into the Amish stuff because it's been way overdone, IMO. I burned out on Beverly Lewis years ago. I also think the frontier settings are overdone too.

I haven't read any of these yet but they might be worth looking into if you like that Christian romances. There's the Romance for Good series published by Thomas Nelson, Cathy Marie Hake's books (Bethany House), Lady of Milkweed Manor by Julie Klassen (which seems to have gotten some very good reviews), and the new Avon Inspire line.

I second (third!) the recommendation for Karen Hancock's Arena.

Lisa Samson writes very realistic Christian women's novels - too deep to be considered "Chick Lit." They are very intense, though, so I recommend spacing them out.

My older daughter (18 1/2 yo) recently read one of The Debutantes series by Debra White Smith. She said it was pretty good. She likes mysteries, but it's difficult to find ones, Christian market or mass market, with a young adult female heroine.

Courting Trouble (haven't read the last one)

I read that and it was cute. I've enjoyed the entire Gist series.

That's her! She's awesome!

And thanks because I was considering looking her up on CBD.

Thanks my list is growing..sigh..where to start..does anyone have favorite devotions or bible studies they would like to share?

DenimDiva -> RE: Good Women Christian Writers (2/18/2008 9:18:29 AM)

I like the Recovery Devotional Bible.

HisCovenant -> RE: Good Women Christian Writers (2/18/2008 12:49:53 PM)

I'm a fan of the Precept.org studies. They have resources to wean you off of devotionals into inductive studies... or you can stick with their prepackaged studies as devotionals. They have studies thattake about an hour a week (40 minute series) on up to studies that have about 5 hours/week (Precept Upon Precept Series.)

Hi,
Gist has another book out:

'Deep in the Heart of Trouble' a sequel to 'Courting Trouble.'

I haven't read it but I can't wait. I really enjoyed her other books.

I am also a Rivers fan.

I recently read "A vow to cherish" By Deborah Raney this is the first of her books that I have read and I enjoyed it.

My favorite Author is George MacDonald

Many of his books have been translated and renamed by Michael Phillips who also writes his own novels, However, I mostly read him online at project gutenberg. Sir Gibbie is my favorite. (I named my puppy after the main character). I don't enjoy his Fairy books though.

George McDonald was not one of the Inklings but he was their contemporary.
I am also an Anglophile and would appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks!

HisCovenant -> RE: Good Women Christian Writers (2/19/2008 5:12:01 PM)

Anglophile authors:
Jane Austen
Charlote Bronte
George Eliot
Ann Radcliffe

Thanks for the information. It'll probably take a while to get here to Australia, but I'll keep an eye out for it. Not in a hurry for it yet though as I've just started reading her second book.

Francine Rivers is my absolute favorite Christian fiction author.
Others have mentioned her but I'd put her at the top of your list.[:)]
Redeeming Love and The Mark of the Lion series are probably my favorites.

PrincessButtercup -> RE: Good Women Christian Writers (2/24/2008 12:15:52 AM)

In historical fiction, Lori Copeland has some great books. Faith and Hope are excellent.

As for Bible studies, Precept is amazing. I prefer the 40 minute selections, and there's lotsa stuff there to choose from.

Those are awesome books. Redeeming Love is the story of Hosea set in the 1800's or something like that.

Eh...I was glad to have read Redeeming Love but...it's very much a romance genre novel of almost 20 years ago, and personally I think it is very overwrought and overdramatic. This may be simply a stylistic issue - I don't think the recent Deeanne Gist novels are like that at all.

It also bothers me how much hero-worship and "I want a man like that" out there regarding Michael Hosea by women who love the book. Yeah, I understood the symbolism. And, yeah, I've seen that with other popular books - there are a gazillion Edward fangirls related to Stephanie Myers Twilight series. I just would hope that mature Christian women could distance themselves from a fictional character more than that.
