Not buying gas for a day or not buying a particular brand for a day has been used several times and it doesn't work.
Asking people to stay home for a day wouldn't work either. People need to go to work, doctor appointments, etc. The fact they they are unhappy about the gas prices isn't going to change what needs to be done that day.
I suggest using and posting on http://www.GasBuddy.com to advertise the cheapest gas stations and to avoid the high prices stations.

Still filling up--for now. I hope it doesn't come to a point where I can't, because I've always looked at it like this: I'm going to have to buy the gas sometime anyway; it doesn't really save any money not to fill up. The savings come if I can keep from filling up as often. So instead of not filling up, I'm trying to stretch a full tank longer by driving less whenever I can.

the problem is that there is an increased demand for oil since china and india economies are growing so that cars are more readily available
another issue is that there was a suv/truck boom a few years ago - carmakers made money on those so people were encouraged to buy them, well they aren't very fuel efficient. Some people do need them for their jobs but not everyone.
Expect prices to keep going up
There are alternatives to regular gasoline cars (biofuel diesels and natural gas cars, electric cars) however they aren't easily available yet.

I was doing a report for school on Nixon today and laughed when I read that there was a big uproar when OPEC raised the price of a barrel fom $3.00 to $11.75

An interesting point my friend brought up is that we are just catching up with the rest of the world in terms of gas prices. For the past 30 years we have been skimping out on prices while Europe has been paying $5.00+ a gallon.

Our speeds limits were raised to 70mph thanks to our government. That is what I drive. I still get 30+ mpg. Drive any slower and you may get driven off the road. People are crazy here.

Now I wish I had gone with a 4-cyl instead of a V-6. Yes, it hurts to fill up, but I don't really have any other choice.

So yeah, it was a big deal. We went to sleep paying .25/gal and woke up paying .50/gal. Doesn't sound like a big deal now unless you put it in perspective from today's viewpoint. How about if we went to bed one night paying $2.85 and woke up and the price overnight had moved to $5.70? I think that would cause an uproar, too.
It is interesting to note that just prior to our invasion of Iraq, oil was selling for $25 a barrel. I'm sure there's no connection, just find it interesting.

We are on a fixed income. Last years cost of living increase was 1.8%. The cost of living in our area increased 7%... Our COLA this year was a generous 2.5%. Probably around a quarter of what the actual change will be.
We have a minivan that is able to run on E85. (15% gasoline + 85% ethanol alcohol) We would have to drive 187 miles to get to a place that sells it... we get about 320 miles to a tank of gasoline, and the E85% gives you 18% more power as well as decreasing fuel economy at the same rate. I'd have to buy a half tank of gas to get there. Then I could fill up and make it home. With NO other driving, I wouldn't be able to get back there without buying more gas... The stuff is selling for about $2.90 a gallon anyway, so it would actually cost me more than gasoline...
It would cost me about $200 to get a permit to distill my own alcohol. The still would cost me $300 to $500 to build. I could buy corn for a few bucks a bushel, and could start actually saving money after about 6 years... (But who knows what corn is going to cost by then, anyways? It's a lose-lose situation for everybody but the gas companies. (Trust me... they aren't losing a dime! Profits are actually at record highs for them.) But, that's the American way, right?
The government ceased to be by the people and for the people long ago. Now it is for those with money and at the people... I just want to let people know that the artificial support of the economy will only last as long as the big corporations can keep sucking the money out of the little people. Once that is done, it's gonna get really, really ugly.

its not hard for me to fill up. i drive about 75mi/day for the commute with my honda civic. it gets about 35mi/gallon. i'm single and still living at home not paying rent...so my expenses are very low.
i have always considered rising gas prices to be a good thing overall. it encourages people to drive less, and drive more fuel efficient cars, which would encourage car makers to produce even more fuel efficient cars. and of course, when people drive less or drive more fuel efficient cars, thats less of an impact on air quality/pollution.

On the flip side of that, the other night my husband (who is a truck driver) and said that the price of diesel is killng the trucking industry. He said that diesel where he works is over $4.00 a gallon.

After the runup in early 2007, I've adjusted the budget and so far no problems with this year's run-up in prices. Currently in Anchorage the most common price for regular is $3.349. Using the Fred Meyers rewards Mastercard properly, I paid $3.199. And that's with the lowest state gas taxes int he nation and no sales tax (Alaska doesn't have a sales tax - just localities do).
Meanwhile, in Bethel, which gets their fuel by barge in the summer time, the price ranges from $4.64 at the barge company's dock to $4.98 at a station in town.
Gas is slightly cheaper in Fairbanks than Anchorage because the North Pole Refinery is just outside of town.

I adjusted my budget last year to $50 to cover the rise in cost. But I am at $50 to fill my tank. Luckily I work closer to home, so i am not using a full tank each week.
But it does limit our day trips with my husband. :(

If I remember correctly, that includes a lot of other taxes for Europeans in that price.

No, it is quite possible to fill up. I generally get a full tank 1-2 times a week.
Like someone else posted, I drive 35-45 miles a day one way. My job is in one city, I live in another. There are people that I could car-pool with, however the last time I car pooled it was pretty hard. It took my travel time from 40 minutes a trip to 60-70. The days I drove, I had to pick up the guy, he lived the wrong way from my house toward the city. So I would drive 8 minutes to get him, then 8 back the other way, plus the extra 5-10 minutes to drop him off.
Now my hours are less set, some nights I work until 7:00, others I can get out at 5:30. So asking someone to carpool with that, it not fair to them.
As for a gas out, not purchasing gas one day.... that is useless. Now if you really want to impact the gas providers, park your car for a day/week. Ride the bus, walk, bike to work. That would have a whole lot larger impact, plus it would help YOUR pocket directly.

Thankfully, I live close enough to my work and am able to commute by bicycle a couple of times a week...riding about 13 miles round trip. This definitely stretches the gas, and I feel less burdened driving on the weekends if I have to, with my "extra" gas.
I truly have compassion on people who have to drive such long distances.

The gas prices have not stopped us, it is an expense that must be paid whether it's $3 a gal. or $5 a gal. There used to be a day that it was cheaper to drive but now you can fly for just as much if not cheaper and you get flight miles to use for free flights.

$3.42 a gallon on my way to work tonight, in Indianapolis, and it's not even summer yet. We're planning a trip to Florida and Virginia to visit family this summer, probably in August. It's an important trip that we really need to take, but I'm dreading what it's going to cost us.

$3.49 a gallon here in south Georgia. I just ran out fuel in my diesel tank, and I dread filling it (it holds 150 gallons). I use this for my tractor. Diesel is over $4 a gallon.
