I've actually been doing well. I've been working through a baby-loss devotional, and I find that while the grief isn't fun while I'm reading it, I tend to feel better throughout the day and throughout the week when I'm giving myself that time. Thankfully that extends to my food habits. Anne-girl, good for you! I find I am the same way with my bible lol. I find it painful while I'm reading it because the Lord is really working with me on a few things right now and I find that somehow my scriptures always point to the one area I'm not wanting to give to God. But, I always feel SO much better throughout the day, and you are right, you tend to eat better also. I have never experienced the kind of loss you have, but my prayers go out to you all the same. I cannot imagine. I'm glad you are reaching out to God through your devotions, as I have known other women who run the opposite way and I think the grieving process is so much harder without allowing the Holy Spirit a chance to be that comforter, you know? Also, I know my mother has said that she had trouble putting her pain into words (she is bipolar) until she read some of the things I wrote. I learned to cope from the way I watched my mother cope, and so when I became sick, I already had an arsenal of coping mechanisms that made my illness so much harder than was necessary. My mother still refuses to medicate (unless you count self-medicating) the right way, and she doesn't attend therapy of any kind. Both of those things were the only thing that kept me going through many of the years I suffered with the disease. Whenever I go back and read over my old journals, it makes me so glad just to be alive. Dark days doesn't even begin to describe it. Thank God for my healing! Every day now is a thousand times brighter than my brightest day when I was sick, if that makes any sense. Well, today went well. The only thing I really ate that I shouldn't have was a bowl of some sugar-graham-square thingys cereal that I shared with Aaron. He and I woke up from a very long nap (I think we were both trying to recuperate from our trip still) and we were both hungry and I didn't plan ahead so there it is. We only ate one bowl though, so there's that. Dinner was grilled steak (I ate a 3 oz portion) with steamed fresh green beans and steamed summer squash/zucchini, both with a splash of olive oil and seasonings. It was very good. We walked over to the park and watched the fireworks and I ate a piece of sugar-free candy along with a diet Dr. Pepper. Now I'm refereeing between my two middle sons who just got into a fist fight, and then going to bed. Ugh puberty is awful and having two of them going through it at the same time is just obnoxious. Have a good night, ya'll.

ORIGINAL: Miss Giggles That's not too bad but you do know that ketchup is almost pure sugar, right? They do make a low carb version but I have no idea how it tastes. Keep up the good work though. Regular ketchup isn't awful, I think for 2tbsp it's like 4-5g of carbs. Not really bad depending on how much of it you are eating. We are back from a weekend trip away and I am TIRED. Back to the grind tomorrow...

I think it must be, but I wouldn't know. To me, when I'm grieving, I don't have a choice but to reach out to God; at least, it doesn't feel like a choice, it just feels like I couldn't make it through a single day without Him. That said, I am certainly praying and reaching out more deliberately now; at first I was too numb to read the Bible, too numb to pray anything but short prayers, and too numb to let sermons sink in. Thankfully that is softening. I think I need to get back into my tracking--I'm following WW and supposed to write down everything I eat but I'm usually too lazy to do it the same day, let alone at the same meal. I'm sure it's the reason I've stalled in my weight loss. Last time I was within 10 lbs of my goal, it took heavier exercise to get me there, and right now I'm just not sure if I have the energy to get back into running, spinning, etc. So I'll just have to do it with food alone.

I am not doing well on my diet or exercise. :( I think I am going to have to go on the strick low carb diet again. It is better for me to have the food set than for me to pick it.

I need to get back low carb too. Still struggling with late night eating binges, especially last night, when I had to be on the computer due to software updates. Today, I'm trying to eat low carb, with mixed results: Breakfast: 2 packets instant oatmeal with raisins and 1 cup milk, 1 packet splenda, coffee with milk. Lunch: 3 slices Kraft American cheese , about 1 2/3 cup milk. (low carb) Snacks: 1 banana, 1 sugar free popsickle, maybe had more cheese, but I don't remember (I need to write foods down right after I eat them!) Dinner: Planned menu is pork chops, mac & cheese and cooked frozen veggie, strawberries and coffee with milk. Bedtime snack might be yogurt. Not too good today, but there's always tomorrow, at least until Jesus comes. Then I won't have to worry about my weight anymore, because my slim body will be in a size 2 pure white linen robe!

