Terri, is your dog smiling? That is adorable!

He is smiling.

We adopted him a few years ago. He was abused and not a happy dog. I went outside with him a bit ago and sat down and he just crawled into my lap and was giving kisses. He is the most loving caring dog in the world. If i'm upset or sick he is right by my side. I'll never forget the time I was puking and he started barking and woke my parents up so they could come help me out of the floor. If anything ever happens to him i'll be crushed. As my dad says "he's my brother".

I certainly agree cats and dogs have personalities, as to being conscious of being a cat or a dog? Well, maybe dogs are, but cats, uhm not so much. I'm pretty sure cats still think they are gods-as the Egyptians worshiped them as!

My kitty Princess F is a Fabulous though reserved and shy lady. I can't force her to show affection, but learned to love her just the way she is.

Yes, each pet, cat or dog, has their own distinctive personality.

I don't demand from my kitty perfection, but it would be nice if she were more playful, energetic, affectionate rather than napping all day, holding back affection from me and only consuming machine. I am scared she would put on weight eventually. Kitty, c'mon move, get up!!!

Absolutely they do!

My Ari is a big silver main coon and he's full of personality. Sometimes he's coniving and sly, sometimes sweet and loving. Terribly inquisitive and smart. He loves one-on-one attention and gets very jealous.

My Melody is sweet, gentle, and loves any attention.

My Baby is a free-spirit, independent, and meek.

My Buddy is just a big ole' love absorber. He's a little skiddish, but very sweet and funny.

Of course pets have personalities. They don't have souls, but they do have personalities.

I don't know if they know "cat" or "dog" the way we do, but I do believe they recognize their own species. I think that is why usually animals don't eat their own kind. I know it happens sometimes but not usually. Except baby eagles kill each other, and so do twin hyenas, and frogs will eat their own baby tadpoles, sad. Anyway, back to domesticated pets....

When I was end of high school/early college, a stray was wandering around next door. The mom told her teenage son to get rid of the dog, so the son threw the dog in our yard and broke its leg. It was scared and we fed it, and got its leg treated, and adopted her, and she was such a good dog. At first she chewed a lot, but she got over that. She loved to catch weeds in the air when we were weeding. She was a good watchdog. Her name was Talitha. All but one one time if I took her for a walk, she would hold it in and never poop until we got home. If I took her for a walk, and stopped by at a friend's house, I could tell her to stay there, and she would stay in that EXACT spot the whole time. She was well trained by my younger sister. When I went way to college, she was so excited to see me again when I came back. She died about nine years ago. Our neighbor was poisoning gophers and Talitha ate one. She got sick. My mom took her to the vet and the vet said nothing was wrong. She got sicker, and this time the vet admitted something was wrong, and figured out she was poisoned, but then it was too late to do anything for her. If I wasn't a christian here would be where I would call the vet a not nice name. While she was dying, she would look at me so mournfully as I walked by, and only twice did I sit there with her for a long time. Both times she put her paw on my arm. If I had known she was going to die, I would have sat with her more times. I regret not doing so. We were all sad when she died.

After she died, my parents got another dog. It had been neglected, and she was a big crab, no matter how much we tried to work with her. She got really old, and my parents had to put her down. I was glad.

Once I had a cat who had kittens, and the mom died when she got in a fight with a baby possum, so I bottle fed the kittens. They would follow me like I was a mother duck. They would also put their paws on the bottle when they were drinking. It was so cute. One of those kittens died in the dryer, by accident. I cried all day about that.

Maybe that's why cats are so sophisticated and so... erm, what's the word. Well statured. Whatever the Egyptians did and how they worshipped them probably had that effect on their generations. LOL!

Either way, I love both cats and dogs.
But I think all animals have personality and character. Horses, elephants, monkeys, hamsters, rats, birds, etc.

LOL, I have always felt that you can own a dog, but a cat owns you! Love them both too. We have always had at least one pet, usually several- 2 dogs and 3 cats at one point in time (plus a fish).

My cats say they are "personality plus" and they are well aware of who they are and who they own. My dog doesn't know but if you share your popcorn with her, she'll say whatever you want her to

By the way, I think my signature works for this thread...

Our animals definitely have their own personalities (and know how to work something to their advantage!) We currently have 2 dogs and 3 cats.

I read this somewhere and think it's cute

A DOG thinks "He feeds me, cleans up after me, pets me, and plays with me. He must be God."
A CAT thinks "He feeds me, cleans up after me, pets me, and plays with me. I must be God."

Too Funny

Cats have self respect and are able to set boundaries better than most people. My cat is very loving and certainly has a good memory. Anytime a new person comes to Bible study, she waits till later and the smells over the chair on which they sat to check them out. She has strong opinions about people. If I stay out too late, she is mad and ignores me a while. Of course she knows she is a cat! And she is THE cat of the house.

We used to have Siamese cats long ago. One would give my mother gifts of mice, layed on Mom's pillow. But once Mom was cross with her and so the cat threw up on the pillow.

A friend has siezures. Her dog taught herself to recognize when they are about to happen. She barks till my friend lays on the floor (so she won't be injured by falling).

I don't think animals need salvation to go to heaven because they didn't sin. People do.

No offense...I do not feel this question belongs here..I really the question you are asking may not be answered. Who cares if a cat knows whether he or she is a cat?

God probably does.

Why would God take the time and trouble to create the animal kingdom if He didn't care about them and give them unique and wonderful attributes. I think it is a wonderful question because we know that the personalities of the animals will be changed in the future, when Jesus sets up his kingdom.

The lion, the Bible tells us, will sit down with the lamb.

It saddens me when Christains fail for fully view God's creation with more interest. Exploring the question in the original OP gives us a chance to explore what God has done and, God's very nature, itself. Why anyone would be disinterested in this question is a puzzle to me.

This difference is used by Bob Sjogen of Unveilinglory in his wonderful book, "Cat and Dog Theology" to distinguish the primary differences in how Christians relate to God.

LOL.....

I also heard that God gave us dogs to remind us of how faithful God is to us and cats to show how unfaithful we are to Him.

Cats do do things on their own terms (don't follow the leader), but they can be just as loving. They just don't have an innate pack mentality or obedience trait, but are conditionally loving (if they like you). You can hit a subservient dog and the dog will not bite you or run away (he won't understand why you're doing it). It will accept being beaten (sad as that is), whereas a cat will fight back or flee.

But both are great pets and just have unique ANIMAL traits....But yeah, I do still wonder about their consciousness of themselves or their unique personality to where they are like humans (though without moral values...)....It seems like they have personalities like us, but not hte same intelligence and also not moral values (they have animal instincts they must follow?)....
