I found a site some of you may find very helpful: http://www.nutrimirror.com/ It's free. You set it up and can count calories or whatever it is you like to count, I think. It figures everything for you! All you have to do is log it. I've been using it for about 3 days, and am finding it very helpful and NOT condemning in the least. It's just encouraging. I haven't tried the discussion boards at all, just the food and exercise logs, so can't give you a review of that. shallbe

Looks neat.. I was using sparkpeople.. but it needs some more features.. I am a numbers geek. I'd prefer something that has a mobile version.. thats one of the benefits to having a smartphone.

I have a smartphone, but I haven't seen any apps for it that I thought i'd like and use. Rather just use the memo app to log my food/exercise, and input it when I get back to my computer. I think it would be neat if nutrimirror made a smartphone app, though... shallbe

The mobile sites work well.. I tried calorieking mobile and sparkpeople mobile. Its just that its on the internet so occasionally the site will be down. Also tried myfooddiary.com.. which also has a mobile site. I have an Iphone.. I am working on putting all my foods into Lose It!.. it's free.. the only thing it doesn't let you do is export the foods so you can back them up or print them out.. but the developers say that feature is coming.

Well, I'm not doing well today. After all that I posted about not giving into emotional eating, I did it anyway. and yes, they did bring in more snack foods for the family to eat, which they insist must stay on the kitchen counter, otherwise they won't get eaten. I just have to remember that no matter how much I want to eat those foods, I can choose not to have them, just let them be for everyone else who don't have weight issues. Even though I started out high carb today, I'm more or less back on low carb tonight. Calories though are still out of the ballpark. I ate a bagel and milk for breakfast, three slices of pizza and milk for lunch, cheese and milk for snack and hot dogs, cucumbers (both with Ceaser dressing), cottage cheese and a sugar free ice cream bar for dinner. Because I ate so much today, I might not have a bedtime snack. I also don't plan to be up late tonight playing on the computer either, which is a major eating trigger for me. As I posted in THIS thread, I'm wondering whether I should continue with the low carb eating plan or not. Any helpful advice on this topic would be much appreciated.

I think you should focus on protein and fiber. Those foods will fill you up and are better for you.

Everything is going well. Yesterday I ran 3 miles again. It feels like it is a for real thing. Eating is going okay as well. I am still not wanting to get on the scale. I need to do it soon but I don't want to be disappointed. But...I did slip on a pair of size 8 pants this morning. It was an exciting time. MyCatSmokey, I hope this doesn't offend because it is unasked for advice but I would really consider getting rid of all the diet junkfood. Personally, I don't eat anything with artificial sweetner. It is poisenous in large quantities so I am going with the idea that it is not that good in small either. I will try to look up the research later but they are also not good for your blood sugar levels and sweet cravings. In fact, they will cause your sweet cravings to increase rather than decrease. I cannot say enough how much better a balanced whole food diet is for you. It will also help you get a control over your cravings. Eating food that is really good for you rather than food that is not that bad for you will also help you have a much healthier relationship with food. Just some thoughts. I really hurt to see you struggle so much. I have to run. My littles and I are off to visit a friend on her very fun homestead. Karen

Mycat, what helped me most when I was trying to get over food cravings was to substitute similar, but healthier foods for the things I liked best, and just not eat the less-healthy stuff that I didn't love. Eg bread was never something I loved, so I stopped having sandwiches; if I loved bread I would have switched to 100% whole grain (sprouted wheat is even better if you can find it). Rice and pasta I loved, so I switched to whole-grain pasta and brown rice. I still love pasta, but it's no longer a "trigger" food for me; I don't want seconds and thirds, and even if I did, it's too filling to have more than a serving. When I was first playing around with sweet foods I also ate a lot of sugar substitutes; sugar-free sweetened yogurt, popsicles, etc. My doctor advised me to cut our all fake sugars when I was pregnant, and believe it or not, I crave sweet foods MUCH less often now that I'm not eating any sugar substitutes, and very little refined sugar. I even like yoghurt plain now, and I didn't think that was possible. You might consider the substitutes I tried for ice cream: soy ice cream is still full of sugar, but higher in protein and much more filling. I could never eat more than a 1/2 cup because the calories are less "empty". The other thing that worked well for me is frozen-fruit pops; the kind that are just 100% frozen blended fruit, no sugar or juice added. Believe me, I had a major sweet tooth most of my life and I would never have thought I could make those changes, but now that I have, sugar has nowhere near the sway that it used to. Now, fruit is usually enough to satisfy my cravings for sweet foods.

