Melissa, good for you on resisting temptations. We have to take it one minute at a time, and realize that it is a choice. No matter how much we are tempted, it is still a choice. Remember 1 Cor. 10:13!!! "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." (NIV) Remember the most important part, God is faithful, and He won't let you be tempted beyond what you can bear! I have had to call on this verse many times over the past few months. The less you give in to the temptation, over time, the less it will actually tempt you. Yeah it's getting easier every day, especially since what happened today makes me feel like a Biggest Loser contestant facing a temptation challenge. Someone brought over a BIG BOX of sweets, including donuts, banana cake, etc. I'm just telling myself and I told my family, I've lost 2 1/2 lbs. this week, I'm losing weight and I'm not eating that stuff! (that's the G rated version, anyway)

Ask your pastor, I'm sure he'd know of a needy family to give it all to. Or maybe there's a homeless shelter in your town/city.

Or if your church has a coffee time after the service, share it there.

But the only food decisions I can make are for myself, not for other people. In other words, I'm not in charge of this particular food, so I have no say in what happens to it. I did put the box on top of the fridge, so that it wasn't staring me in the face, though.

Good News! We have a new month! Let us start afresh or for others may you continue to stay on track! PTL! Who gives us the strength to do the right! As long as we keep our eyes on Jesus! Remember Peter in the water! Things went great when his eyes were on the Lord and not on his circumstances!

In other words, no more feeling bad about wasting food because of those "starving children in whatever third world country" bit. This part is extremely important! I am going to exercise today, not sure about running since I am recovering from a cold (I think) so I may just walk.

Melissa, can I make a couple of suggestions that I realize are completely unasked for? You may already know these things and if you do I will not bring it up again. I really want to support you on this because I know it is very important to you. First, I notice you eat things like sugar free ice cream. Have you looked at the calories? Often sugar free or fat free have a suprisingly high calorie content. Second, if you would think about making pretty much make every bite you take as nutrient dense as possible, then I think you would find that you were fuller, felt better, and less prone to cravings. It would stabalize your blood sugar, avoiding spikes, therefore avoiding many urge, to binge on unhealthy food. What I mean is eating lowfat yogurt instead of ice cream, a small amount of almonds rather than chips, sweet red pepper rather than green, to in general make all your food count. I think you would be surprised at your weight loss if you did. Again, I am super sorry if I offend. I just noticed some of this when you posted what you ate.

I don't mind you making suggestions, because I know that you're trying to help me and everyone else here. I'll have to think about what you've posted. Giving up sugar free foods, like ice cream, pudding and diet soda is hard to do. I like my sweets!

Hey, y'all! I'm going to re-join this thread. After leaving my job in August, I lost about 10 pounds almost immediately, but now the weight loss has slowed a bit. This week, I decided to try a weight loss program for a few reasons... the first week is a "detox" where you eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Then you start using a few herbs, plus Chromium. More than weight loss, I'm hoping to "ditch" a few health concerns, including asthma, and get very healthy. I have recently been reading a lot about nutrition and some of the dangers of the foods we are currently eating. So I'm ditching canola oil and other genetically modified foods, corn syrup, partially-hydrogenated oils, sugar, flours, processed foods, etc. This isn't going to be easy, but I've been doing it bit-by-bit over the past few months and have replaced most offenders.

Instead of jumping in, gung-ho and both barrels blazing (which I am not against, just not successful at keeping up with this level of intensity ), my dear sweet hubby and I made one change at a time, however small it might seem, we just did one thing. Now, three years later (with some time off due to an unexpected but very much appreciated pregnancy lol), we have made serious headway and we are experiencing the kind of weight loss that is slow, but steady. I am 25 pounds lighter than I started out after Aaron was born, and I feel better. Now, if I could just stick to an exercise routine, I would really make some progress. But, due to babies and crazy schedules, I'll take whatever I can get. Slow and steady, after all. . . .

But I am finding that if I make one change at a time, eventually there will be many changes made. Exercise is one of the hardest for me to get into... there are so many things I want to do in the morning, and so many things I want to do in the evening, that it often gets crowded out until I *really* want to go for a walk.

I am at 159. That is 2lbs off of my pre Logan pregnancy weight. Now I only, only???, have 39 lbs to go. I have to tell you I feel great. My eating has been right on and yesterday I shaved off 35 seconds on my 3 miles. I got it down to 30:32. I can taste that 30 minutes marker. There are so many things contributing to this but a huge one is dh. I usually take the kids to the gym daycare but sometimes it doesn't work out. He will always come home a few minutes early or come home for lunch to get me to the gym. He says men that complain about their wives but won't do anything to help should shut up. Actually, he said men that complain about their wives should just shut up. Melissa, it is hard. I won't lie to you. Breaking that sweet teeth is like coming off of heroine, seriously. Try having nonfat vanilla yogurt with some berries after a healthy, balanced dinner. Spreading your eating through the day is good for so many reasons. I know you can do this. You can take control of your life and not be a victim of your cravings. You are a strong woman with a desire to please God. For that, He will bless you.

