Just a reminder that we're heading off at 5am on Saturday May 3 to Seattle, where we will board Holland America's Oosterdam for a 7-day inside passage cruise to Alaska. (Hubbard Glacier, Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, and Victoria, British Columbia.) Our shore excursions include Whale Watching, Otter Watching, a hike through the Alaskan rainforest, as well as visits to the Eagle Center in Ketchikan and the Raptor Center in Sitka. We are also taking city tours of Victoria and Seattle.

(Be good and eat healthy while I'm gone, ok?)

I hope you have a great time and make wise choices while you're away! If you don't eat somewhat healthy, you may make yourself sick or miserable.

I'm having a real problem with snacking after supper again. Hubby is no help. He buys candy for me or will bring me a dish of Peach Cobbler I made for them.

I get discouraged when I go UP instead of DOWN or stay the same for too long.

How's everyone else doing?

I've gone up about 3 lbs, too, after ditching the calorie counting. I just can't seem to find a happy medium between being a food nazi all day every day and enjoying healthy, nutritious foods.

I find that I can't have stuff like peach cobbler around my house because I will eat it... even if I intend for only dh to eat it. Can you find a dessert that would be healthy and your hubby will like? We eat smothies or fresh fruit or have a square of 70+% dark chocolate.

Zippy, that is why I don't keep it in the house. I made the mistake of having french toast with syrup for breakfast and now I am craving sweets I need to do a 2 week detox and get the cravings out of my system.

I lost 2 pounds during our Disney trip (weird). But I've stayed steady since then - despite eating way less due to wisdom teeth surgery.

My cruise was nice.... but now I am re-losing some of the weight I gained back! Oh well, I'm not in a rush ... I just want to be healthy.

My cherry tomatoes are getting ripe ... I am excited.

The first corn of the season is coming out ... yum!

But I could sure do without this 102 degree weather ... ick!

Tammy, yay for your loss!

I know! I sometimes get discouraged because my old clothes still don't fit. But then I remind myself that I have lost 10 pounds already. Besides, slow and steady is more likely to be maintainable so it's a good thing!

I lost 3 more pounds this week, and I still haven't resumed exercising since my wisdom teeth extraction. I'm thinking I need to conclude that I wasn't eating enough and my metabolism slowed down or something. I don't know how else to explain this recent weight loss. Not that I'm complaining mind you!!

In fact - drum roll please........

I fit into a pair of jeans only 1 size bigger than my pre-pregnancy jeans!!!! Woohoo!!!

Tammy that is WONDERFUL!! Good for you!

So, I asked Jim to please not bring junk foods and candy into the house or to keep it in his office/ music room so it's outta sight and outta mind for me.

I'm getting so much exercise doing heavy yard work (such as raking an acre with 100 trees) and housework. I've not done my aerobics all week. I'm at 137 and holding while aiming for 124 as my final goal.

Keeping things out of sight is a great idea, Diane! It really does help!

Yard work and housework ARE great exercise, aren't they!? Woo hoo for that!

It rained all day today, only got 3 miles of biking in. Oh well ... tomorrow!

I'm going to jump in on this thread. I haven't been following the thread and I'm not going to read 12 pages. However, CONGRATULATIONS to all of you for losing weight, maintaining weight or just keeping up the good fight.

First, I'll give you all a little bit of my weighty background. I have been overweight since my body discovered hormones. After having babies, my body discovered more hormones. When my kids were young every time I tried to diet I would lose 20 pounds, stop losing, give up and gain 50. I gave up dieting for at least 20 years out of self preservation.

In 2003 I went to the doctor to begin trying to just be healthier. I was at my top weight of 320. The doctor checked my fasting blood glucose level -- it matched my weight. He put me on glucofage and sent me to the South Beach. Over the next 2 years on South Beach I lost almost 70 pounds. I was able to discontinue taking glucofage and I dropped out of diabetes. Woo hoo.

In 2005 I met a wonderful man and got married. Along with a new husband, I gained a huge extended family, family get-togethers, family-feasts, pot-lucks, multitudes of birthday parties, holiday celebrations, almost every pound that I had lost.

Naturally, I also gained back the diabetes. I have struggled and struggled to get my blood glucose back under control. My doctor has been patient, but he refuses to put me back on medication. He wants me to control my sugar with my diet and lose weight because he knows it will work. Whereas, meds just bring on more meds. <sigh> At my last appointment, May 13th, Dr. G. lost his patience. (Don't worry, he was very nice about it.) My A1C had gone higher. Too high to put off a solution any longer. He still doesn't want to go with meds so he handed me a diet and said, "Here. This will get your numbers down." He reviewed it with me and sent me home with 2 prescriptions--one for potassium and the other for Keto-strips--and another apointment in 1 month. Those Rx's might give you a clue about the kind of diet he handed me.

So, for the last 20 days, I've been on the "Protein Sparing Modified Fast" diet. It works. I don't recommend it (except if your doctor hands it to you), but, it works. My glucose levels have been averaging 95. The ketone strips show that I've been burning fat at a moderate level. And, I've lost at least 18 pounds. What do I eat? Note the word "fast" in the name of the diet. I eat low fat proteins in limited quantities. I eat less that 10 grams of carb a day. I eat supplements. Yuck. Ptttwy. But...it works.

So, I'm joining this thread to gain more support to accomplish what my doctor has ordered. My husband is a wonderful support. Dr. G would like my hubby on it too but that's another story. Hubby is planning to cut back and lose weight his own way. I think watching me not eat is scaring him into any other method. LOL!! But, I just need to know there are others with me when I face down the family get-togethers, family-feasts, pot-lucks, multitudes of birthday parties, holiday celebrations.

Here are my current stats and triumphs:

Starting Weight: 306.0 pounds (If I remember the doc's scale correctly. I kinda blocked that out of my memory. It may have been more. Certainly not less.)
Current Weight: 288.0 pounds
Loss to Date: 18 pounds
Starting average glucose level: 200+
Current average glucose level: 95
Starting A1C: 8.8
Age: 48 years old
Health issues: diabetes, hypothyroidism
Method: starvation diet. LOL!! (Not quite but close.)
Exercise: nothing specific yet

Laura!! Welcome!

That's wonderful news that your doctor wants you to control your diet through natural, God-given means. Too often I hear of doctors handing out meds like candy and refusing to reduce dosage when the patient probably needs it. It is really encouraging to me.

Are you finding enough recipes?

Are you going to begin some form of exercise?

As difficult as this is, I, too, am happy that Dr. G doesn't want me on meds. It would be so much easier but in the long run not so good.

Recipes? How many ways are there to cook nothing. LOL!! Maybe I could find ways to flavor up the calcium, potassium and magnesium supplements. The one-a-day sure could use a better flavor.

Seriously, my diet consists of 2-3 ounces of protein for breakfast. 5 ounces of meat and 1 veg for lunch...ditto for dinner. I get 2 ounces of low fat cheese for a snack. And, lots and lots of water. It's pretty unimaginative but quite simple.

I hope to start walking regularly. My main problem with exercise is that we are gone so much through the week that it's difficult to find time. Although yard and garden work is kicking into gear now that Memorial Day is past.
