There was an old gentleman who attended our church when I was in grade school that had one of those (mid 60s) and at first I thought he really had a short brown snake on his head. It was just one lock of hair that he let get long enough to grease down and wind back and forth over his baldness. UGH!!

Yeah but now they use a spray on color to "hide" the bald spot. I saw the ronco guy spray it on his head once and I have seen people on tv that I really thought used that product. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ To keep this on topic, I don't honestly care how long a guy has his hair. The comb overs are bad news though.

Read verse 1-16. This verse is not taken out of context. Every time someone disagrees with scripture, that is what they say. Did anyone read this chapter? You have to take all of the scriptures or none of them.

Do we determine a society that is in constant rebellion against God determine what He approves and doesn't? I think not. I know God's opinion on the base issue of "long hair". My question is this. I'll ask it, in big bold letters since it keeps getting ignored. Define Long. What determines the length of long? At what point does short become long, is there a "just right" length. ok.....hopefully someone will see that.

Just suppose that short hair for a man is half way down his back. Then long hair must be down to their knees or longer. That means all the women should have hair down to their knees.

The bible shouldn't have to tell you how long is long. And know it dosen't say how long is long. People dont want no one telling them what to do. They say, Dont tell me how to dress, or how long to wear my hair. Thats why they hated Jesus, because he told them about their sin. The bible says you are not your own, you are bought with a price. We cant do what we want. We have to do what he wants. I guess every man with long hair will have to figure out for himself if his hair is too long.

Do you have a clue as to the culture he was addressing? Context is more than the amount of words you read together. Read your whole bible and understand it. One of my favorite quotes is from H.L. Mencken, "For every problem, there is an answer which is simple, elegant, and wrong." The problem is that we take a 2,000 year old document, translate it as best we can into English, and then try to take it at face value without understanding why the document was written in the first place, what were the issues at stake, what were the modes of communication at the time, etc. I believe that the bible means what the original writer wanted the original reader to understand by the text he was writing. I'm not one of those that resorts to arguments like "that was then, this is now, we don't need to pay attention to this part." But.... Passages like this one are difficult to figure out sometimes. On the one hand, there was a rabbinic interpretation method where it would not be uncommon for someone like Paul to use very broad language based on creation literature, appeals to "nature", etc. to make a point and try to resolve issues that at their root were local and time/culture bounded. On the other hand, Paul elsewhere legitimately points to creation literature, appeals to "nature" etc to resolve issues that at their root are eternal and fundamental. How do you ever know the difference? Well, understanding that there was some disagreement within greek culture on appropriate modes of dress during prayer helps. Understanding that short hair on women had a particular meaning in that local culture helps a bit. These things can be clues to help us figure the problem out. Second, we look elsewhere in scripture for confirmation. Hayseed here rightly points out the conflict with the Nazarene rites. To the extent that the issue appears here and not really anywhere else, you have to begin to suspect that Paul is addressing a local issue. People will disagree on this, and it's easy to fall on one side rather than the other. You can make a cogent argument on either side. In such cases, we are admonished not to get our unders in a bunch and agree to disagree.
