Scientists aren't saying anything will happen on this date! Some astrologers and other "mystic" minded people are. Don't worry, it is bunk.
Basically, the Mayan calendar ends on or around that date. No problem.

Doesn't God warn us about listening to the doctrines of demons? And also following the ways of men and their knowledge. God says will he make fools of them that think themselves wise. Several times the bible warns against looking to the stars (space) for answers. I have studied this somewhat before I was a Christian. Now I am a Christian and I know the truth.

The calendar ceases to function, or at least comes to the end of a period of counting.
Nothing but hype type people added the 'end of the world,' end of the end,' or any 'end of anything,' other than the calendar quits counting.
I see the terms 'Bunk,' and so on, stated often here. Remember also folks, the Bible says to watch out for the Bunk callers also.
Couple it with other possible Prophetic happenings that may be on the horizon, and it could (possibility, however slight) play a part in the overall picture of our future (a blade of grass in the overall panorama).
Like my footer states: "Man the wall " folks.

Why???? Hmmmmnn. Well to put it simply 2 prophesies in the bible seem to indicate the time period from 2018 to 2035 is significant. and the 8 years from 2020 to 2028 is where they intersect.
First prophecy....Matthew 24 and the fig tree parable. In that parable we are told that the time from the opening of the firse fig leaf (start) to the end of the end times would be the length of a generation. This generation will not pass is the quote actually. Psalms 90 defines a generation as being 70 to 80 years. So assuming the rebirth of Israel in 1948 was a fig leaf then 80 years is in the spring of 2028.
2nd prophecy. The 3 days of Hosea 6 verses 1 and 2. When you decode this verse it's quite shocking actually. But what it's telling you is this. It was prophesied the ancient Jews and Israelites were to face a 2 day top leval Leviticus 26 curse. But those days are with God. Which according to Psalms 90 and 2nd Peter 3-8 are 1000 years long. This curse was 2000 years long. Followed by a 1000 year "day" of peace and restoration of Israel.
Revelation calls it the 1000 yr reign of the saints. Then the problem is figuring out when it started and why. And the why is in the last couple of verses of the book of Malachi.
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
When Herod killed John the Baptist he did a very bad thing. Jesus Christ himself declared John was Elijah the Prophet. So the act of killing him triggered that curse. And if you look at the history of the past 2000 years you can see they have been serving it ever since. They were denied their "Jewish " messiah. Then their temple was destroyed. And then they lost their country. It's all right there.
So John the Baptist died 1 to 2 years before Jesus Christ. Jesus is said to have died in the years of 25 to 35 AD.
So John died in the year range of 23 to 33 AD. Add 2000 years and the range of where the 2 prophesies intersect is 2023 to 2028.

12/21/12. My mother's birthday, the day after my son's birthday, other than that meaningless to me.
A couple of years ago we were being told to watch out for fall of 2007. And before that there were other dates "set".

I am curious too about this date. I keep seeing presentations about it on the History chanel, and other chanels.
I saw that 12/21/12 is on the aztec or myan calender (not quite sure which one or if either one is right).

Went to the site, and either he, or I, am off by two thousand years.
Harold Camping says the flood was seven thousand years ago, and I say Noah became a sailor five thousand years ago (+-). I only read the one article your reference took me to, but will go deeper into Harold's teaching. If he is correct, we are about to go before the Great White Throne Judgment, in lieu of going into the Millennium. SO, right off the top, me-thinks he is really off in his use of arithmetic factors, and my library, however small, is useless.
I also believe you ask: 'aren't we 'not' to know.....?' You have to read the entire chapter to realize that 'believers,' are supposed to know. Only the non-believers are to be without any concept, or preparation.

I never thought of it that way. But now that I do, I am inclined to think maybe you are right.
I am still trying to figure out how everyone is getting these dates. And wondering where May 21, 2011 is located at in the Bible.

It's the Mayan Calendar, it ends 12/21/12. The calendar is said to be so precise, it forecast solar eclipses 1000 years in advance. Only Gods knows if the date means anything other than the end of the calendar