Karen, I thought of you this morning while I was reading Proverbs. There was a scripture in there about self-control, and being without it was like being a city broken down and without walls. It really hit home with me - I feel like a broken city without defenses these days. Not just with the fitness/eating thing, but in a lot of areas. I think it all stems from one place, though. I have been doing much better with eating. Being in a financially tight place means meals are not as healthy as I would like them to be, but honestly it's not what we're eating that is the problem. It's how much we are eating, and always has been. We eat healthier than 90% of the people I know (lots of veggies, fruit, and lean protein, no fast food, don't eat out, etc.), but we eat too much, without a doubt. I am really working on that. I prayed this morning that God would build up my "city" and give me defenses (walls) to resist the enemy of my health. I prayed for self-control - I know I have it, it's just rusty and needs to be exercised, much like the rest of me :) My babysitting mom didn't pay me Monday since her baby was out sick, so I'm off to the gym tonight to pay for my month and work out - YAY!!!

Thanks, posters for your great thoughts! It has helped to " think" more when I grab something that is considered junk food during the day. I want to add what a doctor told a couple. He told them that it would be okay if they "indulged" with two tablespoons of their favorite ice cream each night. Sometimes if we restricted ourselves from something we desire, we cave in and eat much more than a couple of tablespoons of it. Would it be okay for Melissa (MyCatSmokey20) or for me and others to cut down her(their) portion of ice cream and add yogurt and fruit too. For example for me to change a bad habit, I find that it helps if I gradually reduce the ice cream to say 1 scoop of ice cream and 1 scoop of delicious yogurt and fruit, then eventually I will be eating fruit and yogurt! I find if I don't restrict at the beginning I am more apt to change my ways. What do you all think? I like the thoughts of taking small steps to change my ways and using God's Word to strengthen and to help me make any changes. You posters are wonderful!!

Ah self-control, that is what it is all about isn't it? Recently, I had a very cool woman tell me that I was one of the 3 most disciplined people she know. I told her that the reason I was so disciplined is because I really struggle with self control. Moderation is not a word I use in talking about myself. I must remain very disciplined or I flail the other way, qucikly. Jenn, it is hard to eat healthy on little money. A couple of things that help is to buy in season and look at lentils and beans. I make a crockpot full of stewed lentils that will feed my husband and I 4 rather large meals. We eat have and freeze half. That helps with having two littles. Also, they are so yummy. Another huge thing is I no longer eat until I am full. I stop well before that. No more bloated, yucky, I shouldn't have done that feeling. Bettymack, would it be okay? That really depends on the person. Most people cannot keep themselves to the two tablespoons. To be very blunt, I have known so many who struggle with weight loss. To my observations, the people that said they deserved a treat every now and then or if they deny themselves they would over indulge almost never lost the weight. The ones that really lost the weight and kept it off were the ones that kept themselves very disciplined for 99% of the time. It is not true that you can't deny yourself. You actually can but it is really really hard at first. But after 3-4 weeks, yes it is a long time, it becomes a lifestyle change. The other day I had some M&M's from Halloween. I cannot tell you the last time I had candy, cookie, ice cream, etc. It made me absolutely sick. I was thrilled. But still sick, yuck. Here is where my head is at, nothing tastes as good as fit and healthy feels. Nothing. That is the bottom line. I am almost 38 years old and I have not felt better since my teens. I am running, working out, playing hard with my kids, doing everything as a woman, wife, and momma that I could ever dream of doing. I have so much energy. I eat foods that taste INCREDIBLE. Now that I rid by body of all that processed stuff, real food tastes soooooo good. I had some fresh pineapple the other day that was so good I almost wanted to rub in on my skin to aborb it faster. So that is my opinion, eat fresh, healthy food, get plenty of exercise, sunshine, fresh air, and laughter. There is no ice cream sundae in the world that tastes better than that.

Karen, I am just like you in this respect: quote:
Moderation is not a word I use in talking about myself. I must remain very disciplined or I flail the other way, qucikly. I was simply born without that switch that lets me have a "little bit" of something that is not good for me. I have no signal system that says, "that's enough". This applies to just about everything, not just food. We eat a lot of beans and rice. Not necessarily due to the budget (although it helps tremendously lol), but because we like them. I love all kinds of beans, and don't even need rice to justify them . I do eat them a lot, and we are cutting back on our beef consumption (which is not that much to begin with). Really, the issue is overeating and lack of exercise. I'm determined, though. That's that.

I promise you all that if you can just stick it out for a few weeks, it becomes so much easier. It is hard and seems like it won't end but then one day you get up and think whole grain, cereal, and some berries sound awesome for breakfast..
