I haven't read the article mostly because I read the posts here first and I am quite frankly offended by the view that so many take on California and it's residents.

There are good and bad homeschoolers, private schools and public schools in all 50 states.

There are also attacks on Christians in all 50 states.

At the moment, the legal climate in CA is horrendous for God fearing parents. This is a fact. All Christians should be aware and alert about what is being done to prevent parents from passing their religious beliefs on to their children. Pointing out the problems and attacks taking place in CA is not an attack against people who live in CA, it is pointing out the attacks on people that live in CA. Attacks by their own government no less!
No one has said that Californians deserve this treatment or that they are being punished. [&:]

Now please, let's get back to the topic.

Here's an article in the LA Times about this ruling. They seem to think it unlikely that any school districts are going to go after home schoolers before the matter is settled.

Too sick to my stomach to get far, but will tackle it en toto this weekend.

In fact, I started the discussion to find out what other people knew that I did not, and I have learned a lot. I knew nothing about the family, for example, but Sunnymom filled me in.

I appreciate the link to the LA Times article, and also finding out that others are blogging and that there is something called the Pacific Justice Institute fighting for the right of Californians to home school and otherwise parent according to their conscience without interference from the state.

I didn't get through it. I was shocked and upset by the document and the foundational beliefs on which is held the opinions. This is not what our country was founded on. The idea that the government should demand that children be sent away for however long the government deems appropriate to learn what the government deems appropriate, even when (perhaps especially when) the parents object, is a very serious violation of liberty and religious freedom that our country was founded on.

I think it would be interesting if all of the kids that are going to have to return to the government schools decided to purposely fail the state exams, bringing down the public school test scores even more. As a child, I would have been flaming mad to be forced by the government to go to any school, and would have seriously considered this as an option.

All these responses are so interesting. My friends and I are not scared. We still homeschool and don't believe this will really go anywhere. It is mainly about abuse to a child. And, quite frankly, I know heads of school districts (3 of them) here in CA. They know for a fact that their schools/classrooms could not hold all the homeschoolers if they came there.

That is an interesting point.

When registering my dd for school here, the VP was telling me how they were having problems with overcrowding because of how good the school is (second in the area academically) and the only thing that popped into my head was Shania Twain singing That Don't Impress Me Much! Fortunately, I didn't say that out loud though! LOL!

However, overcrowding is an issue that they would definately have to deal with and I don't think they want to go down that road.

I just got an email update from HSLDA. They are writing a brief on behalf of their members to this court.

In our local high school, not all the freshmen get lockers. The school district is a "good one" and the freshmen that come in with a permit from another district have to carry all their books, etc. around with them every day.

Someone else posted a thread on this in the Current Events folder, and the next poster said they were glad.[&o][:(] I tried to link, but it didn't work..lol, I've mastered linking to something outside of the forums, but not within, oh well.



BTW, a central Californian here checking in to say that the homeschoolers here are aware of this event, and that it is something that could be a problem, but it hasn't really had any affect on any homeschoolers I know yet. Also, the central counties, are much more conservative, and much more homeschool friendly that places like Los Angelses county and the Bay area. However, I know state law can still affect everyone.

As a Californian living in the state's capital I am furious! There just aren’t even the words! And my daughter isn't even home schooled. We home schooled her through a charter school from Kindergarten thru fourth grade because we lived in a bad neighborhood and didn't like the schools there. But when we moved to a good area we put her in public school. But I have friends who aren’t even Christians that home school there autistic son because the schools don’t have the resources to do an adequate job.

As a previous poster pointed out, there are conservative parts of California. I mean, Rush Limbaugh launched his career here in Sacramento. Sadly, because of the massive populations in LA and the Bay Area our voices are squelched. Many people laughed at me six months ago when they past a law in my county (with no vote) that you could only burn wood in your fireplace on "burn days" or you'd be fined. I said, "Watch out! We're losing our freedoms! What's next?" Well, here it is. I'd hate to say it, but to all those people who laughed at me, I told you so! And if we're silent on this one it's only going to get worse. What's next? You can only learn about God from a state licensed minister?

For those of you who don't live here, good for you! If God didn't make it clear to me that I'm supposed to be here, I would leave in a heart beat. We are over taxed, burdened down with laws and regulations and have no voice in the liberal legislature. Thank God the world is not my home!

I do have an idea for Californians to fight this thing. But it would mean they would they have to come out of denial and face reality. (Something Californians don’t do very well.) I propose that all the parents who have children in the public schools (like myself) and oppose this decision pull their children out until it is reversed. Do a little Martin Luther King Jr. thing here. Hit them peacefully in the pocket book. That'll get there attention real quick! California pays schools something like $7000 a year per student. If enough parents kept their children at home you'd even have the teachers’ union screaming to reverse the decision. If the law and the legislature won't speak for us, then we need to speak up for ourselves. I'm just a little ticked about this court ruling.

PS. My formerly home schooled daughter is still one of the best readers in her class.

That is a good idea, for those who can afford to do it.

Jenny- that totally cracked me up. 'A lack of human interaction...' uhm- my whole family is human. Really. And we even interact. Especially at McDonald's.[:D]

It's getting better- they met a dysfunctional homeschooler who TALKED LOUD and cursed at their computer.

I am quite sure that NO ONE IN THIS FOLDER has ever RAISED THEIR VOICE or cursed an electronic device. Never. [;)]

There are some things I think we need to remember about this ruling- there is alot of emotional, hysterical reporting, no one has the whole picture since this family has had problems for two decades, and the ruling impacts private and charter schools, who are NOT going to take this lying down either.

I bet those judge are starting to feel like they stepped on a hornet's nest. Maybe they'll learn somethin'- like don't mess with moms and dads who are dedicated to making sure their kids have the opportunity to experience a decent education.
