I would stay away from antihistamine/drying type meds, like Sudafed, since you're so early in your nursing relationship. Robitussin or Dimetapp should be okay, but ask you doctor to be sure. A hot shower and Vicks are always okay.

I always take Tylenol for aches and pains and headaches, and Vicks for stuffy noses etc. And a humidifier.

Donna, isn't Dimetapp an antihistamine? I remember taking it for runny noses way back in the day.

When chase is working at crawling, he spits up a lot, is that probably because he is working so hard, and he's on his belly?

Both my kids spit up a lot when they got exercise if they just nursed/had a bottle. Pretty sure that's the norm.
That's awesome you got that on video. I love to look at TImmy's old videos of his firsts.

I believe there are several different formulas. She'll have to read the back.

Jessica, is Judah refusing solid foods? Nathan is, although he is still nursing, and that's about the only thing he'll take now. Temp is staying moderate though, not going above 101 for now.

Sweet moment. Nathan woke up a little while ago from another nap, and dH went upstairs to fetch him, but I didn't hear anything for a few minutes, so I snuck upstairs myself. dH was lying on the bed, with Nathan passed out on his chest.

Nathan doesn't often do that; he snuggles for a bit sometimes, but even as an infant he almost never slept on our chests.

Awww...that is sweet!

I know in one of the threads I said I don't buy ahead when it comes to clothes for Hunter. Well, today I hit a deal at Old Navy that I couldn't pass up so I bought ahead. He has always fit in Old Navy clothes pretty much in line with his age, but since their stuff runs small I always buy the next size up so he can wear it for awhile. Anyway, they had a bin of long sleeve graphic shirts marked down to $1.49 and I just could not beat that. I dug and found as many 2T as I could for when it starts getting cold again, I found 5 shirts, and paid under $8 for all five. It was so exciting! Now if only I could find clothes like that for me .

One time I found a maternity top at Old Navy for $1.98, I didn't even try it on, and it ended up being my favorite.

I love sales on kids clothes. I found some deals the other day that were better than the second hand stores!

Kohls is also having some really good deals on kids clothes right now. The racks are packed with clothes marked down to 85-90% off. Its all winter clothes and I dug for a while, but I didn't find anything for him that would fit come winter time. I did on the other hand find a few items for my friend who is having a little girl, that was fun shopping for girl clothes.

Nathan's temp spiked again this afternoon, and Kaiser asked us to come in. There's apparently nothing wrong with him except for the fever, but I learned something interesting. Withholding medicine from a child with a fever does not help the body fight infection in a any way. Giving a baby Tylenol isn't going to slow down how fast they recover.

So, they recommend giving medicine for fevers over 100 and giving the baby some relief. For an older baby with a fever over 102, they recommended alternating Motrin and Tylenol.

Unfortunately, Nathan's grandparents are arriving from Florida tomorrow, and we're supposed to attend a big family dinner at SIL's. But they have two small girls, and doc told us not to bring Nathan around small children until he's been fever-free for 24 hours. So we canceled, but told them they're welcome here after dinner.

That's what our docs said too when our two were small. I always gave Calpol (like your Tylenol) if the temperature got to 100.

Jessica, glad to hear that Judah is feeling better. I hope you get plenty of rest, or as much as possible!

Laura, thanks. Nathan's temperature was down this morning, too. He was much quieter and more cuddly then usual, and he just went down for an early morning nap, but he seems better. We'll see if his temp goes back up tonight. I can't really explain it; 103.3 seems to high for a teething temp, and he's never spiked a temp before for teething.

He's nursing very well, though, and eating some solids. He nursed so much last night, that he soaked his diaper completely.

Ruth - it is SO weird - Judah and Nathan sound identical right now!! (((hugs for you)))
Judah was fine when I got him this morning - his temp was normal, he was happy, etc.
This afternoon it changed and he's been between 101 and 103.4 all evening.
He isn't eating, and he was spitting up his milk - though it really did seem like spitting up, not throwing up. He drank a sippy cup of water/apple juice and enjoyed that. It stayed down.
He is sleeping now. I am going to give him motrin when I go to bed.
I'm not sure what to do - I don't *feel* like I need to take him in, and yet I feel so badly for him!! And my back is killing me from holding him so much Tomorrow would be day 3 of a temperature though, so I guess if the temp is there in the afternoon I'll take him. It's odd to me that he was fine in the morning!