Melissa, I was going to say the same thing as Karen. I think that if you try to focus on whole foods, rather than "diet" foods you might find that you are much fuller than before, and you won't crave sugar as much. I am learning this after many many attempts at doing it the other way. I still eat carbs, but I try very hard to make sure they are from fruits, vegetables, and 100% whole grains only. Just my 2 cents'. I will be praying for you today. It is so hard to see junk food, the very food that has been our "friend" for so long, sitting on the counter of the kitchen and not crave it intensely. I'm praying that the Lord will help you flee this temptation. Read I Corinthians 10:13 and remember that if we call on Jesus, He WILL provide us with a way to bear our temptations. It has been working absolute miracles in my life the past few weeks! Karen, I am so excited for you and your size 8 jeans! I have also lost a size! I went to my mother's a few weeks ago and she gave me a number of shirts, pairs of shorts, and a few "skorts". They are all too big now! I have lost 5 lbs. total and I measured my waist to see 1.5" gone! I am feeling wonderfully about this, but I have to tell you that as I lay in bed last night, I was suddenly plagued by negative thoughts. I mean, to the point that I began to get angry. I began to think about how tired I was, and how no one appreciates what I do, and how my husband came home and fell asleep on the couch while I was getting dinner ready instead of helping with the baby. Then, all of a sudden, I thought, what in the world is going on here? Do you think the enemy is attempting to distract me from my goal? It happened a few times between yesterday and last night, and it seems to come from nowhere! I couldn't sleep last night, so I began to pray for the Lord to take those thoughts from me, and for me to think good thoughts about my husband (as in, he was so tired from working so hard yesterday - he is a heavy equipment mechanic and really does work very hard - that he couldn't help falling asleep) and to forgive my children for being, well, children. I finally felt some peace and went to sleep. How odd. In any case, I'm up and at 'em this morning and already had an awesome breakfast and getting ready to clean the house and get some exercise after that. Hopefully I'll get a good walk in today.

I have stuck to my plan. I am on day 3. :) I have not cut out all my artificial sweetners yet. I hate them. I love sugar. And I am a big soda drinker. So I am doing Diet Dr. Pepper & Fresca. I also have some zero calorie water. It is mostly for variety. I drink so much plain water. Between 3-4 liters a day. More if I go to the gym. I just get bored after a while. I also knew I would have the caffine & sugar headache, so I spred it out. LOL! I am getting 1 can of soda, maybe. I don't finish it often, as I don't like diet. I would go with what works for you. The best thing for me is planning. If I wait to fix my lunch or don't eat at the right time, then I get really hungry and just eat whatever and however much I want. But if I plan my meals, and that is all I have here, then that is it. And you can do things in steps. In stead of a Cheeseburger, have it with just the meat and cheese no bread, then a boat load of veggies, and if you want, a few fries. But count them out. Make sure you are a serving. That is my big problem, making sure I don't eat more than a serving.

If I don't count things out, I will overeat. Period. I have determined there is something in my brain that refuses to see how big the portions I would eat are! I have to measure things out and count things out, and although it was an ENORMOUS pain at first, I have really gotten used to it and it takes no time at all, really. I mean, I would have to use a big spoon to take the food out of the pan anyway, just as easy to use a measuring cup to do it.

