Spring is in the air! Well almost. But it's always a good time to talk baseball. So let's discuss amongst ourselves

They disappeared the old baseball thread! How rude! Must have been a football fan that did it.

6 days, 21 hours, 43 minutes to spring training and counting!!!

So the Mets finally pulled it off! Johann Santana is officially a New York Met, and all it cost was a future all star and a gazillion dollars a year. Let's see how long he lasts before his arm falls off, or he breaks a leg, or a meteor drops on his head. I'm not getting too excited til I see him win a few. Signing him takes a lot of pressure off of Pedro, though, and that can only be good. But I'll miss Tommy Glavine. He's a class act, and his presence in the clubhouse will be missed.

My Cincinnati Reds should be able to contend this year. They finally have a manager who knows how to manage in the big leagues in Dusty Baker. They have two good starting pitchers in Arroyo and Harang and several young pitching prospects who should do well this season. They finally have a legitimate closer in Francisco Cordero. And, they have arguably the best everyday starting lineup in all of baseball - one that is capable of putting 7-10 runs on the board every game with guys like Adam Dunn, Ken Griffey Jr (who should hit homerun # 600 by the end of April), Brandon Phillips, Ryan Freel, and Edwin Encarnacion. They also have two rookies who could start and make a huge impact in CF Jay Bruce (last years minor league player of the year) and 1B Joey Votto (looked great during September call-ups).

The good news is that they are in the NL Central, by far the weakest division in baseball. That means any improvement could cause them to run away with the division this year. Pitching is the key. If the young pitchers (Bailey and Cueto) can hold their own this year, the Reds will be great.

For a change, the Reds actually have plenty of pitching to choose from in Spring Training this year with up to 9 guys vying for the final starting rotation spots and I believe 33 pitchers total in camp.

REALLY?!! How exciting! I'm so very happy that football is over!

Congrats about the Mets Bill! They're not gonna have another 'colapse' this year...not with Johan...he's typically a better second half pitcher!

I'll believe it when I'm buying my World Series Champions NY Mets hat, and not a day sooner. It wasn't just pitching that fell apart last year. The entire batting order went to sleep in September. They could have pitched 17 straight one run games and still would have lost half of them.

Let's face it: great farm systems make and keep great big league teams. You let the farm teams go, and the major team slowly slides away too.
Unless you're the Yanks and have *no farm system* and just buy your team every year.

Excuse me! That may be true in some past years, but we have some tremendous young pitching talent this year fresh off the farm. There's been a big move the last year or two away from spending big bucks on aging players. It still happens, but they are protecting their young talent now, and bringing them up.

And the Red Sox can't exactly throw stones about spending a lot of money on their team. They are after all in second place for spending.
