I have ground various grains before for recipes. The only one that I soak is my barley for barley bread and all the others are dry (raw dry) so I'd think these would be dry too.

What kind of grinder do you use?

The blender attachment to my processor, or the spice grinder. Kinda depends what's clean and what's handy ~ or rather what I'm grinding. Because the barley is soaked in buttermilk (or a sub) and water is added) it's best in the blender.

Actually, I just got a new processor at Christmas and am still getting used to it ~ I'm not even sure it has a spice grinder (my old blender did). If it hasn't, I'll just use my blender attachment.

My processor isn't very powerful and the grains can make a racket as they whizz round (don't try doing it with a migraine!) but it works pretty well.

Shar-Mar....do you live far from the grocery store??? Could you get an ice chest and buy a bag of ice for the cold food?

Tina . . .

First - I love your new handle (although since I haven't been around the Singles folder in a while, I don't know how "new" it actually is).

To answer your question, I don't drive; and so to get to the grocery store, I either walk (which is a 30-minute walk, each way), or I walk there and take the bus back home. I only take the bus back when I don't have more groceries than is comfortable to carry for a few minutes, because taking the bus back can take up to one / two hours (depending on which grocery store I use . . . there's another one that's a 45-minute walk from where I live; it's the better of the two, so I go there periodically as well).

I have my trike, but it's been out of commission since November (bad tube and/or tire), and I haven't been able to get it fixed (long, tiring story . . . oops that pun was totally unintentional).

Oh . . .

I do buy cold foods (meats, eggs).

I just don't think that I could get home without icecream melting.

That sounds very yummy.

Steve; thanks for posting it!

I don't think I'll be making it anytime soon though.
I don't buy icecream because I haven't figured out how to get it home hassle-free without melting.

I live in Az and I have the same problem. I do bring a cooler with ice like FB suggested, I also have them bag all frozen/refrig items together. They also have special bags they sell that are supposed to hold in cold/heat etc. and I use these for quick trips, they sell them at Trader Joes.

Thanks...it's about a month old, so ya didn't miss much! It's certainly good to see you back in these parts!!!

How about one of those coolers on wheels? Then you could get a bungee cord and tie the rest of the bags on top!! (Of course, it sounds ideal on paper...)
When I was a catering delivery driver, I seriously ran out of gas about a mile from my delivery location. I ran out at an inconvenient spot, so I arranged for another driver to meet me at the gas station on the corner about 1/3 mile away. So, I loaded up my dolly with food for 20 people, and proceeded to walk towards the gas station so he could deliver the food. Fortunately some nice ladies saw me, and drove me to the gas station. (They were older ladies, and apparently customers! lol) Hey....just like the postman we'll do whatever it takes to deliver!

Wow; that was a lot of food! I'm glad the ladies gave you a ride.

Thanks for the welcome back!

Ideally, I just need to figure out how to get my trike fixed.** Then I could just trike to either grocery store (and do it much quicker than I could walking or taking the bus). I could then also buy more groceries at one time (because I could just put the groceries in the basket that's at the back of the trike).

As to icecream, it's just as well that it's not convenient for me to buy; it probably would last long if I were to bring it into my house. LOL

**I just realized that I could probably order a tire and tube online and fixed the goofy thing myself.

And to keep this thread on topic, I have recipes that I follow, but I also like to make up things.

Last week I cooked way more black beans than I should have, so I had a lot of leftovers.

A couple of days later, I put the remaining beans in a pot and added a couple of cans of chopped unsalted tomatoes (along with their liquid), a chopped onion, some cumin, garlic powder, sea salt, red wine vinegar, ground mustard, a jar of salsa, about a handful of chopped dried parsley, a couple of chopped celery stalks, some steamed chicken and a little bit of water.

I simmered it on low for a couple of hours. It was quite a very yummy soup.

The next day, I boiled some whole wheat pasta and then spooned some of the soup (which was now more like a stew) over the pasta.

Just found this thread!