How is Nathan doing right now?

Nathan is sleeping now, and soon I will be too, I hope. His fever went down with medication. He actually ate some dinner, which was encouraging.

I'd take Judah in, if he's still feverish tomorrow. I hope he's feeling better soon!

I had a ton of girls over this evening and I felt so bad because Judah wanted nothing to do with them. That is so unlike him as he's been around these girls a TON since birth and normally adores them. He just wanted me Poor baby.

What confuses is me is what do I do if he's fine in the morning (like today!) and then his temp goes up about 3-ish (like today!) I would have to go in to the ER, it'd be too late to get an appointment. Is the ER the best place to go in with 'just' a feverish baby? (I just feel like they would brush me off, that's my concern)

The doc couldn't squeeze you in for a 10 minute check? Do you have an advice line you can call?

I can't make the decision for you. You know your baby best. I'm sorry, I wish I could be of more help, except to say a prayer for you guys.

If he gets dehydrated (you said he was spitting up a lot), then definitely take him in. If you see any other symptoms besides fever, or if the fever cannot be controlled with medication, then do certainly take him in.

A person's temp will normally go up through the course of a day. It will be higher in afternoon/evening, then drop as you sleep.

Oh - I just meant that if he is fine in the morning I wouldn't want to call the Dr to make an appointment, and yet if tomorrow is a repeat of today the temp wouldn't get high until the booking office is closed.

I *think* I need to call fairly early in the morning to make an appointment. I guess I'll monitor him through the night and make my decision based on that.
He was pretty bad last night - I was up till 3 am and he was moaning in his sleep. I came close to taking him in to the ER last night just because of the moans (he is a quiet sleeper, they sounded like moans of pain/discomfort.)
I hate my hubby being gone and the baby being sick. Paul is the best parent to deal with a sick child! I know it's suppose to be the mum, but it's so Paul's thing.
I miss Paul

He had meds before going down at 9, and right now his temp is 103.7
I'm worried about him.
Is there any sense in waking him up and taking him to the ER?
I feel like I should be doing something to make him better.

If it was me, I'd be telephoning the "out of hours" doctor, and he'd come out to my house. I am guessing you can't do that, so if I didn't have the doctor option, I personally would wake my child and take him to ER. Can you phone them first to let them know you're coming?

An alternative to try before doing that could be to wake him and give him a lukewarm bath, to try to get his temperature down. That would also give you a chance to check him over to make sure there's no rash anywhere, his neck isn't stiff, he isn't oversensitive to light etc.

I called a nurse hotline and spoke with a nurse. It wasn't for our hospital as ours doesn't have one.
She is well acquainted with the military hospital though and said I won't be able to get a same day appointment, so my only choice is to go to the ER.
She said to let him sleep, and if he wakes up in pain or has a higher temp to take him in right away, otherwise just take him in when we get up tomorrow.

I am honestly surprised that she did not think that 103.7 was high enough already.

When are you planning to take his temperature again?

Also, have you removed his clothes and his bedclothes (blankets etc)?

he's wearing light weight clothes.

I just took his temp before calling her, and will take it again at 3 am.

She went through a huge list of things she wanted to know if he was suffering from, and he had none of them, so she said because he had none of those indicators she didn't think I needed to rush in.

I really think he needs to sleep - he hasn't done much of it today. If I take him out to the ER he won't sleep there either.

If it was me, I'd gently remove the clothes and leave him in just his diaper. I'd also be checking his temperature hourly.

I really don't want to worry you, but sleeping is not necessarily an indicator that all is well as there is one particular illness which has lethargy as a symptom, which mean the child would likely stay asleep.

I am off to bed now, and will be praying for him (and for you).
