ORIGINAL: FearoftheLord Thats why they hated Jesus, because he told them about their sin. The bible says you are not your own, you are bought with a price. We cant do what we want. We have to do what he wants. In that case remember two other verses in 1 Corinthians. "All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any." 1 Cor 6:12 and "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not." 1 Cor 10:23

ORIGINAL: FearoftheLordIt dosen't take much rightly dividing on this subject. The scripture is perfectly clear. Things are not always as perfectly clear as they would seem on the surface. One of my favorite quotes is from H.L. Mencken, "For every problem, there is an answer which is simple, elegant, and wrong." The problem is that we take a 2,000 year old document, translate it as best we can into English, and then try to take it at face value without understanding why the document was written in the first place, what were the issues at stake, what were the modes of communication at the time, etc. I believe that the bible means what the original writer wanted the original reader to understand by the text he was writing. I'm not one of those that resorts to arguments like "that was then, this is now, we don't need to pay attention to this part." But.... Passages like this one are difficult to figure out sometimes. On the one hand, there was a rabbinic interpretation method where it would not be uncommon for someone like Paul to use very broad language based on creation literature, appeals to "nature", etc. to make a point and try to resolve issues that at their root were local and time/culture bounded. On the other hand, Paul elsewhere legitimately points to creation literature, appeals to "nature" etc to resolve issues that at their root are eternal and fundamental. How do you ever know the difference? Well, understanding that there was some disagreement within greek culture on appropriate modes of dress during prayer helps. Understanding that short hair on women had a particular meaning in that local culture helps a bit. These things can be clues to help us figure the problem out. Second, we look elsewhere in scripture for confirmation. Hayseed here rightly points out the conflict with the Nazarene rites. To the extent that the issue appears here and not really anywhere else, you have to begin to suspect that Paul is addressing a local issue. People will disagree on this, and it's easy to fall on one side rather than the other. You can make a cogent argument on either side. In such cases, we are admonished not to get our unders in a bunch and agree to disagree. Well put, bt! We all have to understand the context of what's written. In doing so, you walk away with a deeper meaning of scripture than ever!

This may be off topic, but it sure seems to me, if one applies a "task argument" to this (men bring home the bacon, so they should have no-fuss hair; women raise children, so they should have... long hair??) that women's hair should be short. Raising babies and having them tug on your hair cannot be any more practical than plowing a field and getting hair in your eyes. If one uses that form of argument, then women should have no-fuss (i.e. shorter) hair, too, so that she's not spending too much time styling it in front of the mirror. Oh, and don't forget that long hair on women can lead to vanity, too.

The first is a specific vow to God and the second is someone from a city near Lake Tiberias that means "branch."

Jesus was a Nazarene, not a Nazarite. He did not have long hair.

I think you make a good point that once we become believers that we don't do whatever we want any longer, but what would God have us to do. As far as the hair lengths go I will remain silent now, because I am not sure or not clear on the answers.

ORIGINAL: DaveW There was an old gentleman who attended our church when I was in grade school that had one of those (mid 60s) and at first I thought he really had a short brown snake on his head. It was just one lock of hair that he let get long enough to grease down and wind back and forth over his baldness. UGH!! How did he keep it in place? Superglue?

Then we are in agreement - that whatever the prevailing men's hairstyle was - Christ had it - since in many instances, he escaped by blending in with the crowd. How many Jewish statues do we have of the time? I somehow don't think the Jews were into iconography.

Ok everyone I'm new to forum land and frankly think this is goofy. Hair length at my house consists of my husband, a fine, godly MAN (not some "fancy boy") in every sense of the word who, shock!, has the most gorgeous mane you've ever seen.Oh, it used to be short for 35 years but after getting fed up with the cowlick from well, a really funny looking cow he let it go to the shock and amazement of many. Several friends have said it made them deal with some legal issues they were having. Glad to help. I used to have long flowing locks too but, imagine! children and hormones changed all that. Yes, my hair is shorter than my husband's. I told him the other day should I ever need a wig his hair is mine! He keeps it neat and well groomed, has a respectable job in the community and you know what??? We are soooooo enjoying our freedom in Christ. Really! Try it!

ORIGINAL: Artsie Ok everyone ... my husband ... has the most gorgeous mane you've ever seen...and you know what??? We are soooooo enjoying our freedom in Christ. Really! Try it! Us guys with short hair have tried it and enjoy the freedom from spending time keeping our hair in place, freedom from it being in the way and in our eyes, freedom from greasy rats-tails, freedom from danger of it getting caught in rotating equipment, freedom from having it grabbed by an attacker, freedom from even thinking of our appearance (most of the time). No biblical principle is a burden. The truth sets us free. I am not saying your husband is not free - but he is no more free than the rest of us. In my judgment he is slightly less free.