I really have had a couple of bad food days, and now I need to get back on track. Stinky ol' holidays always get me - grrrr! I walked for an hour and a half today. It was grueling, and my calves were already sore (seems that since I started walking they stay sore all the time). Sometimes I wonder if I am doing the right thing by doing all this walking, especially when it's causing me pain. Of course, on the flip side of that, this extra 50lbs is the reason I am in so much pain in the first place. Kind of a catch-22. I used my Wii Fit on Saturday and I did the free step while my husband and I watched a movie. My feet always hurt after I use the Wii Fit, and I know others have said the same. How safe can it be to work out with no shoes on? Anyway, that's my whining for the day. I'm going to go to bed and start all over tomorrow. I did learn something today - if I don't eat a high-protein breakfast, I definitely have a lot more cravings, and the cravings are intense! Hope ya'll fared better today!

Mama Jennleigh, are you stretching really well after you walk? You might find that would help you a great deal. Other than yoga, I have to have shoes on to exercise. It would kill my knees and ankles. I am doing okay on food. I don't track everything I eat. That practice pressures me to practice severe calorie restriction. It causes me a great deal of anxiety. I will start to starve myself. Not good on so many levels. So I am doing the whole food approach. I am learning to eat until I am full or to the point I know I will be full in 15-20 minutes. I hope to make it to the gym today. It depends on children's moods and hubby's court schedule. It is looking promising though. I think I will do a couple of miles on the crazy crosstrainer. That thing is crazy hard! Karen

I'd also suggest that you might want to explore self-massage of your calf muscles; when I started running I needed to, so you might well need it with walking (esp since you're pushing a stroller; that's a real workout!). I've become something of an "evangelist" for the following book: triggerpointbook.com. It's great because you can do the massage on yourself, and it doesn't take long, so if you're strapped either time- or budget-wise it's a very useful tool.

Karen, I do stretch, but I will admit I don't do it nearly enough. I've had to nix the walk for today and let my calf rest. I've been having some problems with my feet, as well (I have a plantar wart on the bottom of my big toe and it is giving me some pain when I walk). I'm going to do some yoga with the wii fit later today- it really stretches my body well, and I always feel so much better afterward! I'm also planning on doing some upper body strength training with my weights and resistance band. I used to do the yoga on the wii fit each time I came home from my walk, but I have gotten rushed the last several times due to having the other baby that I keep here when I walk. So, it's been quick stretches while I make lunch lol. Anne-girl, I am going to see if the library has that book. You are right, pushing a double stroller up hills is really a tough workout. According to Sparkpeople, I am only walking a 20-minute mile pace, which is just ok, but I simply cannot walk any faster than that without causing injury while pushing a 30 lb baby and a 15 lb baby in a 10 lb stroller up and down steep hills. I'm already out of breath, so that's my limit. I'm doing much better today, minus the resting instead of working out like I wanted to :( I figure it's better to rest it than to push it and injure myself where I can't work out at all!

How is everyone doing? I am doing alright on eating. I eat too little during the day because I rarely have the time. I often forget until much later. Then I would eat everything in sight in the evening if I don't watch out. I worked out Monday and Tuesday. I am going running in a little bit today. I don't want to run today. I feel like I have just had my hands full of littles and I am unmotivated. Of course, those are the days I really need to run! I am going to weigh in this weekend and see where I am. I hope everyone is doing well. Karen

