One word, a lifetime of experience to get there.

What does that one word mean to you personally? The Lord is dealing iwth me quite a bit about it right now and I wonder for the church, what does this word mean to you? What do you feel the Lord tells us in His Word about it? How are you walking what He tells us about it? Do you wonder how to become more humble-where does that rank in your desires for spiritual growth?

I'm curious, as it's a big area of focus for me right now, I look forward to your responses!

i have been reading thru genesis and thought of the passage where abraham and lot were deciding who would live where in the promised land. God had made the promise to abraham to give him all the land, yet when abraham and lot had to seperate abraham gave first choice to the land to lot. abraham humbled himself before lot even though he had God's promise to the land.

for myself i wonder would i humble myself before other people and trust the promise of God, or would i claim my right to the promise. just my thoughts.

Humility is a relational word.

Relational with humans:
It means that I am not superior to any other human being. It also means that I am not inferior either.

Relational with God:
God is my creator and He is infinitely wiser and more powerful and more loving than any of His creations. He is my Heavenly Father, not a celestial genii to grant my desires. He is sovereign and I am subject to His will. (This is just the surface.)

Humility: When I get really, really small and allow God to be really, really big! It's seeing me and God in our rightful positions...me-insignificant and He-of the utmost significance. It's when I want what He wants more than I want what I want. It's when all the focus is on Him and none is on me.

It means to me to not make it all about you, not always having to comment on you experience, when someone is teling you thiers. Submit to one another, asking forgivness if a fuss, for offense, even if you are not all wrong. Understanding there are two sides to every story. A quite walk, but, livin g out-loud if that makes senses, Submittng to each other in the fear of God. I cor 13, shows this attitude. Not easy, but the Lord is dealing ith me also. Turning thre other cheek, forgot that one.

The way of humility is this: self-control, prayer, and thinking yourself inferior to all creatures.

Humble means recognizing that God is in control of the affairs of men. Humilty is the trait a humble person exhibits.

Someone wrote a song "Little Is Much if God Is in It". The key point of the song is that God often places one in a mission field that is not seen by men. Only a humble person can do that. The music and lyrics of the song are here:

Humility, is one of the most important yet one of the most overlooked characteristic a Christian should seek after.

Since Satan's numerous "I wills" (Can't remember where they are, maybe Isaiah) are the essence of pride, a Christian should seek deeper and deeper humility - the opposite.

What helped me sooo much was Andrew Murray's book entitled "Humility". He presented humility in such a beautiful way and showed how ugly pride is that, for a number of years, I shrunk from the hideousness of pride and longed for the beauty of humility.

Oh, how I need to read that little book again and pray because the Lord has had to humble completely so much the last few years because ugly, horrible pride crept back into my heart and mind

~There are three great motives that urge us to humility. It becomes me as a creature, as a sinner, as a saint. The first we see in the heavenly hosts, in unfallen man, in Jesus as Son of Man. The second appeals to us in our fallen state, and points out the only way through which we can return to our right place as creatures. In the third we have the mystery of grace, which teaches us that, as we lose ourselves in the overwhelming greatness of redeeming love, humility becomes to us the consummation of everlasting blessedness and adoration~ Andrew Murray

Humility, one of the hardest things for men to grasp yet we as born again belivers can have the help of the Holy Spirit to teach us how we can be humble in the sight of our Lord and others. We are taught by our Lord to esteme others as better than ourselves. And that we are to be servants. This is an attitude as well as a way of living. I know many have ways of expressing it but if the heart is not in it then it is false.

Just the opinion of a small town preacher

If our hearts are not in any of the spiritual graces, then they are false. Only Christ's Love in us can express true humility.

The word humility is related to the word "hummus" which means "dirt."
To me humility means remembering that God made us out of dirt. The only thing that makes us living, purposeful, valuable beings is that God breathed his life into us. Living in a constant state of remembering that God makes us who we are, that we are nothing on our own, yet God loves us as his children.
That is humility to me because it points to the one who is truly great--God.