Although I mostly cook for more than myself, I tend to cook "by portions"

Here is a recipe that you may enjoy. I made it last night, in fact:

Shrimp Quasi-Fajitas (no charcoal... so cooked in skillet)

Per serving measurements

8 medium Shrimp, shelled and deveined with tails removed

1/4 sliced red bell pepper

1/4 sliced red onion

Fajita Seasoning Packet (you will not use the full packet)

Veg Oil

Lime juice

In skillet, warm oil. Add veggies and sprinkle with enough fajita seasoning to lightly cover. Stir fry until warmed through. Increase temperature below skilllet and add shrimp. Again, sprinkle with fajita seasoning (I was more liberal on the shrimp). Cook until pink. Turn off heat, liberally squeeze lime juice on top.

Makes two fajita tacos.

That's it!

I served them in flour tortillas. We had black beans and guacamole with it. I served shredded lettuce, sour cream, shredded cheddar and jarred salsa on the side.

I was the hero.

Oh, Tina . . .

You may or may not care, but I'm gonna tell ya anyway.

So yesterday I made the decision to buy a tire and tube (for my trike) online and then go from there. As I was going to and coming home from the grocery store this morning, I'm mentally trying to figure out how I would go about doing what would be necessary with such tube and tire to make my trike operable again.

A couple blocks from my house (as I was coming home), the man who mows my yard stopped as asked me why I wasn't riding my trike. After I told him, he asked me a few questions, and then said, "I'll be by sometime in the next few days to fix your trike."

Our Lord is so good!

Honestly, I could probably do it myself once I figured everything out, but I just though it was the neatest gift that He decided my lawn-friend should do it instead.

Now.

What in the world does that have to do with a cooking thread?

Well, I'll tell ya . . .

I'm now trying to decide whether to bake him brownies or oatmeal raisin cookies.

That is sooo cool, Shar-Mar! The Lord provides!

And I personally vote on you providing brownies. Some don't like raisins..

If it was with ground meat and potatoes, it was probably piccadillo. Yummy!

Here ya go:

Piccadillo Taco Filling (per portion)

1/4 pound ground beef (or turkey or pork...)
1 small potato, very small diced
1/2 small onion, small diced
1/2 fresh jalapeno (NOT jarred, pickled)
1/2 tsp. cumin (comino)--- I like the flavor and tend to use more than this
1/2 tsp. ground chili powder
1/2 tsp. black pepper
2 cloves garlic minced
Salt
Pepper
2 tablespoons tomato sauce
water

In a skillet, cook onions until translucent in oil. Add potatoes and fry until become golden. Add ground meat, and all spices.

Cook until meat is crumbly and brown. Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup water and tomato sauce. Stir well, cover and turn down heat.

Simmer for at least five minutes, or until potatoes are tender and most of the water has evaporated.

Serve in flour tortillas with the same condiments used for the shrimp fajitas.

(The mixture should look sort of like a soft hash)

Makes three really full tacos.

I only soak the grains for barley bread ~ and the recipe calls for overnight soaking. I simply pour the buttermilk over the barley, cover and put it in the fridge.

Then I add water and blitz it. I'll post the recipe if you want ~ it's a dense loaf but doesn't contain any yeast or wheat and tastes real good. I've made it with yogurt too (also very good!).

I've seen a grain grinder which sounds like fun ~ and would probably be better than the blender for dry grains. Am thinking about it but need to shop around to check prices.

I think I sense a curry coming on. I found a jar of curry sauce and will add some meat, onions and beans (out of a tin) to it. I've been through my kitchen cupboards recently ~ which is where the beans and the curry sauce comes from ~ and am trying to clear them. Give me 6 months and it may be done

I would love the recipe for barley bread, please.

(Says the person is phasing flour products out of her life, again).
heehee

But really, I would like the recipe.

But then you used bean flour (isn't that what started this conversation? ).

I buried my recipe folder yesterday but need to dig it up so will do so when I go downstairs and post it (probably tomorrow).