Well, it's a new day for me, a day to start over again. I've developed a new plan, which I'll share later, but since I've caught up in reading this thread, I may have to revise it a little. I will take the suggestions about eliminating sugar free stuff under serious consideration. I'm wondering, can you get addicted to artificial sweeteners like you can with sugar? I can't imagine life without anything sweet, like cookies, ice cream or candy again. My new attitude for today is: I DON'T HAVE TO EAT IT, JUST BECAUSE IT'S THERE. I CAN CHOOSE TO EAT IT OR NOT. This ties in with the verse about overcoming temptation, that God won't let me be tempted beyond what I can bear. I'm refocusing my mind on these thoughts as I log off and go work in my garden now. Have a good day and great success!

Melissa, I don't know if you can get addicted to sweeteners, but for me, conquering sweet stuff was about changing my perspective. I had to go from seeing it as an food group that I deserved to eat every day, to an occasional food group that I could have on occasion. If I want sweet stuff every day, there's always fruit; I think in some ways I like cherries better than man-made sweet stuff. (I can't believe I just said that!) I think your mantra sounds like a great plan, and an excellent way to distract yourself from the junk food at home. I have to admit that if I were in your shoes I would go nuts; I am in a situation where I can control what food comes into the house, but if I weren't I'd have to develop a will of iron. Perhaps you could mentally label all the junk food according to who eats it; you know, visualize a name tag on everything. "Can't have the chips, those are Joshua's! I can't have the pudding, that's Mom's!" or something like that. I've found that sort of exercise helps distract me from the food that's there--in my case, the office snack table. By the way, I love your new cat avatar, and I'm not even all that fond of cats.

I have decided to toss the scale for at least 6 months. I have been working out hard and eating right. I recently dropped another pants size. Against my better judgement I got on the scale and was so disappointed, it hadn't moved! Not one pound in 4 weeks. Even more disappointing to me was my attitude. I went into that bathroom feeling strong. I had a baby 11 weeks ago by c-section and I was back to running 3 miles at a good pace. I came out feeling like a failure. And that, my sweet sisters, is just silly. Why on earth am I going to let a number on the scale define how I feel? Ridiculous. It made me feel like what is the work doing? Is it worth it? After getting my head back on straight I knew it is worth it. I don't know what is happening. Maybe I am building muscle or it was a weird day or whatever. There are more things to gauge success. I feel great. I am running hard. I have much more flexibility and movement, my clothes are big. I refuse to allow myself to define me as a number. So for the next 6 months my weight is somewhere between 100-200lbs. I have to break this mentality. Karen

Karen, I could have written that post a thousand times over in the past several years (well, all except the running part lol!). I am at a point where I was wondering the same thing as you were in that bathroom. Why am I depriving myself if the scale isn't going to budge anyway? I am doing what I'm supposed to be doing, am I just destined to be big? What else can I do? Do I really have to starve myself and work out all the time in order to be thinner? These are all the things that keep rolling through my head every. single. time. I step on that scale (unless I see a big change, that is, and that hasn't happened in a long time). It's like I see the scale and it's the only indicator of my progress, never mind that my pants are all too big, the arms of my shirts fit properly (always a problem before), I'm down a size, and I can see the results of all that exercise in the way I feel when I move. I have really been feeling convicted lately of spending so much time with those thoughts. I went from obsessing about being a "certain" weight to obsessing about "just being healthy". I just exchanged one mode of self-absorption for another. I'm with you; I don't think I'll step on the scale again until I have my next physical at the doc's office. It has never brought me any kind of happiness or good feelings. It always just brings me pain, even when the numbers reflect change. I think I'll do like you've done, and focus on what changes I have made, and the successes, no matter how small they seem, because that is what matters in the end.

I might too! I have been trying to get some end of season clothes and it is aggravating.. but then I get bloated often.. I almost need two sizes just for that reason.. or else I'd take measurements..but since most of my weight is around the middle then my measurements aren't accurate.