Things here are going well. Food-wise I am doing just ok. I eat perfectly during the day and then blow it before or after dinner with a mini-binge. I don't know why. I'm trying to figure it out and I'm praying, praying, praying! I have not exercised this week, except for Monday. It's that TOM, and I just have not felt up to it. That's a poor excuse but it's the truth. I just got to a point where my calf isn't hurting and it's been kind of nice not to have my muscles aching all the time lol! I know that is not going to help me in the long run, though, so I am getting ready to take my little one for a walk in a few minutes. I am at least walking to the store nearby, we'll see how much further I get than that. I'm sad today, I had to buzz cut my baby's hair last night because I tried to cut his hair for the first time and he freaked out and I ruined it. I feel better about it today, but I was really sad about it last night. :( Pray for me, ladies, if you can today. I'm determined to say NO to the flesh today, and eat what is good for my body, and what will help me lose this excess weight, not what Jenn wants instead. I need all the help I can get!

I am doing ok on the exercise. Diet I am still working on. I am doing better at keeping a log because I may have to see a nutritionist. I have pleataued the last month or so but could have been more strict on the eating. I am down a pound but I seem to lose/gain in stages rather than a slow decline or increase on the scale.

The scale has finally started to move for me again. I lost 0.8# last week and 1.4# this week. This is after six months of weekly losses averaging 0.3#. The main thing I've changed is spacing out my exercise. I think that has helped keep the metabolism up.

You mean more than once a day workouts? Like 3 ten minute walks?

I exercise 45 minutes to an hour in the morning and about that long in the evening. If I can't get outside to walk/jog with the dog in the evening, I'll do at least 20 minutes on the stair stepper or exercise bike. I was doing about an hour an a half of exercise in the morning, but I think I work harder and keep the metabolism up better by doing a morning and an evening workout.

Some studies that I've read suggest that even 15-20 minutes of intervals (2 minutes slow pace, 1 minute all out effort) two or three times a day can make a huge difference. Yesterday I was really busy and had to break my morning workout into two 20 minute sessions. I have a heart rate monitor and I think it's a big help in motivating me to work harder.

I've been doing poorly this week; I sorta expected it. I had the double whammy of the due date of the baby I lost this winter, and DH's grandfather dying. He was out of town for the funeral, and I missed him; it was so hard not to be with him to help him grieve. Because DH was away, I felt like I could "cheat" foodwise. Which makes no sense since he's "cheated" plenty with my knowledge; he's been to DQ for a Blizzard about a dozen times in June/July. Although even then, how I "cheat" has changed; allowing myself to buy pudding cups instead of, say, ice cream. The exercise, however, I managed to keep up. It's easier when it's gorgeous out to get out to the gym at lunch. For those of you at home with kids, how do you handle childcare when you're exercising? Cart them along with you? Daycare at the gym? Bartering? Workout only when your husband is home? I'm trying to figure out how I could get running into my routine when I'm at home with kids, given that they can't go in jogging strollers for the first 6 mos.

I heard its closer to a year for a jogging stroller, which is what some pediatricians recommend. You could probably walk with them on flat surfaces but they want them to be a little older for running because of the impact in case you hit a bump, etc. http://running.about.com/od/kidsteens/a/safetystroller.htm It says 6 months in that article but then goes on to say a year (probably for trails and bike paths that are rougher terrain)

I didn't even know that about a jogging stroller. Of course the only exercise I've gotten over the past year since Aaron was born has been walking. I thought about getting a jogging stroller because I like the bigger wheels, but it never panned out. Anyway, I used to wear Aaron in a front carrier and I would walk all over town with him in it. He was very needy when he was born so I really needed to get out of the house and he seemed to really love it. Now I have a double stroller that I use whenever I have both babies or just Aaron as I like the way it moves (much smoother than my umbrellas stroller). I was desperate to exercise when Aaron was an infant so I did whatever I could think of. I put him in the front carrier (he needed to be held constantly) and walked in place if it was raining, or I did push ups while he was on the floor. I took him out and about in the carrier and ignored when my back screamed. Now I just take him out for a long walk every day or else I wait until he's taking a nap and I use the Wii Fit or a Leslie Sansone walking video.
