Use Mandarin oranges. They're the perfect size and taste. They mix well with Balsamic vinegar, too.

ourgreatestSource -> RE: Cooking for One - The Singles Food Thread (3/17/2008 10:36:46 PM)

Yummy...and I enjoy raisins when there is carrots around and now Iam addicted to cranberry all over my salads and veggies when it goes good. And orange family I love mandarines with spinash salads and oriental salads too as mandarines goes so well with crunchy stuff...yummy!

LOL, yep, as long as it's food based, to stay on topic.

shemaromans -> RE: Cooking for One - The Singles Food Thread (3/17/2008 11:01:07 PM)

Staying on topic, how long can meals stay in the fridge before they go bad? I have an issue with food that's more than a couple of days old. As a single, this often presents a problem.

That's a reason I don't buy a lot of fresh produce. I can never use it all up before it goes bad, and I hate throwing out food.

I also get nervous when meals are in the fridge for more than about 3 days. They are probably ok, but you never know. Maybe heating them up for a long time would kill off any nasty things.

shawke -> RE: Cooking for One - The Singles Food Thread (3/17/2008 11:08:46 PM)

Butter is another thing. How long does it last in the fridge? I'm lucky if I use one stick a year, but you can't buy just one and you end up wasting the rest. Can it be frozen?

utilityfielder -> RE: Cooking for One - The Singles Food Thread (3/17/2008 11:14:19 PM)

I may be living on the edge here, but I keep leftovers for a week or more. As long as they don't start having a bad smell then I can eat it.

Speaking of keeping vegetables, does anyone use the keeping bags that they advertise on TV?

I can't help with this one. I'm a big baking enthusiast and always run out of butter. Maybe you could split a box with someone who also doesn't use a lot of it.

I usually don't trust those commercials, so I haven't tried the bags. Vegetables and fruits don't stick around too long in my fridge anyway, though.

Good idea! I know whom I can give it to.

I never buy anything from a TV commercial. Most of the stuff is junk and I don't want to get on anybodies mailing list. I would like to see a consumer report test on the product and then buy it in a store.

Yes, you can freeze butter just fine. I only keep a couple sticks in the fridge and the rest stays in the freezer until needed.

Do you ever shop online?

I imagine that you could locate many handy kitchen gadgets and appliances online that benefit single cookers. (How's that for staying on topic? [:)])

Cool, thanks! Does it keep indefinitely?

LOL. I have not bought any kitchen gadgets on-line, just electronics and photography gear. Both from Ebay and on-lines stores.

The cookbook chart says up to 2 months, but I know plenty of people who've kept it in there 6 or so months (at least).

agapetos -> RE: Cooking for One - The Singles Food Thread (3/18/2008 12:02:04 AM)

Leeks ~ goes well with cheese.

Butter ~ cut it into smaller pieces if you really don't use a lot and wrap it well and then freeze it.

Yep! I love it. I can't drive and sometimes the things I want are too heavy to lug around on a bus. I've grocery shopped online too, making sure I stock up on plenty of tinned food.

Home delivery guys hate me[:D]
